The day's events had been exhausting for Kara, though it distressed her that she'd be this easily tired after doing such simple things. She'd have thought her stamina would be better after living the life of a castaway for few weeks maybe a month now. The evening at the campfire was still filled with her chatter, apparently her mouth had a different source of energy. And while her eyes drooped, she still kept making conversation.

With a yawn, she declared she was heading off to bed and bade everyone goodnight. As she lay down, she notice that odd feeling of being horribly bloated was returning again. She pushed it to the back of her mind and went to sleep.

It was a few good hours when it started.

Kara found herself being wrenched forcibly from the tender clutches of sleep as she sat up. She felt like she was going to burst and clamped her hands over her mouth to muffle the frightened whimper. She rose from her bunk and rushed towards the edge of camp, trying to get away from everyone. She had felt this before when she had first changed and she didn't want to bother anyone with her hysteria. She knew nothing good was going to come out of this and she just had to be alone.

Pakshetpakshetpakshetpakshetpakshet Hands still firmly over her mouth she sped away as quietly as she could. Though she might not have been as silent as she hoped.

Kai, despite Aiden's kind offer to let her stay at the Airbase, had found herself back at the strange camp. Though she continued to stay at the sandy edges, choosing to sleep in the scruffy grass nearest the forest but still close to the beach. She knew there were others and they came and went, but she generally stayed away, especially after Jack's little outburst of this being some sort of sickness.

Though Wesley had said it wasn't...

Kai lay away, curled up as tightly as she could with her backpack beneath her head. She'd slept most of the day, lounging and relaxing in the shade of the trees. The meal that Aiden had given her had only been enough to stop her stomach from clenching for a while.

As she lay she could only really think about how hungry she was... that and wondering how she'd get back home. How far was this island from the island chain of Hawaii? If she'd survived the sea long enough to be washed ashore here... but then again, who knew how fast or slowly the currents and waves had carried her.

Kainalu sighed, sitting up and running her hands through her snarly hair, groaning slightly. It was caked with sea salt and sand. She'd have to find a fresh water stream sometime and rinse it out. It was during these thoughts that she saw the shadow stand up in the camp and sneak away. The Hawaiian frowned, pausing only a moment before standing up and following it toward wherever it was headed. She'd stay quiet until she could get closer and figure out who it was, if she knew them.

Kara didn't know she was being followed or how far away from the camp she ran. When she could bear the sensations in her body no longer, she fell to her knees onto sandy ground. A strangled cry forced its way past her lips as her body swelled and swelled until her skin was stretched taut over the added mass. She felt the remnants of her shirt dig into her skin before the audible sound of ripping cloth pierced the night.

"Aaaaaaugh!!!" She moaned, arms clutching the torn garment to her body.

She'd continued walking at a brisk pace as the figure fell to it's knees on the ground, by now Kainalu had gathered that something was wrong. When she heard the faintly familiar voice groan aloud she stopped, caught half way between horror and the urge to see if she could help in anyway.

It looked like...

...like she was growing. No, growing wasn't really the right word for it. It was more like... puffing up. Like someone was inflating the person's body.

Kainalu tore herself away, launching into a sprint and making up the rest of the distance, stopping with a small spray of sand beside whom she now recognized as Kara. "What's wrong? What's going on?!" She stood over the figure of the other woman, eyes wide.

Kara would have bolted away if she could, but her extremeties began to tingle and itch, making it near difficult to focus on anything else. "S-stay away! D-don't look!" She turned away from Kai, a hand raised as if trying to hide the rest of her features from the new castaway. Kara gasped as she felt her skin's texture change and the roughness and discoloration surged upwards her hands to her arms, from her feet to her thighs and to her back. She had purposely left because she didn't want to change in front of anyone. Her first transformation hadn't gone well and she didn't want to risk another embarassing episode.

Kai gave a sound of alarm as she saw Kara's skin... it almost seemed to ripple as it changed, turning gray and rough. Kainalu took a half step back, raising her own hands as though to defend herself. She gave a short barking sound of startlement.

"Oh god!" What was happening?! Despite Kara's plea for Kai to not look she couldn't help but stare, her mouth hanging open in astonishment.

Kara felt the tears sting her eyes as she heard Kai's reaction. It wasn't an unexpected one, but it still mortified Kara immensely. When her scalp started to itch, her hands rose to her head, covering the roots of her hair as the strands lengthened to reveal the real dark brown shade of her orange-dyed hair. She didn't seem to care or notice the few strands that were colored green because all that ran through her mind was the fervent wish that the ground would open up and swallow her. She wished that she was changing in front of someone who had already undergone a change. She didn't think Kai would be able to understand what she was feeling or going through.

What was worse, something in her told her that it wasn't over.

On her knees, Kara curled tightly into a ball, whimpering pathetically to no one in particular. "No more, please, no more..."

Kai stood watching as Kara writhed, her hair lengthening and changing color. It was too dark to see the streaks of green that had sprouted, all that Kai could tell was that it had stopped... or at least she thought it had.

