I read it a loooong time ago. All I really remember is that spice was the equivalent of an acid trip. Oh, yeah, and the litany against fear. That was kinda cool.

It was ok but it never made it onto my favorites list. The story line was so complex..... THen again it was a decent book and a decent series.

Yes! I love this book a lot. It was actually what made me get interesting in Adult Science Fiction. After I read it, my old Teen Fantasy books seemed childish and stupid, which they were(now that I look back on it).
Yeah, the story is complex, but that just makes it better. I mean, it wasn't mind-blowingly complex, and I could understand it perfectly, but something thats too easy to understand and makes you able to predict anything is no fun, right?
Anyway, overall, I really loved this book. It was quite interesting.

Did anyone read any of the many sequels? Either by Frank or Brain Herbert?

I have read all the sequels and I found them to be disappointing. To me at least. Why didn't he stop after the first book? Dune was perfectly fine on its own without follow-ups.

Maybe it was an early manifestation of the "cash cow" syndrome, where someone saw a hot seller, and tried to repeat it--in this case, over and over and over.

I haven't read it yet although my sister has 4 times. I have seen all of the movies and I want very much to read the book (oh yes, am I the only one who thinks the sci-fi forum is much too small?)

I read the first book several times, and the second, I have some of the others but I never read them. What actually got me into it originally was the computer game, Dune 2 (and later Dune 2000). I also now own the movie (the one with Sting and Kyle whateverhislastnameis). You just gotta love it. wink
