Neko's backstory before he came to live in Hitsu and Yuki's village. Which still happens to be unnamed. Maybe that will change.

The morning light filtered through the trees as it caressed the earth with the beginning of day warding off the night. The lark sang in the distance welcoming the dawn as it approached. As the morning drew on the light hit a tiny house hidden in the trees just outside the dark forest. It was a modest and rather bare looking hut but it was home none the less providing much needed shelter from the elements.
“Mother!” The voice of a young boy echoed out from the trees as he approached the hut, his hands full to the brim with scarlet blooms.
“Yes, Neko?” A tall lovely woman stepped out of the house to meet her son, concern written on her face, as she was afraid that there was something wrong. Her golden hair danced about her shoulders as she looked here and there before her eyes finally rested on the young boy. “Ah, there you are.”
Rushing up to his mother Neko held out the flowers he had picked before the dawn had arrived. “I found them in the forest. I picked them for you do you like them?”
Neko’s mother gave a soft chuckle as she knelt down toward her son. “Such the charmer.” A warm smile overtook her face as she took the flowers into her arms. “They’re lovely. Thank you.”
His mother’s smile and thanks were reward enough that Neko smiled with glee. Being only eight the smallest of things make one happy. Following his mother inside he watched as she prepared a vase and set the flowers in it and set that on the table. There were so many they overflowed the tiny container they were in, but that made them all the more vibrant bringing color and life into the otherwise dreary house.
“There now,” Rin smiled as she looked at the flowers. “That looks perfect.” Straightening a few things Rin was finally satisfied with out the table looked before going back to preparing their meal for the day. She had gone to work early on searching for vegetables, herbs, and roots that could be eaten. Her skill at hunting was basically none existent.
“Do you need help?” Neko asked as he pulled a chair up to the counter so he could see what she was doing. At a young age he was fairly content to help his mother where needed but she seemed content enough to let him play and enjoy himself.
“No, don’t worry about it, Dear,” She smiled at Neko running her fingers through his long midnight black locks. “Why don’t you go play. But stay close.”
Not wishing to argue Neko stepped back down off his chair replacing it at the table before he rushed out the door back into the forest. Watching him go with a sad smile on her face Rin couldn’t help but have mixed feelings about her son. She loved him dearly and wouldn’t give him up for the world, but at the same time he was the reason they had to be isolated. The village she had been apart of had been raided about nine years prier by a band of demons leaving the small town in ruin.
So many people had died that day and the few that survived would remember that day for long to come. Rin had been one of the few to make it but it came with a price. She had become pregnant beyond her own will and nine months later gave birth to a son, a son that couldn’t hid who he truly was from the world. His hair was pitch black, his eyes an icy blue, and his black tail was forked. He was a Nekomata. In a sense it was cruel of her but she named him for what he was calling him Neko for short. But all the same she loved him and when the villagers threatened to kill him she fled taking refuge on the outskirts of Yasha’s forest knowing they wouldn’t follow her there.
Eight years later and she was still there, trying her best to care for her little boy though she was constantly in worry of when the villagers would find them a finish what they had wanted to do all those years ago. Kill Neko for being a monster and kill her for giving birth to one. One would think that after eight years and there never being a hint of danger to their existence that it would make Rin’s nerves settle a little but it only seemed to make her all the more uneasy. In her mind they were waiting their time, planning for their attack.

