It had been many days since Sauda had seen a friendly face and even longer since he had been home. As an adult it was now his job to go out and scout the area, look for friendly packs, and most of all look for fertile hunting lands. Miremba, his mother, had insisted that he go as far as he could before turning back. The tribe was poor, it’s past members scattered to the winds, and they needed new blood and a better source of food. As the last remaining male of her pups, Sauda took the task with pride.

He had already spent the better part of the day chasing down breakfast, in other words a lone gazelle that had happened in his path, and was now exhausted. The sun was high overhead, marking the noon time, and against his wishes, he knew it was time to find a cool place to lie. And, as it just so happened, the perfect spot was nearby.

Laying, in the shade of a giant tree, the newly adult dog put his head on his paws and closed his eyes. The sounds of the savanna lulled him to sleep. Not even the bugs could disturb this peace he had found.

((Blarg...I gotta run home real fast...and if I don't pass out I'll be right back XD))

Amber eyes drifted across the savannah. Makali sighed in the heat of this dreadful day! He'd never felt one so hot! His fur was a mess from the humidity and his paws were a bit muddy from having played in a water hole a little bit ago, but this was still no solace for the cub. He pondered turning back and getting wet again, but decided it was too long of a walk. He decided, instead, to head for the nearest spot of cool he could find- a tree. The savannah seemed to stretch forever without a tree, but in the Pridelands, trees were oddly abundant. This he didn't know, but he was certainly grateful that they were there.

The cub saw something odd around the other side of the tree he was headed to, though. Makali saw only a nose. Confused, (and wanting to show off his find if it indeed was really only a nose) Makali quietly padded to see if anything was attached to it. He was almost disappointed when he saw a wild dog attached to the nose- part of him had wanted to brag about the odd thing that he'd found. It was asleep... what should he do? He plopped into a sitting position in the grass and pondered the possibilities. He could wake it up, that'd be risky. What if it were mean? He could sit here until it wakes up... that'd be boring. He could find another tree, that'd be boring too. He decided he'd wait for a few moments, and if nothing happened, he'd bop it on the nose. Now resolute, Makali sat and focused all of his attention on the dog's closed eye, seeing if it would wake up.

Something was staring at him. It was awfully distracting. Sauda shifted slightly, to move away from the uncomfortable stare, but it seemed to follow him. It burned right through him and disturbed his pleasant dreams. His ears wiggled in annoyance, trying to shut out the feeling from entering his most private thoughts. Thoughts of home and warm sunny days on the rocks. It didn't work.

Slowly, afraid to see what was staring at him so, he opened one eye. At first he saw nothing, his eye didn't immediately focus on what was in front of him, until he remembered that trees were brown, not gray. The realization startled him and he leapt up, assuming a very protected stance. A low growl emitted from deep within him until he realized what he was looking at was no real threat to him. A lion cub, cute, and gray, and very un-dangerous.

Without so much as a word, he sat, and stared back at the child. "Yes?"

Makali gave the dog a weird look for a moment, never had he seen a creature leap in surprise as this one had. He didn't flinch or turn to flee at the dog's growl, he knew that it was just out of shock. The cub had expected such as he was staring rather intently.

"I dunno, I'm bored." He said plainly, as if it was obvious that the wild dog was the only remedy for such boredom. He didn't really like the pink on the dog. While it was a boy, it was a... girly-colored boy. He kept that opinion to himself, still not fully aware as to whether the dog had a foul temper or not. "You bored too?" He asked, thinking that he must've been, who sleeps in the middle of the day unless they're bored out of their mind?!

Well...the cub was bold. Boldness was good but apparently his parents never taught him to not talk to strangers. Not that Sauda was the type of dog to steal away young lion cubs; no, Sauda preferred to keep lions at an arms length, but the cub was sort of...endearing? Maybe. His tenacity, however cute, kept the wild dog interested.

"No," the dog said, giving a yawn. "Old dogs just get tired in the heat."

The sun had, by now, sunken a little, though it's heat still permeated through the leaves. Birds were perched in the branches above them, chirping noisily, looking down on the pair as if they owned them. Oh, how he hated birds.

"So, you're bored, eh?" Sauda wasn't much for entertaining kids, it wasn't exactly his specialty. "What did you have in mind?"

"I dunno..." Makali said honestly, looking to the ground for a moment... The ground. Dirt. Monotonous and boring. He looked elsewhere, up at the birds for a moment then back at the dog. "How about..." he said, starting to honestly think of the non-boring possibilities. Eat the birds, chase a lizard...

"Ooo!" Makali said excitedly as he got the best idea ever. "How about we go look for bugs! That'd be fun." He pondered shoving them at that girly Kwasi girl- that was her name, right? - yes, that'd be simply hilarious! "I like that idea, look for bugs. Whaddya say?" He asked excitedly, on his feet in an instant.

Bugs. Of all the things in the savanna to chase, he had to choose bugs. The wild dog hadn't done that since he was a pup, and that seemed like forever a go. He wondered if he could even remember which bugs were good bugs and which ones were poisonous.

"Alright then, bugs it is." Sauda said, trying to give the impression that he'd rather do anything else. "Lead the way!"

Despite his play-acting at trying to have a lack of enthusiasm, the dogs tail still wagged excitedly, almost betraying him. Sauda didn't want to appear too involved least the cubs mother show up to take him away; the dog was not looking to get into a fight any time soon. He took a good look around before following beside the gray cub.

Silence. "So," he said hesitantly, "do you live in these lands? Where's your mother?"
PostPosted: Thu Dec 13, 2007 1:43 pm

"Yeah, I live here," Makali said blandly. Just like the lands- peaceful and quiet every day. He wanted some action! Adventures, excitement! All had been chased from the land by the adults, he assumed. Luckily, he and his new friends would be wandering around looking for fun soon.

He wondered for a moment why the stranger would care about his mother's whereabouts, but quickly shrugged it off. "She's meandering around the borders. She's a scout for the Pride, she makes sure no cubs get out and get lost. I think she keeps mean lions from getting in, too, but the Pridelands are pretty open. Rogues tend to be welcome, unless they're going to kill someone." He said as if everyone knew these facts.

"My name's Makali, by the way, I don't think I told you yet," he said, knowing it was only polite to introduce himself. An old fallen tree was up a bit ahead, he'd seen it a week or so before. Fallen trees were good places for bugs.

Ah, how he reminded Sauda of how he was when he was young. Now he was having adventures and exploring new lands but, now more than ever, all he wanted was to be home. As he looked at the young cub, he saw a lot of himself, or at least his young self, and it made him smile a doggie grin.

At least the wild dog had nothing to worry about while the mother was off doing her job. In fact he had probably gotten past her earlier but he couldn't recall. Either way, as they neared upon the fallen tree, he knew he was safe in the Pridelands at least for now.

"Nice to meet you Makali." He hesitated a minute before introducing himself, "I'm Sauda. Let's get diggin'."

Without further invitation, the silver cub leapt onto the fallen, rotting tree and started to dig with his feline-sharp claws. Grubs, beetles, and the like were sure to be inside of this old thing! It was dry on the outside, but once he broke through an outer layer, he found that it was quite moist inside, with plenty of holes. This would be promising, he was sure of it! He dug for a little while without paying any attention to the wild dog, his one track mind focused solely on grossing out a sibling, or maybe that "Kwasi" girl that Choku always had following him around. A sly grin spread across his face.

"What do you think about girls?" Makali asked with his nose crinkled at the idea of one... That was, until he spotted and extracted the largest grub he'd ever seen in his life, at which time a huge smirk spread across his face. He was obviously pondering the possibilities of it, but he still awaited Sauda's response.
