---Why?: The young Velvet is very much Tori's little brother, and she adores him. He may be a dog, and a lot smaller than she, but she hasn't got a problem with it. When he was still a fluffy little plush, she used to carry him around and curl up with him to sleep. She still does sometimes, much to his delight. Toby is usually cheerful and energetic, as well as very affectionate and loyal. He can be aggravating now and then, as little brothers can be, but it takes a great deal of barking and pestering on his part to really wear at his sister's patience; and by the time he manages that, he's just about worn himself out. If he gets too crazy for her, she'll just bat him with her paw and send him on a little tumble, with no hard feelings on either side. She looks forward to when he 'grows up,' like Iden says he will.
Least favorite person: Vlad
---Why?: It's not so much that she actively dislikes him, but more that she's ambivalent in her feelings about him. He's not 'safe,' that's for sure; he's clearly dangerous, if he wishes to be. He's often intentionally intimidating, which usually cows the meek pard with a fair amount of ease. She doesn't like that, but it doesn't precisely bother her; her experience with people other than her 'mother' being limited to Vlad, she pretty much assumes that's just the way of things. It does distress her somewhat when he upsets Iden, but as he also seems to make her happy, it evens out in Tori's thinking. He's never offered Turmali any real harm, though, and is just an occasionally threatening presence. The vampire has been kind to her (perhaps sincerely, perhaps not), is relatively free with scratches and pets depending on his mood, and every now and then can be drawn into some sort of conversation. That he sings earns him a few points with her, but not enough to conquer her ambivalence.

Describe one important memory, good or bad:
Turmali's ears canted forward as she slid herself off the living room couch and headed for the short hallway. Something in the atmosphere of the apartment was somehow..off, tonight. Come to think of it, it had been since very early that morning, just before dawn. There was a disconcerting air she just couldn't place her paw on. There'd been voices from the other room not long ago, hushed and angry, but she hadn't paid them much attention. Arguments were nothing new here.
The growing pardling wiggled her nose on her approach to the closed bedroom door, sniffing quietly. Scents drifted to her from under the door, the strange one of the vampire, and the comforting one of her mother. Both were familiar...or were they? Something had changed in her hanni's smell; Tori would have called it 'wrong,' if she hadn't grown up in a place where the smell of the undead was as normal as the smell of the living.
But what unsettled her was that, where they had always been separate and distinct, the undead-smell limited to people and creatures who had always been that way so far as she was aware, now the living-smell had been overtaken by the first. Was that simply the way of things? No, it couldn't be...some internal instinct told her it was outside the natural order of the world.
Her multicolored tail flicked nervously from side to side. What was going on? She didn't understand, but she wanted to desperately. Sitting back on her haunches, Tori raised her paw and thumped against the door. When her knocking went unanswered several times, she gave it up and simply mewled.
Her uncharacteristically loud plea for entry was answered by the slow shuffling of bare feet on carpet, before the door was pulled half-open.
A bleary Iden peered out, rubbing her eyes with the back of a too-pale hand. After a moment, she peered down at her visitor with changed eyes; they were the same bright red as Vlad's, not the cheerful green Turmali had come to associate with her mother. Finally, the girl sighed and spoke, offering a brief glimpse of new fangs, "Tori?"
In answer, Tori slipped into the room, winding herself around Iden's legs until she took the hint and dropped down to the floor, and pardling-level. Tori was pulled immediately, but gently, into a cool embrace.
"Hey there, pretty thing. How's it goin'?" Iden's voice was hoarse and soft. "Think you can get used to this?"
She tipped her ears forward, regarding her mother seriously. The girl looked a bit different, smelled a bit different, and felt a bit different, but...she was still hanni. That was the important part. Slowly, Tori nodded. Yes; mother was still mother, different or no.
Iden hugged her closer, pushing her face against the soft fur of Tori's shoulder. "Then maybe I can, too."

Pets/Familiars/Bonded Critters

Cintec de Jale: With all the pooka Iden's got hanging around, it was inevitable that at least one of them would end up attaching to Tori. "Tec" for short, this little mourning dove mimic adores the shifter, and the feeling's mutual. Unfailingly, it breaks into song every dawn and dusk, delighting Tori every single time.
Ghostpus: This one's, well...no one's really sure how this one happened. Honestly, no one really wants to know. It just sort of appeared one evening, and apparently decided to stick around. It only shows up at night, and though it makes frequent attempts at scaring everyone, it's usually unsuccessful.

Race: Human Vampire

About: Until very recently, Iden was an (almost) normal college student, studying mediaeval history, but thanks to a strange visitor and a resurrected vampire-prince, things have definitely...changed. Now, no longer human nor college student, she's struggling for some sort of way to balance and hold on to herself. Hopelessly tangled up in and with the one who turned her world upside-down, there isn't much she can do but try to keep on going.
She's something of a magnet for animals, but fortunately the feeling's mutual, and as a result she's attracted or just plain collected a fair number of all sorts of critters, some strange and some relatively normal. Since most of them insist on hanging around, or at least dropping by on a regular basis, it's turned things into a sort of chaotic menagerie; a good part of what prompted her recent move from an apartment in Scotland to a house in Gaia.
Somewhere along the line, Iden came into possession of a certain item that allows her, to a limited extent, to travel between worlds, and to take anyone or anything she happens to be touching at the time with her. So far as anyone knows, it only works to get from Earth to Gaia and vice versa, and maybe to hop from one place to another within them, provided it's somewhere she's already been. And only if there's a door at both ends. Judging by occasional comments Hyksos makes, Iden's strange little upside-down ankh may have something to do with the errais, but neither of them bother to elaborate.
Iden, loudly stubborn and quick to argue, often isn't as tough or confident as she tries to make herself seem. She definitely has he fair share of flaws, and chief among them is some pretty serious emotional instability, which has a lot to do with how she got into the mess she's in in the first place; once he'd figured her out, it became a fairly simple thing for Vlad to exploit. Though she tends to shy away from most people, she can be heavily dependent on some. Her friend, Naraka, is one of the latter; as is Vlad, of course.
Why 'hanni'?: Hanni is what Tori's taken to calling Iden. She picked it up from Hyksos, an erras; it means 'mother' in erras-talk. Tori liked the sound of it better, for some reason.
