So yeah, I'm planning on getting a new guitar in a few months. There's only so long I can tolerate my Squier.
Does anybody have a suggestion for a good guitar for under or around $750?
Protip: the music store I go to deals in Fender, Schecter, Dean, and Jackson, so it would be preferred if it were one of these brands.

Also, sooner than that, I want a new amp to replace the Fender 15G that came with my guitar. A 1x10 or 12 combo with good metal-type distortion is what I'm looking for. I'm afraid the shop appears to only deal in Fender and Line 6 amps, but I'd be willing to grab one through an online dealer.

Well, first off, what kind of music do you like to play?

Frankly, for metal and hard rock, I suggest a Schecter C-1 Hellraiser. For $50 more than your suggested budget, you could get one with a Floyd Rose if you need one.

For more lighter stuff, blues, classic rock and the like, a Fender might be good. For your budget, might I suggest a Highway Telecaster or Stratocaster.

I havent' tried any Dean or Jacksons, so I suggest you try out a few of them. Oh, and don't forget to look used. You could get a nice deal on a used one if you look in the right place.

I'm a bit more into metal.

I've seen a lot of the Schecter selection, and I really like what they make, but the HR C-1 FR is too expensive, yet it's the cheapest one with a Floyd and a set neck (I like that combination).

I'm not sure why, but I'm not a big fan of Fender. Although the shop does have a couple of Showmasters (like a Strat, except with a set neck, maple top and Seymour Duncan humbuckers) that I like and are in the price range.

Dean and Jackson are good for metal, it's just that most of the models within my price range have either bolt-on necks or fixed bridges, and I really want something with a set neck or neck thru with a tremolo (preferrably locking). Although I guess I just have expensive tastes. sweatdrop

Dean's my brand of choice.
1. Nice and lightweight.
2. Affordable.
3. Most look amazing.

I'd say go with a Dean; I have a V and I'm saving up for an EVO. I saw a Dean bass I like too, haha.

Dean's pretty cool, but I don't like much other than the MLs and Razorbacks. I saw a Dime Shadow ML on Musician's Friend that looked pretty cool and went for $650.

well, there is always prs. set neck and trem. plays nice

but as far as your criteria, schecter would be a great way to go..

i say go with schecter. my dad recently bought a schecter C1 classic ($700), and it's beautiful. it sounds great for anything rock, heavy or soft.

I really like Schecter, but the models I want are at or above $800.
Has anybody here played the Ibanez XPT700 Xiphos? It has great features, but the low price has me a bit worried about the production quality.
I HATE FRET BUZZ.

Please, don't use a Schecter. I only like the customs of that brand. It depends on sound your looking for. You can't really go wrong with an Epiphone with a high gain or alnico pickups. Those should do the job. Ibanez are good too, but they can have too much feedback. You should get a compressor and something with a crunchy treble pickup, and a smooth bass pickup. Try this.

SG-400- $400
Seymour Duncan Super Distortion PU's- $150
Compressor- Somewhere around $100
Total- $650

That will do the job. Don't worry. I'm a Fender lover too. But I like any guitar that has good leads and smooth rhythm. Jacksons will do the job too, but I don't like the quality of them for the price. If you get a Jackson, try a Rhodes model or a Kelly.

My suggestions for guitars (I'm assuming you mean electric guitars):

ESP LTD F-50 - under $300 (I forget the exact price)
Fender Telecaster - $200 and up (there are a lot of different versions of the Tele)
Fender Stratocaster - $200 and up (there are a lot of different versions of the Strat)
Ibanez GAX series - $200 and up

As for amps, I have a Line 6 Spider III and I love it. Marshall makes nice amps, too. I'm not too crazy about Fender and Ibanez amps (I have an Ibanez amp that is total trash). I also have a Peavy amp which is good.

Basically, shop around, play lots of guitars, listen to a lot of amps. I don't recommend buying a guitar from the Internet without first having tried it out somewhere.

Good luck!

Okay. I've made an initial decision.
For the guitar, I'm looking at a Dean Dime Shadow ML. It is well within my price range and has good features and reviews.
For the amp, I have my eye on the Marshall MG30DFX.
What I really want to know is if there are any good, cheap all tube combos, possibly with a 12 inch speaker.

3 things I need to ask you.
1. Have you played this guitar?
2. Have you sat down and tried any fo the jacksons, Fenders etc at your shop out?
3. Do know How that guitar will sound with your selcted amp?

If I were you, I'd spend more money on the amp considering that most of the MGs I've played on, well, they weren't exactly the best amps out there. Get a nice tube amp and either wait a bit longer for the guitar, or buy a guitar that's still nice with the money you have left over. The amp does account for most of your sound after all.

Well, I'm not getting the guitar until my birthday (end of February), so I really won't be completely decided (nor will I have a final verdict on the price cap) until then. One thing I definitely know, though, is that I do not want a bolt-on neck.
But the new amp I'm getting for X-mas, and I just want something to replace the Fender Frontman 15G that my Squier came with. Something cheap with a good metal distortion.

Make sure you check Craigslist. You can get some really nice stuff for incredibly cheap. My friend got a setup that would normally cost around $2000 for $267 there.