She stiffly moved forward, dropping down to her knees beside the other woman. Her chat with Aiden a few days ago... Kainalu had come to accept the people who lived on this island as truely human. Kara was no acception, no matter how horrifying it was to see the other woman... mutate so rapidly before her very eyes.

Was this the sickness that Jack had so fervently said was going around here?

"What's happening?" Her voice cracked as she spoke, even as she reached out hesitantly. She'd touched Aiden's tail, and the other woman seemed so distraught. Kainalu gingerly let her fingertips rest against Kara's back, immediatly pulling them away in discomfort at the strange feel of her skin. It was rough, and dry. She felt confused and alarmed, she wanted to help but she didn't know -what- was happening!

The tingling in her limbs distracted her from the sound of Kai's voice and the feel of her touch on her back. She had felt her hands, but her mind was too focused on the pain in her hands and feet. What few fingers and toes she had fused together into useless digits whose tips barely moved with the most intense of efforts.

"Ch-changing. Ag-again." She grunted as the bones of her fingers and toes melded into their new form. "PUNYETA!!!" she cursed as she tried to clench what had been her hands into fists but only succeeded in folding her thumb and the very tips of her new fingers.

Surely it was over now?

Changing again?

So this was the big changes that everyone talked about? Growing tails and fins?! Kainalu overcame her aversion to touching the strange new flesh as Kara spoke through what seemed like great pain. Those two words struck Kainalu as very strong. She was able to speak despite what was happening.

Gingerly she reached out to place her hand on the other woman's shoulder, brushing her longer hair out of the way. Kai half leaned forward on her haunches, craining her head so she could try and look into Kara's face. "I'm here..." It was all she could think to say... aside from... "I'm not scared."

A bold faced lie, she was terrified deep down in her very core but she shoved that aside. Absently she gently began tucking the torn fragments of Kara's shirt together, making sure that the makeshift clothing piece would stay on her. She was greatful for the night, she couldn't completely see all the details of that gray, rough skin as her fingertips brushed over it in her work.

Human, she was human.

Kara panted for air, her arms and legs still hurt, and this time it was due to her bones shrinking in length. She felt them press against themselves and she stiffened not because she wanted to but because it was all she could do as the bones retracted several inches.

"G-getting bigger th-then get-ting sh-shorter?! Make. Up. Your. Damn. Mind!" She yelled through grit teeth, more to her body than to Kai, "S-so-rry." she cringed, dark brown eyes looking to Kai in apology. "C-can't think. I hurt." She explained in a strained voice. She had never felt such pain before in her life.

Kai nodded, half hunched in the sand. She felt frozen as Kara's mass continued to shift and continue to change.

Was she crazy for sitting here? Watching Kara Dy, a woman she'd only just met a few days prior go through gruesome, bone crunching changes that made her cry out in pain?

Was she stupid?

Was she brave?

She just felt... stuck. Drawn. Compelled. She couldn't explain it. What was it in her that made her sit here? She was dead positive that any other person who had stumbled upon something like this happening would run away in terror.

"It's okay... don't talk. Hey, your hair." She'd caught notice of the darker brown coming in. A change, perhaps? Or maybe just the roots of dyed hair?

Kara wasn't in the mood to smile, though she appreciated Kai's attempts at distracting her from the horror that was her transformation. The pain was slowly subsiding though her arms and legs still felt tender. "W-what about my hair?" she asked, throat raspy from her struggles of keeping silent. She felt the cool night breeze tickle her skin but strangly she didn't shiver. The added mass was serving as insulation from the cold.

"It's darker at the top." She shifted so that she was sitting on her legs, her barefeet tucked beneath her butt as she swept Kara's hair around to her shoulder lightly so that she could see it's new length and color. Kai noticed a strip of even darker color amongst the hair, but couldn't decide what color it was in the pale moonlight. "And it's longer."

She let go of Kara's hair, sitting back slightly as she looked at the other woman in wonder. So it hurt...? It definatly seemed to, Kara had been doing all she could not to cry out in pain. Kainalu let her eyes slide down to the other woman's arms and then hands, the skin at the back of her neck prickling slightly in alarm and unease. Kara no longer had five fingers, rather... one very large, triangular shaped mass of flesh and a thumb.

"Is it over...?"

Oddly enough the first thing Kara could say upon seeing the added length of her hair was "Getting my hair dyed at this length is gonna be hella expensive." before bursting out into laughter. And then she began to wail. "I'm being punished for my stupidity!" She buried her face into her hands before recoiling at the rough texture. Her expression was nothing short of anguished and disgust.

She had told Kate she was fine with the changes, she had repeated it over and over and over, hoping that she'd eventually come to believe it. But she hadn't even completely accepted her first changes before all this happened. "I don't think it'll ever be over!" she sobbed, her cheeks burning in shame as she wished she could control her emotions better.
