I pictured a rainbow You held in your hands I had flashes But you saw then plan I wondered out in the world for years While you just stayed in your room I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon! Name Thayne Meaning Thane [a feudal lord or baron in Scotland], attendant warrior; follower; from Old English Gender Male Birthdate 1o.29.o4 Pack South Seaside Pack Rank Beta Coat Black with silver from his nose to his tail and the insides of his ears Markings Red Celtic swirls in a "torque" around his neck and in bands around his front ankles Eyes Bright yellow Current Personality Mostly calm and happy, except when his shoulder bothers him Physical Thayne's a fairly big wolf, following the path of his mountain brothers. A thick layer of fat and a heavy coat only add to his size. He moves smoothly; though not as fast as, say, Tony or his sister, he can cover some ground at a fast lope and not be tired for a long time. Unfortunately, his shoulder hinders him some now, but he's getting back to normal. Skills Head-on fighter, extraordinary sense of smell, very quiet for his size. Attack dice 4d8 Defense dice 5d6
Family Father Alpin - deceased Mother Sloane - deceased Siblings Amaury [M] - assumed dead, Aithne [F] - dead, Niall [M] - dead, Ismene [F] - assumed dead; Creidne [M] - assumed dead [to Thayne] Mate Tony heart
Current Status Health Almost normal; still healing from a past fight with Kurogane Allies South Seaside Pack, Devvyl and Selia's pack [?], The Outriders, Tyranny of the Forgotten, South Lakeside Pack; Talia, Tsume, Shilah, Kaya Enemies Mountain Valley Pack, Kurogane [or anyone else who would hurt his family, especially his mate, for that matter] Thoughts It's good t' be 'ome. Desires To get better faster, to do his job, get to know the new pups... maybe even have some of his own, someday.
Notes of Interest Thayne speaks with an unusual [for this territory] accent equivalent to a Celtic flourish.
Beta Personality Thayne honestly has no idea what is expected of him as the Seaside beta. Although he remembers his parents and what was expected of them, he's not sure those rules apply as strictly in this pack as they should. Plus, with Tatiana currently beta female but not his mate, the hierarchy is slightly skewed. Luckily, I guess, the pack is small, so it's more the territory than the pack that needs tending. Plus, Thayne has calmed down a lot since his return. The reason? Tony. Adult Personality So much for the mellowness. Thayne's lack of a mate is eating at his soul; it hurts him to see even his alphas happy in their pairing, and guilty of his jealousy. While still violently protective of his pack and their territory, he's still welcome to newcomers as long as they don't represent a threat to the lives of his family or their slowly-settling new life. Unfortunately, with his age comes an onslaught of memories. He's almost afraid to have a mate because he fears he'll end up losing someone else very important to him, just like he lost his pack to the sickness and his sister to the river [so he thinks]. But he's found someone very important to him and he'll be damned if he's letting her pass him by. He's also discovered a part of him he though lay dormant, thanks to his encounter with Kurogane. Now he has to be even more careful, lest his his new berzerker be released... Adolescent Personality Like his pup persona, Thayne is suspiscious of newcomers and strangers; maybe even more so now that he is back in a pack and feels the need to protect said pack from any would-be dangers. He has almost found his comfort zone in packlife and his packmates. Hige and Loki are his stable "siblings," and Devvyl and Selia his "parents." The rest of the pack is rather unknown to him, as they don't seem to know him well enough to speak to him. Perhaps because of this, Thayne seems to have become more calm and reserved, though he will still play with his close company. Hopefully the pups, too, when they get old enough. [He's subconsciously looking forward to being something of a babysitter. whee ] Pup Personality Although initially aloof and suspiscious of strangers, once he found someone he thought he could trust, Thayne attached himself almost immediately [ex. Hige]. After that, he loosened up quite a bit and played with whoever he had happened upon.

You were there at the turnstiles With the wind at your heels You stretched for the stars And you know how it feels To reach too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon! Thayne's original homeland is far north of the neutral grounds where he ended up as a pup. Where he came from, snow stayed on the ground three-quarters of the year and hot weather meant somewhere around fifty degrees. He came from a large pack; Thayne himself was from the betas' second litter. His wolves believed in large families: pups were beloved and more wolves meant more hunters, more protectors for the pack. Prey was remarkably plentiful even in their cold climate, so all the wolves stayed hale and strong from infancy onward. Early on, every pup learned how to hunt and how to protect themselves from other predators -- luckily for Thayne, as it would serve him in good stead later. The pack was comfortable for the wolves who grew up in it, although hierarchy and protocol were extremely rigid [hence Thayne's actions when he first met Devvyl]. This mindset did not do the pack much good when disease hit. The alphas, unfortunately, were the first to go, infested with the painful wasting disease. Thayne's parents tried to assume control of the pack, with limited success. Pack members drifted away from the pack. Hunting parties often found them days later, frozen in the snow.
Eventually the wasting disease spread throughout the pack. The adults sickened first, then transferred it to the pups. When the humans came, there were only three adults left -- slowly dying -- and five pups, including Thayne. The humans clubbed the sickness-ridden adults and took three pups. Thayne and one of his sisters escaped; the two were separated crossing a snow-swollen creek. Thayne was on the bank when his sibling fell in and he was forced to watch the silver and red female be swept away.
