I have to say, as an 80s starter with Doctor Who, that Ace was COOL! I always wanted my hair in a French plait, just cos she had one, my first reaction on winning a Blue Peter badge was "I'm like Ace now!", and she was just plain amazing. More info on Ace here... http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Ace

Ace kicked serious arse. Just a shame they never did more episodes with her in, really.

Yeah. Apparently if Series 27 had gone ahead, Ace was going to be written out anyway in an Ice Warrior story. We never saw what happened to her on screen, although she was killed off in a DWM strip (before I started reading it). I'd like to see her back. When I was filling in the Season Survey in DWM, one of the questions was "Who or what would you most like to see return?" I put Ace, with the explanation that the 70s fans got Sarah Jane back for an episode, what about Ace for the 80s ones?

That would be pretty neat. I actually recall hearing somewhere that their eventual plan was to have it revealed that she was actually a Time Lord (hence why she was able to create a time storm in her bedroom and get flung through it to the far distant future, which even with the influence of Fenris you'd think would be sodding difficult), after which The Doctor would leave her on Gallifrey to serve as a good influence on the other Time Lords' apathy.

I thought it was that she was going to train as a Time Lord, which just puzzled me even more! Your theory definitely makes more sense.

I've only seen one serial with Ace, but she was awesome... I admit, I did my hair in a french braid as soon as I saw her wearing it xd
