Jane’s former self was, in all respects, a child of the great war. He was born into the fighting, to parents who quickly passed him to an orphanage that also served as a training school for studies in magic. He grew up in the war- played with children who played with grinning corpses and started their own small wars against each other. To him, things like fighting, things like working the magic threads that hung within his grasp, were as natural as breathing. Funny how one can become accustomed to such heinous things when it’s all you ever know.
He was not good for staying in classes, for as a whole he found battle magic boring. With the litheness of youth on his side, he could easily escape with an armful of books onto the outside of what was an old cathedral, its initial purpose long forgotten. Sometimes he would stretch himself across the banisters and simply stare at the nearby city, ruined by war and inhabbited by only the most foul creatures. More often, though, he spoke with the old stone gargoyles when he could manage to prod them awake with his magic. They seemed to never run out of stories- they had been there from the rise and the fall of the city, and the time before the war ever began. The boy gained new perspective on the world from the backs of those ancient statues, though he was dubbed a failure by his mentors. It seemed to him as if he should never be pulled away from that rooftop, and as if the old stone’s riddles would always be there for him to puzzle over.
But then the Sickness came and things changed. Teachers and students alike began to fade away right in the very halls. With the war abruptly ended, the orphanage became more of an infirmary than a school. It was clear the shielding hexes didn’t work, yet still children and teens everywhere were being shut up. The boy took to teaching himself about what he could from old texts in his boredom.
All he ever knew was what he saw of the war, though he often tried to imagine what it must have been like before. Souls were collected up without warning, his own included, and it seemed as if he might finally know after all.

Personality: Ms. Withrow is by far one of Gaia’s oldest citizens. She’s a very homely old woman, with all the charm of a pitbull, and jowls that would put a bull-dog to shame. However, as far as health goes, she seems as fit as any of the youngsters that populate Gaia with the one exception that is her eyes. The woman has cataracts that has eaten away at her vision until she can only see out of the corners of her eyes on a good day.
Why Ms. Withrow was ever chosen to get a child should be a mystery in itself. She’s a bitter old hag, and very strict in the ways of what she calls ‘tradition’ (meaning not only is she racist, but she’s also got a pretty medieval way of thinking). She was never, ever a nice person in the general sense of the word, living and surviving in hatred, though she blames most of her attitude on her deceased husband (who killed himself- wonder why?) and claims to be righteous through use of biblical scriptures and the fact she’s Catholic (which may be considered an evil all its own, har har). We’re talking about a woman who thinks the Salem witch trials and the Spanish Inquisition were all justified acts, a woman who still thinks stoning is the best corporal punishment! Withrow claims to be adopting a child for the sake of passing her knowledge on to the future generations. For God’s sake, woman, just write a book...