It was weeks before he wandered into the neutral grounds of the woods...

I spoke about wings You just flew I wondered, I guessed, and I tried You just knew I sighed But you swooned I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon!
Family -*- Hige -*- The first wolf Thayne met in the neutral lands, and the one he's been closest to ever since. He's not blood-related, but as far as Thayne is concerned, that doesn't matter. If anyone were to threaten Hige, Thayne would try his damndest to kill them. He's not about to lose any more family, not now, not ever.
Loki -*- Thayne doesn't know her as well as he might like, but he's nonetheless protective of her as he is Hige. She makes his brother happy as can be, and as far as Thayne's concerned, that's all that matters. Loki has always been sweet to him and for that, if nothing else, he's quietly attached to her. Lately, though, he's a little wary of his brother's mate, running off from Hige and the pack like that...
Tony -*- A quiet and shy wolf, Tony is the light of Thayne's world as he knows it. He brought her back from the freelands with promises of affection and protection and he means to keep them in every way. He loves her with every fiber of his being and wants nothing more than to keep her healthy and happy in a pack family where she can be free of her old terrors.
Tatiana -*- The other Seaside beta in an odd arrangement of the pack's hierarchy, Thayne's known Tatiana since she was a pup. He watched her grow into a wonderful young female capable of handling whatever comes her way. Thayne's pleased that she's so happy with her new mate and family, and would do whatever he could for her anytime she needed it.
Kovu -*- Thayne doesn't know much of this wolf, but he makes Tatiana happy, so that's enough for him. He'd like to spend more time with the other wolf, but it seems hard with so much to do in such a large area...
Tsume -*- A former Seaside pack member, Tsume left some time ago to be on his own with his mate, Talia. Thayne hasn't seen the quiet older wolf but he'd still be happy to see him if they were to cross paths again.
Talia -*- Talia not only makes Tsume happy, which makes Thayne more than happy, but Talia also holds a special place in Thayne's heart for her help during his fight to protect Tony from Kurogane. Thayne would do anything within his means for this female.
Allies -*- Devvyl -*- The alpha male of Thayne's first joined pack after the death of his birth-pack and Hige's adopted father. As an alpha, he instilled a deep-rooted sense of respect in Thayne; as a wolf, Devvyl showed him kindness to him as a pup that Thayne wasn't expecting after such trauma as he'd experienced, and thereby deepened the respect that Thayne has for him. Now and again he thinks of Devvyl and his mate, Selia, and wonders what they're up to in his old packlands.
Selia -*- Hige's adopted mother, and although Thayne never much interacted with her, he still respects her and is secretly grateful for her -- without Selia, there might not have been a Hige as Thayne knows him, and then he wouldn't be where he is now. He also has a little regret that he didn't get to know Selia better when he was young; he knows now that she would have been a wonderful mother for him as well.
Sashta -*- Thayne met this wolf during his short-lived wanderings, looking for new pack members. They didn't meet for long, and Thayne liked what he knew of her, but hasn't seen her since. Now and again, he wonders how she's getting along...
With a torch in your pocket And the wind at your heels You climbed on the ladder And you know how it feels To reach too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon!

I spoke about wings You just flew I wondered, I guessed, and I tried You just knew I sighed But you swooned I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon!
Neutral -*- Isaac -*- So far, the only wolf Thayne has come in contact with that has ever made him ridiculously uncomfortable. To Thayne, Isaac is a disturbing outsider in the world of wolves, and though the younger male tried to treat him with respect due an elder, a faint smell of iron, a disturbing aura and a less-than-compelling attitude kept Thayne at a considerable distance as a pup. Though he hasn't seen Isaac for a long, long time, Thayne would just as soon keep it that way.
Balan -*- Thayne hasn't seen this wolf in a while. Balan made the trip south with from Devvyl and Selia's pack as Hige's adopted brother, but vanished sometime after arriving. He seemed to be disturbed by unacknowledged demons of some sort, and Thayne once tried to help, but to no avail.
Enemies -*- Kurogane -*- If Thayne ever meets up with this wolf, he'll try his damndest to kill him. Kurogane hurt Tony and threatened her life, as well as the life of the others Thayne loves. Kurogane is, for the moment, one wolf who Thayne will never forgive or forget.
Sen -*- Although Thayne's never met this wolf face-to-face, he'll readily kill this wolf as easily as Kurogane. From what Tony's told him, Sen is just as deserving of death as Kuro, and Thayne is more than willing to deliver if given the chance.
Feanaro -*- Thayne's never met this wolf either, but he's always been a distant, silent threat. He wasn't on Devvyl's good list while Thayne spent his short time there, and he's still not on Hige's good side now. Perfectly good reason for Thayne.
Unicorns and cannonballs, Palaces and piers, Trumpets, towers, and tenemets, Wide oceans full of tears, Flag, rags, ferry boats, Scimitars and scarves, Every precious dream and vision Underneath the stars

Enter Thayne -- Hello, Hige! [Open End] Moving cautiously through the underbrush, the black and silver pup kept low to the ground and hid the red markings on his chest and throat as best he could. He wasn't sure, exactly, of his whereabouts. There were numerous faint and unfamiliar scents on the ground; occasionally, stronger ones would come on the breeze.