Neko found his amusement in a creek nearby, splashing in the water trying to catch tadpoles near the surface. After a few moments of failed attempts, Neko sat a little ways off the bank and crouched down low like he was hunting. Edging closer to the water he eyed the movement of the little creatures as they whirled about in the water. Seconds fleeted by as he continued to watch, biding his time and then without warning he swiped at the water sending at least half a dozen of the little creatures onshore.
A victorious expression crossed his face as he scooped up the tadpoles one by one and placed them back in the creek. Once they were back in the water Neko went about repeating his actions until something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. Turning toward it he could clearly see what it was. A little further down the creek was a small school of fish. Decent sized fish from the look of it. Making his way toward them Neko rock hopped until he was in the middle of the creek only a couple of feet away from the school. The fish barely seemed to notice his presence, as they were clearly intent on swimming upstream.
A low growl emitted from the pit of his stomach, the very thought of fish made his mouth water and Neko was sure his mother would love to have some as well. So positioning himself on his rock Neko prepared himself. He crouched down low, keeping a good foothold on the rock he was currently seated on, hand poised above the water. For a moment it seemed as if the world stood still and this was when Neko choose to strike out. As luck would have it, he managed to snag a fish on his first try, the downside was he lost his footing and fell into the creek, the fish firmly grasped in his claws.
A few splashing struggles later and Neko made his way to shore, a smile spread from ear to ear as he still had a firm hold of his prize.
“Hey!”
The deep male voice caught Neko off guard and he nearly dropped his fish as a result. Clutching it tightly with both hands he turned toward the source and was faced with two large male cat tribe members. One was rather plump around the middle, obviously a lover of food, while the other was rather thin and scruffy.
“I hope you intend to give that fish to me. This creek is off limits to the likes of you.” The portly cat man said.
“Looks like we have a little demon spawn on our hands.” The thin, lanky cat guy retrieved a knife from his belt. “His tail would catch a mighty fine price.”
Frozen in place, Neko could only stare on helplessly as the two men talked amongst themselves.
“I don’t think a scrawny little brat like him would be worth anything.”
“You would think that, but you can get a hefty price for a split tail like that.”
Both males started to advance and for a moment all Neko could do was look on in horror. Once the two were almost upon him Neko’s senses kicked in and he took off in a run through the forest. He was fast for a child his size and was easily able to outrun the chubby cat guy but the other one stayed close on his heels and was quickly catching up. Taking a detour, Neko made his way back toward the creek. The section he was aiming for was much wider and deeper than the spot he had previously been at so hopefully he could loose them in the water.
It didn’t take long for him to get there but he barely stayed ahead of his pursuer. Once at the bank Neko took a leap and nimbly landed on a rock nearly in middle of the creek bed and continued to the other side. The creek here was nearly fifteen feet across and a stretch for him to make but he knew an adult with longer legs would have less trouble. His hopes were riding on their agility in the matter and as luck would have it as the man made his first leap from the shore he landed on the small rock in the middle of the creek and fell into the water. With a grin Neko used this opportunity to escape and took a much longer route to go home, just to be sure he wasn’t followed.
It took him late into the evening before he finally returned home and he returned to find his mother standing by the door looking out worriedly waiting for his return. His expression of excitement fell as he approached when she gave him a scornful look.
“Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick.” She knelt down to him and looked him over. “And you’re all muddy.” She started to dust him off.
“I’m sorry,” Neko held up the fish he had been carrying since he had caught it. “I was trying to catch a fish for you.” He didn’t want to worry her about the details of what had really kept him away.
“Oh, you silly boy.” Taking the fish, Neko’s mother wrapped her arms around him in a hug. “You had me so worried, never do that to me again.”
“I…I’m sorry.” He seemed to say that a lot, but it never seemed to be enough.
Drawing back, Neko’s mother wiped a few stray tears from her eye as a smile returned to her face. “Well, since you worked so hard to catch it, let me fix you your fish.”
Smiling as well, Neko nodded his head vigorously and followed his mother toward their fireplace to help her prepare the fish to cook.

