The sun was setting.
Yen Ha looked up at it with wonder. During the day the sun was bright, so piercingly bright that he could never look at it. Strange that now it was heading to sleep that it was dull, a disc of orange instead of burning yellow. Briefly he wondered why. Was the sun tired? Did it lose strength that it recovered during the night. He wondered what happened to it when it faded from view and left them with the moon and stars as guidance through the night.
His white fur was dappled with orange light and for a moment the lanky, weedy looking male looked serene. Nothing calmed him more than dusk; the light, the atmosphere. The birds quieted, lions began to slow down. The world seemed to stop turning altogether.
Peace. He felt so at peace.
He almost purred. Almost. He sat, his tail twitching slowly from side to side, almost as if in rhythm to a silent song.
Nothing. Nothing could spoil this moment...or so he thought at that time.

Zuri watched the sun set in amazement. The sky was so beautiful at this time of day. She watched it slowly sink into the ground when she noticed a figure blocking part of the large setting sun. She approached it slowly, then realizing it was another lion. Perhaps he would keep her company under the beautiful sky.
"Hello," she said as she approached him. "Isn't it beautiful? The sun setting and all?"

He started at a voice, his head whipping around so fast his neck gave a painful twinge. His beautiful, teal eyes narrowed and for a moment he seemed to be sizing up the stranger. His body tensed nervously and he shifted his weight from one side to the other.
Yen Ha, whiskers flinching with distrust, watched her as if glancing away would spell the end. "Beautiful?" He snorted. "It's just colour." But that was a lie. He adored this time of day, enjoyed how relaxed it made him feel. It was meditation for the lion who was normally so tense. He did wonder, every time he saw it, why it was that colour and why it was so beautiful that it melted away the coldness of his heart each time he saw it.
"Besides, it happens everyday, it's nothing special." He stood, preparing himself to leave, and dared to take his eyes from her.

"Well, I think that its quite a beautiful sight if you ask me," said Zuri. "Leaving so soon? I've hardly gotten a chance to enjoy your company. Why don't you stay a while longer?"
It would be a shame had he left her so soon. She could use the company, especially with another male. It had been a while since she had been in a male's company - aside from her brother at least.

He gave an amused snort, the smile on his face clearly not genuine. Enjoy his company? She really didn't know him, did she? Yen Ha didn't really have any friends, he was too much of a nuisance, too much in the mind of being better than anyone else.
He swished his tail wide and gave a mock bow of his head. "I don't think anyone would enjoy my company, especially those who don't understand the way I think." He blinked his smoky-green eyes and sat, testily.
"You don't look like you'd understand either." He sighed. "Why does no one understand me here?" He mumbled to himself.

"I could try to understand you," offered Zuri. She didn't feel that she misunderstood him in anyway, but perhaps she was still in the process of misunderstanding him. Did he not want her company? He had only just met her and already had a negative opinion about her? Zuri frowned at the thought, shrugged it away. "Here, why don't you tell me about yourself, maybe just what you are thinking. Then I can try to understand you."

"I'm the unfortunate lion who was born a pridelander. Pridelanders are boring, idiotic lions. They don't know anything about anything." He swung his tail. "I on the other hand, was blessed with the gift of knowledge and wisdom. I could have done so much but this pride crushes me." Yen Ha liked to think himself an intellect, liked to think himself as someone wonderful who could have done so much.
He turned his head back to the female and eyed her suspiciously. Why did she care about him? No one seemed to care about him.
"Why would you want to understand me anyway? You don't even know me."

"You seem disappointed that, as you say, no one understands you," started Zuri, trying to explain why she wanted to try to understand him. Why did he combat her company so much? "I want to understand you to make you...less disappointed maybe. Besides, I could use some company and you might even enjoy mine. As you said, Pridelanders are boring and idiotic. But I'm not a Pridelander." Zuri turned away, glancing out at the sunset sky somemore before speaking again. "Don't think I'm a boring person, I have a pretty interesting life. Or at least, I had."

