Well I looked at my avatar and thought it was kind of strange...a vampire with a dragon feet and a dragon tail wearing elven clothes and eating ramen. Which made me think about the fact that it's dragon and a human vampire. This made me wonder if anyone else uses crossbreeds like this in their writing or if anyone has read about things like this. I think I might write about something like this now it could open up many options for plotlines...

Hmm, now that you mention it, I haven't really thought as much about it. I think though, that I haven't used crossbreeds in my stories much. Maybe If I really think hard on this, I could remember if I made one or not. rolleyes Let me go check and I'll get back to ya!

Half dragon/half vampire isn't possible unfortunately. Logic speaks here I think. Rananteriel has ideas for halfbreeds. One of her characters is half elf and half demon. Ask her about it.
Halfbreeds have been done so much that finding originality is difficult and almost impossible.

I particularly dislike cross-breeds in either fantasy or sci-fi. Maybe this is because as a biologist I know that the definition of a species is a group of organisms that can reproduce. If two "races" could breed they would be the same species. This might make sense if the "races" were very similar with only minor differences. Real world example might be pygmies in Africa. They are small - like hobbits a little perhaps - but still humans.
I have to disagree with Mel about the vampire thing however, since vampires (assuming they exist) is a supernatural template not a biological species. Thus in theory anything might become a vampire.

A dragon with vampirism then SK? Don't make me laugh! XD There can be a biological explanation for vampires, otherwise they simply could not exist at all. The possibility of their existence obviously exists, so assuming they are around, there will be a biological structure. Ghosts don't require biological structures because they are incorporeal and therefore spectral.
A dragon crossed with a vampire just would not work. However, the possibilities of humanoid creatures other than humans becoming vampires is entirely feasible. Elves, dwarves, and any other similar beings could be subject to it. Dragons though....mmmmm-nnn-naaahhh.

But what if a dragon were bitten by a vampire would it not contract vampirism? Unless the dragon has some kind of resistance it would have to confused

We're talking humanoids and then lizards here for starters. And secondly, first the vampire bites and then they force the victim to drink their blood as well. There is the unpopular idea that once bitten, that's it, you're infected. However, dragons are lizards, and I really don't think a vampire would think "ooh, let's go drink the blood of a dragon and turn it." Dragons simply aren't a vampire's prey to begin with. Why would ANYONE want a vampiric dragon anyway? The idea's just absurd.

Well that's true it is a strange apointless idea but still ... it would be possible very unlikely but possibe at least. Not that it matter either way.

Personally, I wouldn't say it's possible at all. Now, a demonic dragon turning a normal dragon into one like itself is possible.

You know, now that I think about it, why would a vampire want to drink a dragon's blood in the first place? If dragons are cold blooded and have a similar blood type as lizards do, I have to say I am having a hard time trying to picture it.

hypnocrown Yeah, I guess not... sweatdrop I got a question: Do Centaurs count as crossbreeds or not? I don't think so, but I am not sure. Is the origins of centaurs a breeding between a human and a horse? It seems sick, but I wouldn't put something like that past the ancient Greeks. In an anime I like called The Slayers there was a character who was half troll and half man-wolf... so a three way crossbreed I guess. These kind of characters are just weird i think.

Every time I'm presented with a situation where someone thinks something could not happen, I get SO sorely tempted to try and make it work... LOL!
Now I have a plot bunny where some vampire decides to experiment and see how many different creatures, races, species he or she can "vampirise"--and the ramifications deriving therefrom.... smile
Maybe it's s good thing I don't have much time to write just now.

Too bad yer not sure about that SK. I wonder if anybody knows a bit more about it...
That's interesting Jasta. Let us know how that develops. 3nodding
EDIT: I think my avatar is now some kind of crossbreed as it supposed to be a half dragon, half elf being. What do you think everybody?