As the year went on Neko was glad that he never again met the two males that had chased him before. He had been leery at first to return to the creek but at the same time it seemed to be an excellent source of food. Over the months he had perfected his fishing ability moving up from catching them with his bare hands to fishing with a makeshift fishing rod. When he got fishing down to second nature Neko decided to broaden his horizons and give a try at hunting small game.
It was a challenge for sure, his first few tries all ended in failure and a bruised ego. He was sure that the squirrels he had been trying to catch were laughing at him as they climbed to the safety of their nest in a pine tree. Determination, however, won over his hurt ego as he continued to try and finally landed himself a small rabbit. It wasn’t much but he had managed to snare it in a trap he had set up.
Proud of his accomplishment he returned that evening with a big grin on his face as he presented his mother with the rabbit he had caught.
“You’ve been working so hard lately,” Neko’s mother poured him a bowl of rabbit stew before she sat down to her own bowl at the table. “I’m so proud of you.”
“We’ll never have to worry about food again, I’ll be sure of that.” Taking up his spoon Neko scooped the first bite of the stew into his mouth. It was delicious, he had never had rabbit before but he was most certainly going to have it again.
“You are becoming quite the hunter,” Neko’s mother sipped at her own stew through her smile. “Just promise me you’ll be careful. Hunting is very dangerous.”
Pausing from his stew Neko looked up at his mother, though she was smiling worry was evident in her eyes. “Don’t worry, I will be.” Unknowing to him, she was worried not only about the dangerous animals in the forest but the men that might also be lurking there.
“Why don’t you stay home tomorrow. I want to show you how to do a few things.”
“Like what?” Neko took another big bite of his stew but noticed his mother was barely eating at all.
“Just small things that might help you in the future. Like sowing and making simple medicines. Can you do that for me?”
Neko nodded despite himself. Neither sowing nor making medicines sounded like much fun, but he couldn’t tell his mother no. Maybe she was lonely with him being gone all day?
“Great, we’ll start tomorrow. Maybe you can stay home for a couple of days at a time so I can show you. Take a well deserved break from your hunting.” She smiled at him, her teal eyes looking a little brighter since he agreed. She must be lonely, Neko thought, guilt pooling in the pit of his stomach. Otherwise, why would she be so intent on keeping me home more? Only wanting to make his mother happy he would stay home for as many days as she wanted before he would leave to hunt. She wanted him to be home so he would be home.

Just as she had promised, Neko’s mother taught him everything she knew from cooking techniques, to making medicines, to tending to wounds, and sowing. She wanted her son’s skills to be well rounded, incase she would no longer be there to help him along.
“Like this?” Neko held up a pair of his own pants he was trying to patch up. The patch itself was securely on with no threat of falling off, but his stitch work was all over the place.
Rin giggled, “Not quite, but its still a good try. You won’t have to worry about the patch falling off.”
Neko frowned looking his work over. Hunting was much easier than this he just couldn’t get the hang of sowing. Medicine he had caught on to right away. It was all about picking the right plant for the right problem. It all relied on his ability to remember what he was looking for and finding it by touch, taste, and smell which wasn’t very hard. Sowing on the other hand relied on a skill that he did not possess.
About to ask a question, Neko was halted as his mother began to cough. She had been doing that a lot lately, and it was progressively getting worse and worse. Setting his sowing aside, Neko went to fetch a glass of water and stood beside her as her coughing fit finally subsided. Thankful, she took the glass and drank to cool her sore throat.
“Are you alright?” Neko asked as he sat back in his chair beside her.
“Yes, yes, don’t worry. I think I just have a cold.” She waved him off with a smile and went back to her own sowing.
But despite her reassurance that it was a cold, her symptoms worsened after a couple of days, to the point that she was finally bed ridden.
“Here, drink this,” Neko handed her a hot mug of herbal tea. She had shown him how to make it and though its effects didn’t last long, for a little while she would seem to be better.
“Thank you,” She took the mug and gave it a sip. Instead of being bitter like it usually was it had the sweet taste of honey. She smiled into her cup as she realized the effort he was putting into taking care of her. “You’re too good to me.” She smiled. “Why don’t you run off and play? The fall is almost half way over and the leaves have started to fall. Why not collect some?”
“I don’t have time,” Neko stated standing to his feet. “I need to get more herbs for your tea and catch something to make dinner with tonight.” Leaning forward he placed a kiss on his mother’s forehead, a sign that he was about to leave, but she wouldn’t allow it. She reached out and grabbed hold of his arm and held him in place.
“Please, go and enjoy yourself for the both of us. It is your birthday after all.” Neko paused, he had forgotten. His birthday had been the furthest thing from his mind. “Here, I have something for you.” Letting go of his arm she knelt under her bed and produced a small box. “It’s not much but I hope you like it.”
Upon opening the case, Neko stared down at three finely sharpened blades. They were made of steel with a loop handle to aid in throwing them. Running his fingers over them he looked back up at his mother with a smile.
“They were my father’s, I know he would have wanted you to have them. Now maybe you can return my kitchen knives.” Letting out a laugh, Neko complied by placing her kitchen knives that he had been using for hunting on the table and replacing them with the new blades he had just received.
“Thank you, mother.” He ran back to her side and pressed another kiss to her forehead before he ran to the door. “I’ll be back a little later. Keep drinking your tea while I’m gone.” And with that he was gone.
Rin smiled as she looked into her tea. “My sweet little boy, nine going on twenty.”