Not a pridelander, eh? His interest peeked and he turned his head back towards her. He was not a macho looking lion. Everything about him was dainty and delicate. His mane was fine and short and fluttered in the breeze as if it were silk, his face held a proud muzzle and was set with two brilliantly coloured eyes. His body was petite, slim rather than bulky and his muscles were certainly under-developed for a male his age. He was called a wimp, or a nerd and sometimes those names did seem suitable even if they were hurtful.
"I need intelligent company else I'll wither and die like a flower without water." He curled a lip. "You might not be a pridelander but you'll probably still be boring." He glanced towards the horizon. It wasn't fair. He wanted to be out there, to explore and learn but he couldn't. He was stuck here due to his own physically inferiorities.
Angered that the world was always flaunting itself, he thrashed his tail from side to side as if it were a whip. "How could someone like you survive out there?" He demanded, waving a paw at the roguelands.

Survival. That was something that Zuri knew plenty about. All she really knows is survival, the social aspect of her life had been long lacking and recently becoming new to her. It was new, fresh and exciting. At this stage there was nothing that Zuri really wanted more than to socialize and have fun. Sure, she wanted to see her mother again, but even a want like that had started to slip her mind recently. Life was all about having fun to Zuri now - but that doesn't mean she will forget her past. The memories of her past will always stay with her, she can use them as tools in her life. "When I was a young cub I was separated from my family," started Zuri, beginning her life story. Her life story was a lecture in its own way. A lecture about survival, independence and maturity. But it was a story nonetheless, and an exciting adventure-filled action-packed story at that. "I used to always be with my family. My brother and I and our mother. We all became separated from each other. I was left on my own, I had nearly no knowledge of how to take care of myself. My mother had only been able to teach me a very small amount of the basics hunting before we were apart. On my own, I learned to hunt and take of myself rather quickly. I was frightened almost all the time at first, scared, sad and alone. I traveled forever to look for my family and in a way, I still am. Along the way, I made friends, more of acquaintances really due to my inability to stay somewhere too long. Although I found a traveling partner at one point, but we were separated when being attacked by hyenas while coming to the Pridelands. I haven't seen her since. She was like family to me, and then I lost her, just like I lost my real family." Zuri paused. Whenever she thought about the hyena attack, she felt a slight sensation of pain from where one of the hyenas had managed to strike her, right on her side. The scar was now faded too lightly to really see, but the memory burns inside her. "When I got to the Pridelands on my own, I luckily reunited with my brother. And since then, we've stayed here, waiting for our mother to come. Hoping she will, at least." She turned away for a moment, but then looked back to the lion. "I can take care of myself - I am intelligent. My company will not make you wither or die. And I certainly hope you still don't think that I'm boring, cause you couldn't be more wrong."

He listened and though his face seemed impassive, inside his heart was racing. Adventure! Such adventure! He had always craved to go "outside", to discover the world. Yes, there was loss and suffering out there too, and that was what held him back, but there was knowledge also. A knowledge that he wanted to sink his teeth into.
He turned to her, facing her fully for the first time since their meeting. He felt a little guilty about how he had spoken to her, but as always was too proud to admit it.
"Do you want to know my family story?" It was obvious this wasn't a question. She was going to hear it whether she liked it or not. "I was one of four in my mother's second litter, one cub in ten. I was neither special nor independant. So I left as a juvie to become my own lion. Here I stayed, growing, pondering, craving. Yet here I remain." He growled. "I can't leave this damn, cursed lands. I hate seeing those dopey, happy faces of pridelanders. I'm forced to stay here because of my size, forced to enjure this place for the rest of my life. I'm trapped." He huffed. "That is why I'm perhaps a little less than cheery than most." He huffed.