A small rodent skittered across the ground, inches from his nose. He shifted his weight abruptly and snapped at it, then gave chase when it squeaked and took off. It zigged and zagged across the leaf-strewn ground with Thayne close behind. He pounced, trying to catch it under his paws and paused after he landed, unsure of whether he had caught it. He lifted one paw and peeked; his prize had escaped.
With a huff, Thayne rose. His small stomach grumbled in disappointment.
~ ~ ~
Hige watched Soul enter the den, depositing the pup. His ears flattened and his eyes half lidded at his mother's attention and he nipped at her ear, then lowered his head to nuzzle it against her shoulder in return. Somehow he felt proud that Selia had taken notice to his change in size and stature. He still felt the need to expend some energy, though, and said to her in an almost eager voice. "I'm going to take a look around, mom, I can't really sleep right now. I'll be back soon."
Hige's tail twitched a bit behind him, almost shifting paw to paw. He wanted to run.
After getting a confirmation from her the tan wolf turned and headed back into the trees.
It wasn't very long before he picked up Thayne's scent, and padded int the direction of the pup, pausing a few feet away. He called out, tail swaying easily behind him. "... Hey, are you new around here?"
Thayne jumped away from Hige automatically, crouching when he landed. It was a reflex action more than anything. He looked up at the larger adolescent curiously, trying to determine if the new wolf meant him harm.
Well, if he had, he probably would have done something by now instead of asking for a name. It wouldn't hurt to answer back. "Aye... I wandered in. If I'm trespassin', me 'pologies," he replied in a young, accented voice. He lowered his ears and tucked his tail in a show of submission.
Wow, this pup was much more respectful than Hige had been when he first got here- which was little under a month ago. ^_^;;
The brown wolf lowered his own head to get a better scent of the newcomer. "As far as I know, this is open territory, minus the dens, of course..."
He flopped back onto his haunches and tilted his head to the side enough to scratch at his neck a bit. When he straightened back into a normal sitting posture he regaurded the pup with curious yellow eyes. Hige could easily remember how welcomed and reassured Selia's warm offer had made him feel... He wanted to do the same for someone else, in return.
"My name is Hige, you looking for something to eat?"
He hesitated to answer. He was hungry, but he didn't want to be indebted to Hige on the first meet. Thayne continued to mull his choices until his stomach, apparently displeased with his delaying, growled rather loudly.
"I could use somethin' t' eat," he finally replied, a bit sheepishly. He sat up a bit more. Hige's motives were still unknown to him, but the older male seemed friendly enough.
Growling stomachs, he definitely knew that feeling! Hige offered a small lopsided wolf grin ((I don't feel right not grinning. )) and stood again, turning his back to the pup and heading the way of the river. "Come on, this way then."
He was by no means, the best hunter in the forest, and he hadn't sucessfully tried his paw at fishing yet, but, maybe it could just be a learning experience for them both, right? Besides, he was sure it couldn't be that hard now that he was larger. He was growing up quite healthy in full thanks to Selia's love and care.
He kept his pace easy so that Thayne could keep up, keeping an ear out for him. He seemed to be paying it no mind for the time being, if he noticed at all that Thayne seemed tense.
He'd not heard an accent like that before, it had him curious...
Thayne followed Hige at a short distance, wondering distantly what the other wolf was going to find to eat. Foremost on his mind at the moment was Hige and what the other wolf was really like. Was he really being friendly or was there some other reason? Thayne would have liked to trust him, but... well, the pup was instinctively wary of others. He just couldn't help it. His mother had been the same way, so far as he remembered.
Thinking about Hige led him to think about other wolves in the area. He could smell others, faintly, but had no idea where they were beyond a ways away. He thought about asking Hige, but decided against it in the end. He was content to follow the older wolf to food and worry about the rest later, when his belly was full.
They arrived a bit further downstream than Soul and Aoiko, the moon was still holding in the sky.
Hige stepped out of the trees, keeping a listen out for any predators, and paused by the river side, waiting for Thayne to follow him out, offering a bit of a smirkish curl of his lips. "Hope you don't mind fish, kid."
Turning his eyes back to the river, Hige thought back to when he'd been watching Soul and Selia fish, and Aoiko...
He padded out into the water, watching with a look of concentration. A few moments later he lunged, jaws snapping into the cold waters and coming up- empty! Man!
He jumped back again and shook his head, freeing water from his muzzle. "Gah!! That's cold!!"
Thayne had never been fishing in his life, so he sat on the bank and watched Hige. He'd eaten fish, of course, but never caught it himself. He watched Hige snap at fish, diving and splashing around and coming up empty of a meal every time. The older male seemed to be having fun, though, even given the apparent chill of the waters.
After a few minutes of spectating, Thayne could stand it no longer. Hige wasn't having any luck catching anything, and he figured that he could do no worse, at the least. He waded out into a relatively shallow part of the waters and studied the fish that swam about his paws. The water was indeed cold, but not as cold as he had imagined. Then again, he was rather suited to the cold, with a thick coat and a good layer of insulating fat. He dove for a fish, imitating Hige, and missed it. With a growl, he marked the same fish and dove for it again. As he lunged, he stepped on a smooth rock and lost his footing. With an ungainly yelp, Thayne tumbled comically into the water.
Thayne's company began to chortle and laugh, watching the pup. He had to give him one thing, he was determined.