Neko had not told his mother one of the true reasons he was leaving. Secretly he had been gathering small game and taking them to the nearby village to sell for money. He was saving up to buy better medicine than he could make and possibly get his mother something nice. It was a slow process and the elder medicine woman in the village was strike with her high prices but still Neko saved what he could taking home game that he didn’t sell.
Through his time in the woods Neko had discovered an odd power he did not know that he possessed. The ability to cloak his own appearance. It didn’t seem like much but he was able to make his tail vanish from sight, shorten his ears, and make his eyes more feline than demon. It was enough that he never ran into trouble at the village. No one ever seemed to be the wiser about what he truly was, but it did take quite a bit of concentration to keep it up and it was for that reason he kept his visits to the village short.
Heading home after another day of selling rabbits in the market Neko was halted in his tracks as he came within sight of his house. Just outside the door were the two men he had seen before at the creek. They seemed to be questioning his mother who stood leaning against the door an angry expression on her face.
Fed up that they weren’t getting any answers they took off in Neko’s direction forcing Neko to hid until they were gone. Once they were far enough out of sight he made his way to his house and found his mother sitting at the table, her head resting in her palms.
“Mother?” Neko questioned as he stepped through the door.
As Rin looked up Neko could see her eyes were full of tears that stained her pale cheeks. “Thank goodness you’re back. I was worried.” She didn’t say anything further but beckoned Neko to her side.
“Why were you worried?” Neko asked as he took a seat beside her.
“I just wasn’t sure where you were,” She replied. Apparently she was trying to spare Neko the details of the visitors she had had only moments ago.
“There’s no need to worry, Mother.” Placing a hand on her arm to try and reassure her Neko stood to his feet. “You should probably get back in bed. You’re not well enough to be up and about yet.”
“But I need to make dinner and there is cleaning to be done and your pants still need mended.” She tried to refuse but it was obvious her body was weak as she leaned against the table for support. She began to cough again, more violently than she had before which left Neko to worry as he stood over her. Once her coughing fit was over he could see bits of crimson on her hands but she quickly hid them under the table. “Maybe I will lay down.” She finally said.
Not questioning her further Neko knew now that he was pressed for time to get the medicine he knew his mother needed. If only he knew how to make it himself but his knowledge didn’t expand that far. “Yes, lay down and I’ll make you some more tea.” He instructed helping her over to the bed not far away. Once she was seated and comfortable Neko went about preparing more herbal tea hoping that tomorrow he would be able to get the medicine she needed.

