A style of rock music that incorporates elements of punk rock and heavy metal, popularized in the early 1990s and often marked by lyrics exhibiting nihilism, dissatisfaction, or apathy.
Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle Sound) is a subgenre of alternative rock that was created in the mid-1980s by bands from the American state of Washington, particularly in the Seattle area.

However, when said artists were growing up, heavy metal was popular. grunge is born of the two

Though Czarinas it totally right, it seems like so many bands have listened to and been influenced by the Beatles. I easily see the relation between punk and grunge. They've both got that "Throw off convention" attitude. Grunge just doesn't seem as angry and anarchistic to me.

Not so much anarchistic as 'just screw it'. >< I dunno. Many people get different messages. I'm sure there isn't a real way of defining any music or human expression.

A piece of art can mean so many different things to so many different people... but then again, it's fun to quarrell over meaning anyways. :]

Mmm grundge was anti 80's music, especially metal like motely crue, they were more 70's metal. And grunge wouldn't be called grunge now-a-days it'd just be alternative. You guys ever hear the bleach album? That one sounded very punk rock to me, it was fast and what not.
You ever notice how like grunge fans either go towards punk more or metal more? weird...blah.