He ducked his head, ears rocking forward, then back to the sides again as his chuckles faded, amusement in his tone. "Boy, I guess we both kinda suck at this fishing thing, huh?"
He followed the fish that Thayne had been after, and on a whim made a dive for it, catching it by the tail in his jaws- surprisingly- and dragging it back to shore. He dropped it to the ground for Thayne, killing it quickly as he had seen Soul and Selia do to fish and rabbitts, then licked his chops clean and backed away towards the river again to catch one for himself.
He felt a chill down his spine, shaking it out of his fur again. It was a nice rush, catching his first fish, of course it had been partly with Thayne's help, driving the fish his way. "You never gave me a name, kid."
Thayne clambered out of the water and shook himself vigorously, looking rather like a spiky fluffball when he was still again because of the dampness in his fur. He sat back on his haunches and ripped at the fish-flesh with needle-sharp teeth, gulping it down. It was his first real meal in a couple of days.
After a couple bites, he eyed Hige. "Y'never asked mine, y'know," he replied smartly. " 's Thayne."
"Hmph. I guess you're right, Thayne. But, it's common courtesy to give a name in return for a name."
Hige smirked over at the pup mirthfully.
Noting how hungry Thayne seemed to be, Hige didn't hesitate in tossing a second caught, and stilled fish in his direction. The pup seemed to be needing it more than Hige did. A few moments later, Hige dragged a third to shore, for himself.
Soul had been right, the fish were already moving further downstream for the approaching winter. These weren't as large as he could remember them being before...
None the less, Hige settled down not too far from Thayne, tearing into his own meal. After a while he licked his chops clean and looked to Thayne.
"So, where are you from, kid?"
Common courtesy'll get y'killed, too, the pup thought, but kept it to himself. Hige had been quite friendly to him so far, and he didn't want to say anything stupid enough to jeopardize any future kindness. Thayne stripped the fish of the last meat on its bones and licked his chops, then reached out with a paw and dragged the second fish towards him.
"Eh..." He thought about the direction he'd come from to get to this territory. "M' home territory's northwest a'here." He stared down at the fish, his tail twitching once as he thought. When he spoke again, his accent was markedly thicker. " 's long way from 'ere."
Northwest! Right! .... Now why had Hige asked him that, it wasn't as though he was from the area himself, let alone knew what lay northeast of the Shoailin woods.
He simply finished cleaning his muzzle and shifted until he was sitting up, watching the pup with golden yellow eyes as Thayne spoke. He was curious, and otherwise bored, sad motive to go out of his way like this, but at least he had been genuinely moved to help.
"I'm not originally from around these parts either. Do you plan on staying here, or returning there...?"
Yes... Thayne, he must have a good reason for coming a 'long way from 'ere' ((not making fun, just quoting ^^ *luffs upon accent!*)) after all.
"Dunno," Thayne replied with his mouth half-full of fish. He swallowed before continuing: "Didn' really mean t' get 'ere 'tall. Wandered in, more like." He finished off the last of his fish and thought about his home. It'd been at least a couple of weeks since he'd been home; since he and his mother and one other member of the pack had had to flee...
" 'ow'd you get 'ere, then?" he asked bluntly before going about cleaning his paws.
"Pretty much the same way you did, kid,"
Hige wondered momentarily if it bothered Thayne, him calling him 'kid', but then dismissed the thought since Thayne had yet to protest it. His own memories of home were really too distant for him to recall, his memory a blurry blank before waking up in some strange forest, alone.
"I wandered in not very long ago." And met his foster mother. Hmmm.... Speaking of whom... Hige's ears twitched to attention, turning to the right, the rest of his head following suit. He could hear Selia's howl off in the not too far distance. He kept his eyes trained on the darkness of the woods a bit longer, then returned his easy going look to Thayne, discreetly looking him over. "You need a place to stay?"
Thayne looked apprehensive at the mention of somewhere to stay. He didn't want to impose on Hige anymore than he already had. Surely the older wolf had enough to do without looking after an orphan pup...
...but the chances of surviving on his own, especially if there were other wolves in the area, were smaller than if he went with Hige. It was likely that he'd meet another wolf that wouldn't be so friendly as the older male had been. Thayne looked at his paws and laid his ears back in submission. "If 's not t' much trouble... jus' for a couple o' days, at th' most..." Come With Us -- Join the Pack! [Open End] A resounding howl called into the dozing treeline. Hige was calling ahead for Thayne, announcing that he would be there shortly.
After a brief run-in with Devvyl and Selia, Hige had decided to bring back dinner for the pup.
As the brown male loped through the forest he thought about the conversation that he and his parents had had. Finally he arrived, dropping the rabbit at the entrance. "Yo! Thayne?"
Thayne poked his head out of the den cautiously. Seeing it was Hige, his lips split into a wolfish grin and he trotted out to stand at the entrance, his tail wagging once or twice. "Oi, Hige," he woofed softly. "Good t' see y' back. Been gone a while."
"Yeah, sorry," Hige lifted a paw and gave Thayne a good natured, little push. "It's a lot of work hunting down rabbits, their fast you know!"
Though his words were defensive there was pure amusement in Hige's tone, playing as though taking offense from Thayne's observation.