“WHAT?!” Neko stood outside the old crone’s medicine shop staring in disbelief at the sign she had left. “Going on a trip will be back in a few weeks.”
“A few weeks?” Neko was furious, he finally had enough money to get his mother the medicine she needed and now the old bat was away. Dreadful old crone. With a sneer Neko pocketed the gold he had collected and made his way home. There wasn’t much he could do at this point, just continue to care for his mother while he waited for the old woman to return. But he really was beginning to worry, his mother’s condition was getting worse. She had a constant fever now and with cold weather setting in it was harder for her to stay warm.
It fact that day it had choose to snow the white flakes making a thin layer over top of the ground. Trudging through it without much difficulty Neko made his way home back toward the dark forest. The snow had continued to drift along the wind picking up the longer he walked. It was like the weather was against him for some reason trying to slow down his process of getting home.
Once the tiny hut was in sight Neko made a run for it happy to be out of the raging weather that was coming down harder than before. Dusting the snow off his shoulders Neko walked over to the small fire he had lit before he left to warm his hands and feet. From the looks of it his mother was still asleep so he would allow her to rest a little while longer.
Warmed up and dry Neko went to work preparing the tea he fixed for his mother every day hoping he wouldn’t run out of dried herbs before the winter was out. He hadn’t had too much time to collect them before the season had turned cold and the plants started dying off so he was left with very little. The tea prepared Neko poured a good amount into a cup and made his way over to his mother, setting the drink on the stand by her bed. Sitting down beside her Neko gently shook her shoulder.
“Mother?” Her shoulder was cold and her face remained expressionless, as her body gave no reaction to his touch or words. Hoping that she was only in a deep sleep Neko tried again speaking a little louder this time but it still seemed to do little good. It was then that he noticed the thin trail of blood leaking from the corner of her mouth and drawing back the covers he saw that it had made a descent pool behind her head. “Mother?!” His voice was more desperate now as he shook her trying to get her to wake up but there was no life left in her weak body.
Tears began to well up in Neko’s eyes as he did what he could hoping to bring her back. He tried to give her some tea but it only ran out of her mouth and onto the pillow. Trying to keep her warm he covered her back up taking the blankets from his own bed and placing them over her but she had been gone for some time now while Neko was away. With any luck she had passed in her sleep but that thought couldn’t even come close to comforting Neko as he rested his head in the crook of his mother’s shoulder crying into her now dull golden hair. She was gone and there was nothing he could do. He wasn’t able to save her despite his effort.

The years had passed by like the blink of an eye leaving Neko to wander the dark forest on his own. From time to time he would still travel up to his old home and visit the grave where he had buried his mother. It was beautiful and scenic, he knew she would like it here. Under a large willow tree that’s branches swooped down into the water of the pond that lay next to it. Marking where she lay was a small stone with her name carved into it and fresh flowers that he had picked from the nearby valley.
He spent a good hour there staring at the head stone or looking out over the pond. He still wondered to this day if he would have been able to help her, been able to save her, but those questions would never be answered now. After the hour was up Neko made his way back into the forest way from the hut he used to call home. He hated staying there, it only reminded him of how he had failed. Instead he choose to camp out amongst the trees living out day to day.
He was nearly sixteen now and seven years had passed since his mother had been taken from him leaving him as more of a cold individual. He hated the world for what it thought of him and hated himself for what he thought of the world. It was a hard state of mind to live in and he often found himself questioning if he should really go on, but seven years later and he was still here so that had to count for something.

On a day like any other Neko found himself wandering through the dark forest. He had gone out hunting early in the day and now wore three rabbits strapped to his belt. He didn’t quite feel safe where he was, a small band of imps had been following him for some time, no doubt after the meal he had just caught but he preferred to not have to deal with them. So instead he took to the trees making a wide path through the forest until he settled on a small clearing.
There he took a short rest listening intently for any sound of his pursuers. Long pointed ears twitched up and down while his black forked tail swayed behind him anxiously. Nothing reached his ears beyond the gentle call of the birds over head and the wind trailing through the trees. Maybe he had finally lost them at last? Still not completely satisfied Neko kept moving, hoping that now he could find a nice place to settle down and eat before moving on.

The sun was high in the sky, but despite this the forest was not sunny and bright. The trees grew too close together to allow the sunlight to shine through easily, and the most one was likely to find this far into spring was the occasional ray of sunlight that had found its way through somehow, basking small areas of the ground like a spotlight. It was these particular spots that the young feline halfling had been searching for, as they were one of the few places that harbored flowering plant life. She'd also set out early, with a basket in tow that looked a bit too large for a child of her size to be lugging along. She'd started seeking out flowers around the border of her tribe's territory, but eventually had begun to stray farther from home. At first, she didn't seem to pay any mind, following a trail that the hunters typically set out on. That too she had soon abandoned, after she'd seen some plants of interest several feet off the trail.
And so this had continued, for what had to have been hours, before her basket was no less than half full. Where she had found so many flowers, even her appointed caretakers would likely wonder. Caretakers that apparently weren't doing their jobs very well, as she was never supposed to stray too far. Clearly, far might have been an understatement. When she finally decided she had enough flowers, due to the desire to go home more than anything, she soon discovered that she was completely lost.
At first, she'd looked for the trail, but all she managed to find were trails of feral animals that either took her in circles or generally led her to believe she wasn't going the right way. Of course, in her panic she only followed them for a few minutes before running off in a different direction. This continued for nearly a full hour, before she finally dropped her basket of flowers next to her and collapsed onto her rump on the ground. She was tired, hungry and scared. She didn't know how far she was from home, or how she'd get back. At the thought of being lost forever, let alone being in the forest when it really did get dark, she started to cry.

