It was a quiet afternoon; the sun was shining, the birds were singing, squirrels were scampering about in their playful way. But Duncan was not cheerful. He trudged through the dried leaves of the forest floor; his head hung low and his braded main covering part of his face. It seemed like a long time that he traveled like so before he came to the edge of the woods. He raised his gaze and looked out over the small clearing, taking in his surroundings. For all he knew, he had never been here before, and was therefore lost in this unknown land yet again.

Most folks would accuse Faolen of being a bit prissy in the way he moved. Slowly, as if there had to be a purpose to the movement or else it was lost on something less than meaningful. Right now the multi-colored stallion was making his way across a clearing. He was headed in the opposite direction of home. Looking up, rather surprised eyes found a stallion not 20 yards away from him with a rather defeated look about his face. A snappier pace was picked and before long, Faolen was much closer to the other. “Oi there, why’re ye lookin’ defeated?” Faolen had the burr of his father, but much less thick. I mix of his mother and father as most children were.

Duncan's mood lightened a little as the stallion came up to him. He tried to fake a smile. "Oh, no reason I guess. For the most part I am usually happy; I like being in this land. I just feel... Lost... All the time." he lowered his gaze for a moment, lost in thought of his former home. Snapping out of his memories he shook his head, small strands of his black and white main straying across his face. "Anyway, how rude of me. I haven't even introduced myself. My name is Duncan; and you are?"

C’mon now, even as dense as Faolen could be, he saw the fakeness in the smile and wanted to change it. “Bein’ lost is jest a way to find something new to do.” Faolen had wandered the lands for several years now, not near as many as his father but enough to be able to find things carefully. “If ye let it get ye down.. It’ll stomp on ye Duncan. Took me a few years to get it right. …” A pause before another genuine grin, “Though some say I’m a bit dense.. Ye’ll have it in no time.” Shifting weight from one side to the other Faolen nearly startled, “Oh! ‘n Me name is Faolen if ye will. Pleased to be meetin’ ye.” His mood was high and having company didn’t hurt it at all.

"Ya'know, you're right. I know that. Just gets me down after wandering for so long." He gave a sigh and shifted his weight, pawing the grass lightly with his black hoof. "Anyway, I'll get over it." Duncan whispered more cheerfully. "You dont talk like me or any other Soquili I have met. Are you not from here too?" He asked with a bright curious grin.

“Oh no, I’m from here. Ye should hear my dah.” Faolen was feeling the urge to break out into the deep burr of his father. Well, not really deep it made him want to laugh at how bubbly it was sometimes. “Ye’ll be in fer a surprise if ye be meetin’ mah dah. He talks jest as I am now.” Nothing really ever kept Faolen down for too long, talking about being sad from travels wasn’t fun and so he’d just nix of that unless it became important again. “Where are ye headed?”

"To tell the truth, I am not going anywhere in particular. Just trying to find a place that I may call a home." Duncan shifted his weight to his left and flicked his tail left and right once. "And to meet as many new soquili as I can..." Duncan thought. With a conclusive smile he trotted past Foalen a few steps his ears perked high to take in any sound. "So what is this place?"

“Finding a home can’t be that hard.” He himself had just gotten done with the exact same task not very long ago. All that had really been required was shelter, plentiful food nearby and also a nearby water source. His was just a little pond, but it suited just find. “Meetin’ folks.. I can help ye with that’n.” The best place to find people seemed to be by following the river as long as you fancied. All sorts drank the cool water. “This place? Jest a clearin’ for me it’s an overnight restin’ place when I head home.”

"A home to me is a place where I can feel comfortable and safe with a few friends i can regard as family; not just a place I can live." He turned to face Faolen. "And that can be pretty hard to find if you don’t know too many people. Anyway, what was it you were saying about meeting others?" He lowered his head to the ground and nibbled on a few strands of grass, ripping them from the ground as he raised his head to watch Faolen again.

Home for Faolen had always been with his mam and dah. Az and Cael had made his childhood a happy one, playing with his brother - Finn and enjoying life as it was. The most important lesson he had learned really was that “Land is land.. Ye’ve got to make it what ye want.” From his father. At that time it hadn’t made too much sense, but the older he got.. The more ways it could be interpreted. “What about meetin’ people? It’s fun.. Jest wander along side the river.. I do it all the time in order to make friends an’ stuff.”

Duncan had seen a few streams, a few ponds, a lake, but he had never seen a river since he left the mountains his home heard live on. He nodded knowingly at the stallions words; everyone needed water. "So, where is this river you speak of? What sort of Soquili have you run into along its edge?" Duncan was curious and beginning to grow anxious about meeting new people. "I hope no one was truly cruel though..." He thought to himself as he imagined all the different beings he would meet along the river.

Faolen was beginning to feel like he had found someone that needed guiding and care… what a strange thing for him to happen upon. Smiling lazily he pointed towards the direction he had just come from with his muzzle, “If ye head that direction at a day’s walking ye’ll be able to hear it.” It was just a matter of not turning during that day’s walking. Once the river could be heard not one person ever missed it.. “There are the truly cruel, but ye learn what to look for and learn to avoid them.” He’d never run into them but that was because he had always steered clear.

"Thank you for the directions!" He paused for a moment. "But this means, I guess, good-bye." Duncan gave a sigh and shuffled his hooves a bit. "Since we will be going opposite directions..."

The directions really weren't anything special, but Faolen felt himself preening just a little bit from the compliment. "Good-bye eh? So keen on gettin' rid of me." Faolen had figured on just talkin' for awhile but truth be told his parents probably would get cranky if he showed up days late to visit them. "Where do yah think ye'll be headin' first, eh?"

"Oh no! Not keen on getting rid of you!" He had just made a mistake. Dunken laughed a little nervously hoping he hadnt offended his new friend. "I just didnt want to keep you from going if you were needed somewhere else." He looked towards the direction Faolen had indicated the river was in. "I have no particular place to be, so, anywhere along the river!"