He shook his head and flopped onto his haunches with a 'fwump' sound. He winked. "Heh heh heh... Besides, I kind of got a chance to talk to Devvyl and Selia, I hadn't seen them for a while. You hungry?"
Thayne fell over when Hige pushed, more out of amusement than any loss of balance. He lay on his stomach with his head on his front paws, tail thumping the ground. "I could eat," he replied. "Devvyl and Selia... those're yer parents, yeah?"
Hige watched with a wolfish smirk as the pup "took a dive", flopping over. "Yeah, Selia took me in when I showed up here." Keh heh. XD
He gave the rabbit a nudge in Thayne's direction with his paw. He'd rather if Thayne ate up, since he was younger, Hige figured he needed it more than he himself did. If he decided to take him up on the offer then he'd need the strength... well, he'd need it regardless....
A bit of the amusement faded from Hige's eyes as he watched the pup, tail thumping softly against the ground. "Thayne, there's somethin' I need to ask you about."
Thayne scooped the rabbit towards him with one paw and tore into it with his needle puppy teeth. He eyed Hige as he chewed the flesh and swallowed. "Yeah?" This didn't sound so good; Hige's demeanor had changed. Had Thayne done something wrong to the older wolf?
Once again his demeanour had a slight shift, as though uncertain... of what was anyone's guess.
"Well, I think I mentioned that Devvyl and Selia had formed a pack... We'll be leaving in a few suns for the south, for new territory." At this point he looked down directly at Thayne, eye to eye, bending his head slightly forward to do so. "I've asked if it's alright for you to come, but it's your choice."
A pack? A new pack? And Hige wanted him to join? Thayne didn't know what to do. He'd wandered from his old home in search of... well, mostly in search of a new pack, he supposed. But it was so soon. He hadn't expected to find a new pack already. But then, he really hadn't expected to be alone when he found a pack in the first place.
"Where'll th' pack be goin'?" he asked, dodging the question slightly.
"I'm not positive," Hige drawled slightly, looking up towards the treetops thoughtfully. "they've kept mention of heading South, is all that I know for sure."
And at this point he redirected his gaze, like a hawk on a mouse.
"But if I know them, wherever it is, it'll be good for the whole of us."
He stared at Thayne, feeling hopeful, eager for the pup to reply with a yes. Hige was worried about what might happen if Thayne decided to stay behind. He'd already known what it felt like to travel alone, half starving and being spared only by a run in with one friendly two-legger. He felt a responsibility to see to it that Thayne had a place to belong, like pack-brothers should.
Perhaps he'd even stay behind himself if Thayne declined. He didn't want to have to part from his 'parents' but he wouldn't just abandon the pup either... What would his choice be?
"What do you think, Thayne?"
Thayne wasn't sure, still, of where he should go. Should he stay? The winter would be cold, prey would be scarce. Should he go? The pack life would be strange to adjust to again, without his family, and there would be movement... But he would be with Hige, who had come to be like a brother. And Devvyl and Selia, if they were as good as Hige said, would be good alphas to be under when he started pack life again.
After a moment's more hesitation, Thayne nodded. "I'll go wi' y' an' th' pack, Hige."
"..." A grin of relief came to Hige's muzzle, and his eyes as well. "Welcome to the pack, Thayne."
With that, Hige relaxed a bit, showing that he'd actually been a bit worried. The travel might be a bit difficult but with so many older wolves on the trip, Thayne would be fine. Devvyl, Selia, Elpha, Soul, himself, Aoiko now too, Yero, Whinn, Autumn... Yeah, it would be alright in the end...
He decided to let Thayne get back to eating for now, leaning over so that he could reach an itch on his neck with his back left paw.
Thayne felt his muscles relax considerably and let his tail whap the ground a few times. A warm feeling suffused his chest. He belonged somewhere. It was more gratifying than he had expected. He continued on his rabbit, unable to come up with anything else to say.
Hige waited for Thayne to finish, turning his head to look over his shoulder, he could pick up very faint smells of others, the scents were tangled a bit, but still dicernable. Devvyl was amongst them, though he couldn't say where.
Hm... he'd need to let Devvyl know that Thayne accepted the invitation.
...!
Smirk...
He stood a bit, but stayed low to the ground as though prepared to pounce on Thayne, suddenly feeling... devilish.
Thayne finished off the rabbit and licked his chops. He eyed Hige as the older wolf crouched, tensing as if to spring.
Hige decided to give Thayne a chance to make the first move, tail swishing across the ground behind him to assure Thayne that it was purely play.
Thayne sprang at Hige with a small, playful growl, his ears standing up and tail loose.
Hige surpressed a chortle- flattening his ears and taking the 'attack' head on. He gave Thayne's fur a gentle tug, where it grew thickest in preperation for the cold.
He lay on the ground flat now, at the mercy of his adversary. XD
Thayne pounced on Hige, then, jumping all over the other wolf with more playful growls and yip. His tongue lolled out of his mouth.
This time, Hige couldn't stop the amused laugh, rolling onto his side but being careful not to topple and roll onto Thayne.
"Tough guy, huh?" He smirked again, mrr'ing and yowling a bit, turning again and rolling to his feet, burying his nose against Thayne's belly and snuffing his fur. ~Well, let's see if you're a ticklish tough guy.~
Thayne was amused, but mostly by the sight of Hige's nose buried into his belly fur. Thayne was only ticklish in one spot...
