A popular children’s toy called Aqua Dots, also know as Aqua Beads, are being recalled after tests found chemicals in the toy that can turn into a date rape drug if swallowed.

It's not really a toy. It's an arts and crafts set of beads. I don't think small children would be playing with them, but I think they used industrial solvent instead of glue to be cheap and when they swallow it it interacts with their body chemistry and they will be knocked unconscious or become comatose.

GHB was originally for powerlifters, and in some parts of the world, it's sold as floorcleaner. I read something along the lines that the chemical is cheaper than the usual glue they use or something. I'll have to dig it up later.
It's also called Bideez in Australia.
Yes, the product says 4+. However, I know I've had some scary moments with Liam. Heck, even my dogs have a nasty habit of trying to eat plastic items. I'm tired of these companies that are out to make a buck at the cheapest way possible. No liability, no quality checks.

GHB is also used to treat narcolepsy. What was the name of this "toy" again ninja
But seriously, I'm with you all the way Luna. This is ridiculous, the need to have more safety checks.

I took Lissa's back. Because while I might have kept it if I just had the four year old who doesn't put things in her mouth, Bella does. And ALSO while I keep the beads put away, Bella gets into things. And I don't have eyes on her 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
five children in Australia got sick and two in the US. One in the US was in an unresponsive coma for a little under a week.

Hmm... Yeah. These recall situations are getting pretty ridiculous. It seems every time we turn around.. We're pulling something off the shelves at work. Did you guys know that a week ago from friday, the regular fisher price medical kits were recalled? not hte pink one.. but the unisex version? We had to pull ours and move them all to the RTV... It seemed kind of a quiet thing..
but, from working at TRU... word is that TRU has hired an independant contracter to start testing ALL THE TOYS in our store... to test for stuff since some of our manufacturers aren't doing their jobs properly. Anything they find is being reported, and we'll remove them from the public immediately.
Also, if you have a recalled toy.. you can either send it back to the manufacturer... which if it's like fisher price or mattel (which is one big toy conglomerate anyways)... you can send it. they send you a voucher which is almost like a check for X amount of dollars...
If it is through a small company like the makers of aqua dots, you can take your product to ANY toys r us. We will take it without a receipt even.. just if you have no receipt, you get store credit and the most recent price for it in the system...