"Why don't you just leave then?" she asked. His story sounded strange to her, it sounded to her that he was making an excuse to stay in the Pridelands even though he claims to dislike it. "Your size shouldn't be an issue. As I told you, I was able to survive as just a young cub. You should be able to defend yourself without problem, its not as tough as you are making it out to be. Yes, its scary and rough at first, but things change. You're older than I was, it should be easier for you." She hoped that she didn't offend him, but she wasn't sure why he wouldn't just leave the Pridelands if he really felt that way.

He growled, surprising for Yen Ha despite his grouchiness. He never usually did anything threatening towards others in case they reacted badly and decided to attack him. "Easier?" His muzzle wrinkled. "Rogues could find compassion and mercy for a cub, not for a grown male. Males are territorial, males are not natural hunters. I am not a natural hunter." He whisked his tail high, held his head proud and glanced at her through his colourful eyes.
"How do you expect me to feed myself without huntresses around? How do you expect me to protect myself when I'm too tired to listen out for the soft tread of dangerous paws?"
His eyes shone, revealing the emotion of his little speech. "Don't come and lecture me, rogue-cub who was. If rogue life was so wonderful, why then do you seek a dull place such as this for shelter?"

"I was trying to find my family!" responded Zuri, screaming. She wasn't aware of how loud she was shouting nor how angry she sounded. She was furious at this lion in a moment, annoyed with him very quickly. She tried to resist her anger from leaking out any further. She restrained the best she could, but growled back. Finally, she let loose on the lion. "You know what you are? You're spoiled. You expect things to be done for you. You expect others to hunt for you. You're lucky for that, you have no idea what it means to be on your own and you never will with that type of attitude. You think you are so smart, but what you really are is ignorant. Ignorant to the world outside the Pridelands and ignorant to the fact that you are just like all the other Pridelanders. You're spoiled."

Yen Ha, suddenly terrified of this female, dropped to the ground like a rock. His belly pressed against the dry grass, his ears flattened. His eyes were wide and his sides heaved with each panicked breath. He certainly did look a sight!
An image of the hunting lionesses flashed through his mind, their rippling muscle, their fangs and claws. If - by some miracle - Yen Ha found a mate, he certainly would be the submissive of the pair.
But her words struck home and a little of his pride flaked away, lost amongst her words. "Fine." He raised himself slightly and crawled backwards, his tail curling around a hind leg. Something niggled in his heart, something that upset him and Yen Ha was rarely upset.
He knew what it was, though, and it upset him more than he cared to admit. Guilt, a heart-wrenching guilt that he had struck out at a female, a stranger, who was only trying to be a friend. But again, his pride got in the way, an apology seemed impossible to grasp.
"Fine." He hissed. "I'll show you. I'll show you all." He curled a lip, though there was fear in his eyes. A fear of the unknown. A fear of the outside world. "I'll show you that Yen Ha was made for something greater!" He stood again, raising his head, though he was careful not to let this female too close.
"Just you wait and see."
Who knows...maybe out there he'd learn some manners. Maybe out there he'd learn compassion. Or not...
And before he could change his mind, the white lion turned and like a white wave rolling across the sea, he departed, running as if demons from hell snapped at his heels. If he looked back now, if he faltered just once, he wouldn't be able to bring himself to go. He had to keep running. Had to keep going.
But he couldn't help it. He paused, cast her a glance over a white shoulder and his eyes softened. So, in the end it had taken the harsh words of a rogue to show him the way.
But he couldn't thank her either, damn pride!
Instead he opened his jaws and roared goodbye. Who knows, maybe if they met again he'd thank her then. Thank her for setting him on his path. He turned and walked onwards, his coat bathed in a fiery glow from the setting sun.
(( Thank you so much for the RP <3 It's so strange how characters seem to take on a life of their own. Scary too! Yen Ha has turned out quite different from what I planned! He's turned into a mean, spoiled brat! I hope we can RP these two again sometime. I'm hoping Yen Ha will join the Chinese Pride, so maybe if she happens by they can meet, or if Yen Ha returns to see his family! Thanks again! )