And Hige found it, poking him right under the breastbone with his nose. Thayne yelped uncontrollably and scooted away.
Snickering with amusement, Hige persisted, taking a step for every few inches that Thayne scooched, not letting him escape.
"Hah! I gotcha, kid." Oh how smug he sounded, smug and highly amused, nudging the area again mercilessly for a bit. He'd keep it up for a little while, then think about letting him go...
Hige wasn't letting him get away! Thayne chuckled every time Hige's nose whuffled in his tickle-spot, scooting away and attempting his escape again every chance he got, but Hige's stride was longer than his own.
With one final snort Hige abandoned the spot, giving Thayne's left ear a tweek with his teeth, carefully. They'd managed to get a little to the side of their den, so now Hige flopped back onto his haunches and let out a laugh. He missed playing like this. It was good to hear Thayne laugh, too, he had seemed so somber when they'd first met!
Thinking about it now Hige was eager for he and Thayne to meet some of the other pack members too. He wanted to know what the others were like, beyond the brief encounters they'd had.Hello, New Family [Open End] Hige suddenly lifted his head from his paws as the wind shifted in he and Thayne's direction, carrying the scent of another wolf as it went.
"..." His ears rocked forward, twitching to catch the sounds of footsteps. The scent was familiar, very much so.
He got to his feet again and stood over Thayne, cautiously picking up the pup by the scruff of his neck. Shortly following his shift of position, Hige began at an easy trot towards Devvyl's direction.
Hey, another scent! This one smelled a lot younger than Devvyl, a pup? Hm, did that mean that Selia or Devvyl had found another pup to take into the pack?
His ears perked again as he caught Devvyl's yip and howl. It was good that they were starting to meet up more regularly now.
As he emerged from the trees into the clearing, Hige settled Thayne onto the ground between his own two front paws, not very far from the other two. He wuffed a greeting to Devvyl first, tail swishing to and fro in a lazy sway. "Hey, dad, I thought you might want to meet the new pack member."
Devvyl leaned down to give Raine a few licks, trying to dry her fur a bit. He looked up as Hige came into view, carrying a small male pup with red markings 'round his forelegs -- this must be Thayne.
Ah, another young pack member, eh? This must be the friend you told me about -- Thayne, wasn't it? He scooted Raine forward with his muzzle. This is Raine -- she'll be joining us as well.
A lopsided little wolfish smirk crossed his featured, then he let his golden eyes peer to Raine curiously.
He yipped a friendly hello to the young female, taking in her interesting markings with eager curiosity. "Well hello! Are you new here, as well?"
Raine blinked her large blue eyes in surprise as the wolf emerged from the brush. She felt her anxiety creeping back, but pushed it away as she heard the wolf speak and realized he was another friend of Devvyl. Not just a friend... A son?
"H-hello!" She greeted (the stammering seemed to be a subconcious trait), looking over the adolescent male as well, her nose twitching as she got acquainted with his scent. The blue pup scrambled on the floor a bit as she was nudged forward, giving a polite if not embarrassed grin to the adolescent and the other pup. Another pup, hmm? That would certainly be interesting.
Hige gave Thayne an encouraging nudge as well, then flopped to sit on his haunches. "That'd be him, alright. He agreed to come with us."
Heh heh... He was obviously pleased with that, relieved.
He wuffed a bit to her letting his tongue fall from the side of his mouth lazily. "I see, hey, nice to meet'cha, Raine. I'm Hige."
"Hige." She repeated his name, smiling. She wagged her tail relaxedly. "Nice to meet you, too!"
She paused for a moment, and then turned her head towards the other pup with wide, curious eyes. "Hi."
Hige chuckled a bit. He wondered about her coloring, he looked to Devvyl, giving Thayne and Raine a chance to socialize. "Hey, have you and mom had any luck getting in touch with any of the others yet...?"
Thayne looked up at the majestic red wolf and was filled with a sense of awe. The male's distinct scent filled his nostrils, and the unmistakable overlay of alpha registered in the black-and-red pup's brain. Respect for his new senior filled his chest. He put himself on his belly, ears laid back and tail tucked under. "Greetin's, alpha," he said formally, fully expecting this male to be like the ones in his old home -- strict with tradition and the ancient pack hierarchies. He wiggled closer to Devvyl and rolled onto his back, revealing his stomach and throat in a show of full submission.

Another New Beginning -- Hige + Thayne [Fin] Thayne was curled up outside the den -- the den that Hige and Loki had dug for themselves, not that long ago. Those two had been gone for some time in the freelands. They would be gone to another packland soon...
And Thayne had to decide whether he would be making the journey with him. He sighed heavily, a soft whine escaping his throat. The decision weighed heavy on his mind. How could he? How could he not?
Hige's scent wafted toward him on the breeze. He lifted his head and pricked his ears in the direction that the scent came from. His expression was a mix of sorrow, confusion and eagerness. He let out a short wuff in greeting to his big brother.
Hige smiled a bit, and came to stop, sitting at the mouth of the den. ((Btw, I've never asked but, would Thayne have slept in the den with them?))
"Hey..." He replied softly.
Thayne rose to sit and licked at the air towards Hige, his tail hitting the ground twice. "'ow were th' freel'nds?" he asked bluntly.
