Seth walked out of the clearing where everyone else was with Tama. He wasn't entirely sure where they would be going, but it really didn't matter too much. Smiling, he asked Tama, "So, should we just go for a walk?"

Tama walked out of the clearing with Seth. She was a little nervous; she'd never been on a date before. And Emy wasn't looking over her shoulder, the sneaky spyer. Which, oddly enough, made her feel relieved and . . . a little apprehensive. She sternly told herself to just not think about it and smiled back at Seth. "Sure; we're certain to see some beautiful scenery."

Seth nodded and said, "Yeah." He walked besides Tama and wondered what they were going to stumble upon. He had to admit, he was a little nervous. At least he could tell that he wasn't the only one. He racked his brain for something to say, but his mind came up with a blank. Then again, maybe it was for the better. Just looking around at all the scenery was nice, and being with Tama made it even better.

It was quiet, but it was a comfortable silence. Tama was enjoying just looking around and being with Seth. The tree stopped for a moment and they came into another clearing. One with a familiar looking pond . . . Tama blinked. "Maybe Chaos was right, and it really does move," she said, smiling at Seth.

Seth was a little surprised to see the pond. But wasn't it supposed to be in the other direction? How can a pond move? He realized he was trying to fit everything into his logic again, and decided to let it be. "That's neat: a moving pond," he said, laughing a little. "I wonder how it happens," he coudn't help but add. Him and his need for logic...

( sweatdrop I'm no good at creating scenery...)

Tama thought for a moment; then, "Well, before we see the pond, it's in a state of quantum uncertainty. It does not exist in any one specific location and only has a probability of being found in any particular spot. Until we actually observe the pond, we hve no idea where it may . . . ," she blushed. "Uh, sorry, I got a little carried away."

Seth listened to Tama's explaination, it sounded very much like something philisophical, if that was the right word to use. "That sort of reminds me of the saying 'if a tree falls in a forrest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?' It questions that which can't be proved." He certainly didn't mind a bit of conversation. Talking with Tama was often enlightening, and he learned things he didn't previously know.

Tama laughed. She loved just discussing things with Seth; usually he made some interesting connections she hadn't thought of. Such as this one. "Not exactly. There are experiments which have been used to prove quantum mechanics," she paused for a moment, thinking. "Can't remember what they are now. But there was an example like that in the book I read. If no person or thing is observing the moon, is it really there?" She smiled. "Einstein thought so; quantum mechanics made him really uncomfortable. He said that he wouldn't believe God played with dice." The smile slipped for a moment. "He was eventually disproven . . . ironically, due to special relativity." The smile returned full force; she loved irony.

He listened carefully to ensure that he understood everything correctly. To be honest, he really didn't understand special relativity. He never read anything that employed them. "Special relativity?"
PostPosted: Tue Nov 20, 2007 5:11 pm

"Special relativity sets lightspeed as an absolute barrier that a particle's velocity cannot cross- Wait, I think I meant general relativity," Tama bit her lip, thinking. After a moment, she sighed, shaking her head. "I can't remember. Anyway, Einstein designed an experiment that would disprove quantum mechanics. The only problem was that it involved a clock, and he forgot to incorporate into his theoretical experiment whichever facet of relativity stated that time passes more slowly at higher velocities." She paused, laughing. "It was special relativity. Everything moves through spacetime at lightspeed, so passage through space by neccessity slows one's passage through time."

Seth smiled, and stated, "That is pretty ironic." He tried to think of some of the ironies of the world that would be interesting. Unfortunately, it all had to do with literature and nothing to do with real life. He reflected on the earlier part of the conversation, and glanced up at the moon. "I think the moon would be there even if no one was observing it, though I have the opposite opinion on whether a tree would make a sound or not depending on whether someone was around."

Tama's smile widened for a moment. "That reminds me . . . Oh, but it's not very nice." She looked around, as if searching for something, then remarked, "Some of the quantum theorists believe the moon is there if no one is observing it, surprisingly." She thought hard for a moment. "Something to do with triggering collapsing wave functions . . . Something like that anyway."

Seth wondered vaguely the specifics of what those of the quantum theorists use to support their theory. It would probably sound better than his logic. "I just don't like the idea that something of matter could just disappear if no one was observing it," He thought a tad more, and continued, "Noise isn't matter, so I can understand there being no sound if no one was around, but I have a hard time believing that matter could just vanish."
PostPosted: Wed Nov 21, 2007 6:41 pm

"Oh, it doesn't vanish exactly, it's just . . . ," she paused, then continued. "I'll let you borrow the book if you want; quantum mechanics is hard to explain. One of the leading theorists said that if quantum mechanics didn't confuse you, you didn't understand it," she stated smiling. "Well, noise is just vibrating air molecules interpreted by the structure of our inner ear, so it may very well be that a tree falling where no one's around wouldn't make a sound."

"Sure, I'd like to borrow the book. Then I might understand it better. Not that you're a bad teacher or anything, it's just a hard concept, like you said," Seth added. "That was my logic behind that question too. I remember Sara saying it once for some reason when I was a kit. Sara said there wasn't a true answer, but at the time I couldn't stand having a question without an answer. Thus, I did a little research and learned about sound waves and decided that there wouldn't be any noise."
