Hello, everyone!

I didn't see any other topic about this specific subject, so I thought I would ask the guild at large:
What makes a great bookstore to you?
What is it that makes a particular store your favorite above all others?

I ask because I work in a used bookstore myself, and our business is in a decline.
n_n;;
I'm just curious as to what we might be able to do to save this store. We're the only used book store in town.
o_o;;
All input is appreciated!

For new bookstores, I typically go by whatever's close, though in the case of Borders over Barnes and Noble which are across the street from eachother in my town, it really depends who's working on the the given day.

As for used bookstores, selection. There's one that I go to because I can find some more unusual books.

When I go to a bookstore, I hit Borders, mostly because it's only 2 miles down the road from my house. When I was in grad school, I loved trolling through used bookstores for interesting titles. However, since I've graduated and moved, I don't know any used bookstore in my area.

I guess I like a bookstore that offers lots of choice and diversity...that has many areas for different topics..and that isn't expensive! And that when you ask to order a book, they will order it for you quickly without any hassle.
I don't go to used book stores very often because they never have the books I want sweatdrop people get rid of their old books..I don't like many "old" authors.

I usually go to Borders when I purchase new books, but it's an hour's drive so I can't do that as often as I'd like. Typically I've ordered from the Barnes & Noble website over the past year when I didn't have a trip to the city planned. Convienant and easy with free shipping for orders $25 or more. I'm a sucker for the bargains and the free shipping.

There's a new and used bookshop that I like to go to. I get store credit on used books when I bring my own in to exchange. It has diversity. I've discovered a lot of interesting gems within its walls. Every time I come back with books I call them orphans that I'm bringing home.

I'd suggest maybe having a contest or something. Maybe allow everyone who makes a purchase between dates A and B enter to win money or a gift certificate? You could have it so that every $5 spent at your store would be worth an entry.

I tend to like bookstore with diversity so that you can find lots of things in them. I also like ones that are easy to find things in and have friendly people so if you're having problems finding something it's not so scary to ask. (I hate asking people for books in bookstores. I'll wander around for an hour before asking someone.)

I usually like to buy new books though. So for used book stores I tend to like ones that give cash instead of store credits. sweatdrop But atleast I go buy more books with that cash to go give back to the store! It's a cycle and the used book store that I go to likes me because I give them nice, shiny, almost new, books instead of old tattered ones that are about to fall apart. whee

I loved book stores that have books that aren't just new. I don't mean just used, but not recently published or endorsed by someone famous. I like selection and a sales clerk that knows that sometimes a person just needs to browse and "feel the book calling for them".

Appreciate a good used book store. (And I can't help but search for books I love on a thrift store rack.) I think its the fact that you never know what you'll find, or if you will discover a new favorite! I also just love used books. Books that have had been loved alreayd and I don't worry if it is me who is going to accidentally crease the spine.

I also love stores where you can sit down and read the book you bought. Couches, benches, wood chairs, tables something where you can sit down and enjoy the book away from home.

my town have several used bookstores and since I'm mostly into fantasy and sci fi, it makes it more fun to collect the books for different series. I guess that's what does it for me...a big selection of used books and not 5 copies of the same book. I do order lots of books off Amazon, I might do that with Barnes and Noble site, not sure.

Aww, that makes me sad that your business is in decline, I love used book stores! I read so fast that to pay full price for books, even paperback, is a bank account gouger.
Otherwise I like online bookstores, like amazon, because I can pretty much order anything. Stand alone stores' selections are usually limited to super new releases and your standard bestseller selections.