Hige snorted, his conversation with Faenaro had been more than frustrating. "The part with Feanaro was less than pleasant."
"Sad t' 'ear it. Anythin' go right, then?" he asked. He was curious about the pups -- man and wolf alike, heedless of the purpose man had filled in his past. No pup deserved death in the cold of winter.
Hige lowered his head a bit, then his lower end to sit, raising his head again like a bobber bird.
"Well, Balan did agree to come, and we have another packmember, Tsume... and it seems a pup might tag along with us as well, her name is Winter." His tail thumped the ground lightly a few times, tongue lolling out after his run back here. The others were waiting with the rest.
Thayne rubbed his eye with a paw. " 'ow many zat make?" he asked, more quietly. He was stalling, he knew that, but he had to come to a decision... big brother Hige, who had saved him from a slow starvation; or alpha Devvyl, whose kindness and fierce protection instilled a strong loyalty in Thayne.
"Seven if everyone accepts, and eight if you come along..." Hige said, watching the tricolored wolf he had come to think of as a younger brother... He could guess that this was a tough choice for Thayne. He had been traveling when Hige found him, now here he was asking him to uproot and move again... into a pack whose future was slightly stable, but slightly uncertain. He looked off to the side, diverting golden eyes with both guilt and uncertainty. "I don't want you to feel pressured, Thayne." He looked at him again finally.
"Nay, y' wouldn'," the young male replied. "But this ain' th' kinda thin' y' don' feel pressure 'bout, aye?" He sighed softly. "Th' new packgrounds?" he asked, truly wondering.
"Yeah, I guess so." Hige gave a small chuckle, almost humorless. "If you aren't ready yet, or if you'd rather stay, Thayne, we'll understand."
He bowed his head and took a deep breath. "Y' won' 'ave t'," he replied before looking up again. "I'm comin' wi' y'." He hadn't really settled in with the rest of the pack, and Hige and Loki were really his true family. He couldn't bear to live without them, not yet.
Hige stared dumbfounded for just a moment at his little brother. "... Eh- Really?" He shook his head to loose his surprise.
Thayne gave him a lopsided half-grin. He knew he'd made a big decision to go with Hige and Loki, but his whole life so far had been big decision. What did another matter? He rose to all fours, tail wagging slowly. "Aye, brother," he replied, his grin widening a little. "Y' might need me."
Hige looked thrilled, obviously, and barked his excitement, rearing up. ^__^ He wuffed, tail showing his approval. "We're about to head out... Selia and Devvyl already know that we planned to ask you."
"Sh--Should I go say g'bye?" Thayne wondered aloud, a perplexed puppy-like look on his face. He cocked his head to the side. "I mean..."
"I'm sure that they would appreciate it." Hige grinned a bit lopsidedly, flicking an ear out of habit.
Thayne nodded absently. "A'ight, then. I'll do tha' now... an' then we'll go, eh?" He flicked his ears toward Hige questioningly.
Hige wuffed again, barely audible, his agreement. "Yeah, do you need to eat before we head out?" He asked.
The younger male thought a moment before replying, "Aye, prob'ly ought t'."
"Alright," Hige gave a satisfied look this time, not that he was brushing aside Thayne's choice already, just that his spirits were too high to contain. He'd rope Tsume and Balan into helping to bring down something for their experimental pack to eat. They had pups with them after all, and they'd need the strength. "we'll go find something for the pack to eat before we go." He eyed Thayne, feeling a swell of pride, though he certainly understood why Thayne might feel anxious.
Thayne butted Hige's shoulder gently as he passed, headed toward Devvyl and Selia's den to say his farewells. "See y' in a bit," he remarked, then trotted off.
"In a bit..." Hige answered, looking over his shoulder to watch the black adolescent go. A small sense of urgency began to replace Hige's pride, and he went to inform the rest and start the hunting party, eager to get their group off to their home... what he hoped would be home... a stable home for all of them with room for their family. ~I hope for all of us that this will be the last move for a long, long time, Thayne...~ Trespassing -- Thayne + Sashta [Open End] Thayne was wandering through the freeland woods close to the territory boundary. He was both checking the territory lines and trying to clear his head. While the former was being accomplished, his head was still rather full of thoughts. Nonsensical ones, thoughts that did him no good. He growled softly to himself and concentrated harder on the territory lines. About most things, Sashta was wise. Boundaries, however, were not one of those many things mentioned. Luckily, she'd just barely managed to avoid crossing said 'territory lines'. If one were a young pup, naive about the world, she may have seemed dead.
But merely sleeping, she was. The black and white wolf had always been a light sleeper, however, like many of her kind. It wasn't at all surprising when her ears perked up and one eye creeped lazily open, glancing toward the source of the scent that suddenly drifted around her. A male. Black, mostly, from what she could see.
Thayne stopped a few feet away, studying the black and white female. He recalled her from somewhere, unsure for a moment where... Then he recalled her scent.
Sashta. Pleasure of recognition -- and perhaps something else? -- seeped through him. He wagged his tail slightly. "Y' know yer on territ'ry bound'ry, don' y'?" he said with some small amusement. With the realization of such a wolf's identity, she smiled slightly, pushing herself into a sitting position. Her front legs stretched forward with a yawn, baring her sharp teeth for just a few seconds. Ruffling her fur, she chuckled lightly. "I'm sorry, I'm afraid I didn't."
