I just want to hear what the other VGPs have to say from their experiences in their favorite videogame genre. What this thread is about is to share with each other what game of what genre would be most beneficient for those newbs to separate themselves from newbs. Whether it may be one of a series, which may be most newbie-friendly, or one that has most of the basics of any of it's genre, being one of the central, ideal game to make comparisons of.
For instance. In my experience of RPGs, I believe that Final Fantasy 6 is one of the best games to start off with, as it has a lot of the basics of most games, plot-wise and system-wise. Can't be the center of everything in the RPG Genre though, as the RPG genre can be quite diversed, in ways of setting, battle systems, etc. I just find that FF6 is one of the most newbie-friendly games, and one that would give more experience with RPGs than most others that I know of.
o_o' And I don't think one person can ever come up with the ideal games for starters of every single genre there are, as there are so many games out there.
And as for this being related to the VGP, if any of us were to expand on a certain genre, this thread may help them choose what game to start with.

Well, if you're going to start playing First Person Shooters then I think you should start of with either : Doom I or Quake I. Mainly, because they're more easier, and that basically makes them more FPS friendly, and they're violent, which assures you that most FPSs will be violent or Rated M. (excluding a few as Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 : Echoes) Well, and also, since they're older games, they will bring you to play the other parts of those series and since those are pretty good games, they'll make you want to play more FPSs.
.. I hope I did that correct.

Don't worry. o_o You did it right. As long as you get your opinion through to the others on why you think it's a good game for starters of that genre. This is helpful for us Paladins as well as anyone who may be asking such questions like this.

I know, but you made a long nice post about FF6, while I made.. a paragraph, or something, so yeah. ^^~ But atleast I did it correct, anyways, this is good, because my friend wants to play his first tactic RPG, He has GBA/PS2/GC. I was thinking Tactics Ogre, since it explains class change and that sometimes Tactic RPGs can get slow, and how in Tactic RPGs, they talk alot, but that isn't really bad.. >>;

Yeah. o_o That's cool. I play Tactic RPGs as well. However.. the tactic RPGs I play are ones that are only released in Japan. x_x It's mostly all the newer Super Robot Wars games. Just got MX recently. These series are super long and what not.
Anyway, as for what I know of Tactic RPGs in the US. My friend recommended me to play Disgaea I think, for the huge freedom you have in the game. You can pretty much get as many people as you want in the game itself, the game has so many classes or so I've heard, each character can get up to level 1000 or something, while being able to get stronger / or weaker, with a form of class changing or something, to an infinite point. o_O ... or until your stats hit the cap or something, which is insanely high, I've heard. Which is plausible for it's friggin huge max level.
Well.. I can't really explain everything myself since I've never really tried the game out.
Oh yeah. This same person recommended Super Mario RPG as well, for RPGs. A lot of the people that has played this said that it was a must. o.o I never got around to play it yet though..

Another thing and a warning about FPS's is that engine differences or coding differences make the gameplay sometimes completely different.
I've played CS for about 3 years... Stick me into a fast DM type game... (Like Quake.) And I suck like crap. So I recommend:
1. CS for more tatical purposes. (There are newbie servers around and if you wander onto a clan server, if they're nice they might give you a helping hand.)
2. Unreal Torny for DM speed purposes. Same as CS with the servers... Though players tend to be abit less merciful. (Because of the speed they don't really have time to speak.)
But that's my suggestions for online FPS's. Offline you can basically just get into any game since it'll start off easy enough for you to get the hang of it. 3nodding

FPSs, are obviously my favorite Genre.
Theres different kinds, and you can mix so many genres with First Person Shooters. You got FPSRPG, FPSAdventure, and so on.
The most newbie FPS which released recently is Doom 3. Because the gameplay is simple, yet so fun. Remember to bring extra undies The A.I may be dumb if you just place them in a custom map, but if you have extensive knowledge in C++, you can script the A.I and make HL2's A.I look bad.

For the Staragety gamers out there I would highly recomend Star Craft: Brood War. It has a simple storyline and it is chalengeling and fun, you have the choice of three races, Terran, Protoss, and Zerg. Terran is basicaly the human race. Protoss is often mistaked for a Android race because of what they look like and how advanced they are, but they are just an advanced race of Alians with higher technology. Zerg is the main baddys, they are a inferior in intelegence alian but they are mighty and they grow quickly. Protoss has the Stronges race and the best technology but they take much longer to build seeing they're stuff is superior, Zerg is quicker to build and are fairly strong but they have a low defence. Terran is mildy fast and mildy strong. Many become very good with Terran seeing there probably the easiest to do and understand. (The speek comon english and no foren words) Protoss speeks in a english but they have there own words for some stuff. Zerg, umm ... Zerg is just ununderstandable. There is online play and there is a storyline. Last time I checked it was avalable for PC and N64. The PC Graphics are better and you can play online if you get the expantion pack, but it is still avalable for N64. The storyline to me is one of the best. For my final words, Long live Fenix, Long Live Tassadar, and Long Live Protoss!
For Adun!
(Incase you didn't notice, I'm a Protoss Fan.)
Best SBG out there, in my eyes. Also nowa days it should be pretty cheep in a Wal-Mart or somewhere like that. May be sold at your local [Game-Stop] for around 10 to 15 bucks.

Starcraft isn't really newbie friendly. Although, it is a good game.
Games like Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 are newbie friendly. Command and Conquer Generals wasn't as good though...because it felt more like a Blizzard game than Westwood style.

EarthBound is a good starting block for RPGs as well...I felt it was anyway. It was certainly my gateway to them.
