CONSERVATIVE BASTARDS! ARGH :SCREAM:
I tried, I really did. I got past my teacher, the principle and then had to make it past the head of the board of education.
This is what the conversation was like:
Head of School Board: So I heard that *Teachers name* philosophy class is doing charity work eh?
Trite: Yeah, I was sent to approve one of the charities by you though.
Head of School Board: Oh? Which charity?
Trite: Planned Parenthood of SE MI.
Head of school board: Absolutely not.
Trite: What?! Why?!
Head of School Board: We do not want to align ourselves with an organization like them
Trite: Why?!?! Don't tell me it's the whole abortion thing!
Head of school board: It is the whole abortion thing, we here at[Trite interrupts]
Trite: But I picked them because they provide low cost health care to women and well everyone and you don't need health insuran...
Head of School Board: THIS is not up to dispute, we will not be siding with an organization who supports abortion!
Trite: YOU KEEP SAYING WE, I DON'T THINK YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORD, BECAUSE YOU SURE DIDN'T ASK ALL OF THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WHAT THEY WANT, NO, IT'S ONLY A YOU!
Head of School: WELL I'M SORRY YOU FEEL THAT WAY, PERHAPS IF YOU...
Trite: STOP... [fights the urge to use a long line of obscenities] I'M DONE WASTING MY TIME HERE. GOOD DAY SIR *marches to the, pushes it open it hard, almost hitting a kid in the hall way and marches out*
SHGFKEJBGHKFHRBGKJREJKHBGFHJKDHGBFKJHFBRVWJHFBHVBFJVFBFVF :SCREAM:
So my philosophy class is doing a major charity drive starting today, till Christmas. Today (Monday 12th) each student from the class gave one charity name and then my group picked 5 out of the list of some 36 that we would actually be doing.
I finagled got in Planned Parenthood of Southeast Michigan into those five. cool MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*cough* Ahem.
Luckily the group I work with is sensible. We tried to pick organizations that actually do something in the community - helping the people physically. I mean it's nice to give to a foundation/organizations like the Sarah G Kommen foundation (breast cancer), but they use that money for research mostly, and they already have a ton of people behind them. & it also helped that one of the girls in my group is due (as in baby) in February.
My reasonings for PP is that they give low cost heath care screenings and medications to people who most likely have no health insurance what so ever. Detroit has taken so many hits with the lay offs at the big three. So that majority of people are now what is known as the 'working poor'.
Although our 5 charities have not yet been approved (by the teacher) I will keep pushing for PP. Though I have a obtuse question. sweatdrop
How should we go about raising money for them? I mean we obviously can't go around having fetus-cookie bake sales, and I want to bring in more of the health care aspect of PP, not abortion.
So what do you gals and guys think? scream

I vote for fetus-cookie bake sales. x3
Also, you could sell armbands from PP.
(or a regular bake-sale. This is America. If there are cookies to be seen, they will be eaten)

It's really great that you're doing that! A lot of people assume that the PP's existence is JUST for abortions, which is completely untrue, it's a good idea to share actual, truthful information with people to stop or prevent unneeded ignorance.
As far as the actual fund raiser, no, fetus cookies are probably NOT the best idea xd If you did baked goods, they wouldn't have to be themed... you could just have pamphlets or something like that to hand out along with a purchase.

Hmm, I go to a college... and the PP here does most of it's fundraising by giving out condoms while asking for donations. Need free condoms? They're all over the health center here!

You could make ribbon shaped cookies and put pink icing on them and then stress the point that P.P. gives breast exams and gynocological (sp?) exams to help find breast and cervical cancer for those who otherwise could not afford that kind of medical care. (I've never met someone who had a problem with people preventing cancer.) I'd also advertise that Planned parenthood gives prenatal care (in some places, you'd have to check if they do it at yours.) Planned parenthood prenatal careI'm not sure how else you could make money... Maybe do a raffle? sweatdrop

Why don't you contact PP of Southeast Michigan and tell them about it and ask them what they think is the best way to help them? They do fundraisers all the time (or so i have heard) so they'd probably know the hows and whats.
Like the condom thing. That would be an awesome idea. Also spread it out across a wider area or something so more people see it.

Don't you love how authority figures, when they make a decision that you don't want them to make, keep going "we", when it's really "I"? Cause it really bothers me. And that guy's an idiot. Does he really think abortion is all PP does?