As he continued through the thick forest a sound that he had not been expecting reached Neko’s ears. It was soft at first but it soon came in clearer, the sound of crying. Curious, Neko moved in closer to investigate though he was cautious in doing so. One could never be too careful in a forest that harbored demons, it could easily be a well laid trap.
His searching continued for a few moments until he stumbled upon the source of the sound. Keeping his distance he watched the little girl who sat on the ground, tears leaking freely from her eyes. She no doubt was lost, there wasn’t a village anywhere too close to here though he had a fairly good idea of where she had come from.
Unsure what to do, Neko stayed close to a tree for cover, trying to determine if he should help or not. He wasn’t very fond of children, but it would be a shame to just leave her here. No doubt some undesirable or another would pick her up.

After several minutes of crying, Hitsu thought she heard something. Then, she knew she smelled someone else nearby. Her crying slowed, for the time being, and she looked around for whoever was close. Basket was left to sit askew on the ground, flowers temporarily forgotten.
"Hello?" She called quietly at first, afraid to shout too loud for fear that this person or creature might not be friendly. When she got no immediate response, she called out louder. "Is someone there?"

Neko had stood silently where he was only taking a moment to shift his weight to a more comfortable standing position. Apparently that is where he had gone all wrong because he had stepped on a branch in the process making the small twigs snap under his weight. The noise had apparently alerted the child because now she was up and about looking around for the source of the noise. With a sigh, Neko moved out from behind his tree forgetting at the moment that he was still in his true form.
Forked black tail swayed behind him as he stepped out around the tree he had been hiding behind. The wilderness had not been entirely kind to him, his clothes were a mess baring tears and fringed edges. His shirt looked like it was barely wearable anymore. His face and hands were dirty from the blood of his recent kills and his hair was a mess hiding most of his face. “It’s not safe out here for little kids.” Neko spat in a feral manner his gleaming icy blue gaze settling on the child’s tear stained face.

It had only been a moment of searching, before the young man had revealed himself. She gave a startled gasp, eyes growing wide in fright. Not so much in response to the demonic physical features, as she'd never seen a demon before to begin with, but the generally wild look of him. The hair, the tattered clothing and... The blood. She took a several hasty steps backward, and whimpered softly. She felt the urge to run, and she probably would if he made any sudden movements. However, she remained, though her fear was apparent in her shaking.
"I-I'm lost..." She explained, as soon as he'd snapped at her. "I ca-can't find m-my v-village." Eyes had brimmed with tears again. "I ju-just want to go home!" She rubbed at her eyes with the backs of her hands quickly, trying to keep her vision clear encase she did need to flee.

Neko gave another visible sigh. Apparently he had been right in assuming she was lost. Taking another step closer Neko judge the little girl for a moment her shaking form giving away the fear that she had. It was then that Neko took notice of the forked tail he still sported and gave a hiss of frustration before making the tail and his long ears disappear from sight. He was certain this was why the child was frightened. Many parents warned their children that demons would spirit them away in the night never to return.
“Its far too dangerous out here,” Neko tried to make his voice sound a little softer though it still came out rather gruff. “I’ll try to help you find your village.” As much as Neko didn’t like children, the thought of leaving this little girl to possibly die in the forest would weigh on his mind far too much. Advancing further Neko through caution to the wind and reach out to take hold of the child's arm.