Now she had to wonder how many times she'd invaded pack territory. Likely to get her killed one of these days.
"Y' ought t' watch," he told her, "o' get y'self in trouble." He sat and scratched at his ear, trying to appear nonchalant. "What're y' doin' all th' way here? Thought y' were searchin' wi' Akamu fer 'is pack." Trouble? She wasn't sure, but she'd bet the penalty for invading anothers claimed 'territory' was more then just trouble. But she responded to this like she did any threat, warning, or comment that her life might be at risk. "If such happens, I'll at least get taken out by one of my own, hm?" If you had to go, she supposed that way was as good as any.
"I was, but I've been looking all day." That wary tone of hers was probably proof enough. "Unfortunately, I haven't been able to re-locate him either."
"I 'aven't seen 'im 'roun'," he said, awkwardly searching for things to say. He was failing miserably.
A light chuckle, and she nodded her head, having a bit of trouble finding the words herself. "Thayne, wasn't it?" Yawning, as if suddenly bored, she slid back on her stomach and rolled onto her side, her non-cloudy eye watching him intently. With an amused, but none the less curious tone she asked, "What would you have done if I crossed that line?"
"I couldn' tell y'," he admitted, canting his head slightly. "Depen's on m' mood, p'raps... an' if I'd actually known y' b'fore y' crossed th' line. As 'tis, I'd rather offer y' a place in th' pack..." A sudden boldness had crossed him and he was rather shocked he'd said that. "O' course, Hige's offered y' a place if y' need one," he said, trying to cover his slip.
"So he has." Clearly more amused then ever, she shifted her head a bit and glanced toward the nearest movement--a squirrel as it were. The furry brown thing darted off the second it noticed the wolfs stare. Today was not the day he'd be someones meal, thankyouverymuch.
But Sashta had no interest in eating the thing, just didn't want him running around where she could see. Such creatures annoyed her. They moved to fast, they were to small, and it was a strain trying to see them with only one functioning eye. "You know I couldn't,either way. There's too many I have to look after..."
"Aye," he replied. "I can un'rstan' r'spons'bil'ty." He didn't say she could bring her charges with her, but let her figure it out on her own. Belatedly, he remembered that she'd asked his name. He ducked his head. "An' aye, 'tis Thayne. Sashta, eh?"
If only. Sashta doubted anyone could understand the responsibility that was looking after Reicher. Even if she'd been aware there was a possible chance to take him with her, she still would've declined. The youth just didn't know his place, and no doubt he'd be killed by someone stronger then him within the first day. Perhaps two if he was really, really careful.
Not that Reicher had ever asked for her to stand as a sort of 'guardian', as it were, but she chose to do it on her own. It was the same with Whisper, in a way, but at least she had Kamali. She didn't need Sashta, but the black and white female just generally enjoyed her company. "Yes, that's right. What're you doing out here by yourself?"
"Patrollin' th' boundaries," he replied, "makin' sure no one's crossed th' lines an' invaded th' territ'ry." He grinned slightly, his tongue lolling out. "From 'ere t' th' shores -- fer th' pack." His grin faded slightly. "What're y' doin' out 'ere 'lone?" He didn't mean it rudely, just too used to speaking bluntly. No Akamu, no Reicher an' tha' otha teen female. Odd, he thought.
One thing Sashta couldn't tolerate was one being rude. However, it took quite a bit for her to consider something or someone as such. The only time that came to mind was that encounter with that currently nameless, white and brown female that had growled at her on sight. Psh.
Doing alone? Sashta was more often then not alone. Aside from when she ran into Reicher, Whisper, and for the time being Akamu. "I was looking for Akamu, then I was sleeping, and now I'm talking to yourself."
Thayne chuckled. "I see. ...'ave y' eaten?" he asked. He hadn't lately, himself, and he never missed a chance to hunt with a partner.
Especially not a lovely female.
"Not recently," came the reply mixed with a yawn. This place was quite dull for being so close to a pack. Being bored met being lazy, and Sashta was getting there.
"There's plenty o' prey 'bout 'ere -- not in pack territ'ry." He felt obligated to add the last part. While he felt all right letting her hunt just outside the territory, letting her hunt inside was another story.
Lazy, lazy. Sashta didn't seem the type, but she was. However, her stomach protested against such a thing, and eventually came out the victor. But if he was hinting at something, she obviously hadn't caught on. Lifting to her feet, she yawned faintly, edging into the more alert stage. "I see. I suppose I'll go see what I can find, then."
Thayne's own stomach growled in return, making him duck his head in slight embarrassment. "Min' if I join y'?"
"Mm..." For probably only the third time in her life, Sashta was clueless as to how to respond. It was true she might pause now and then, and seem to hesitate, but in reality she was just to busy thinking to answer right away. Not the case right then.
Not that she wouldn't enjoy the company, but she'd never hunted with someone before. Near them, sure, but not with them. "I suppose that'd be alright."
With Sashta's acceptance, the adult male trotted up near her, not too close so as to make her uncomfortable, and started off to the northeast. "Usually a lot o' rabbits tha' way. Migh' b' a wee deer o' two."
Rabbits? That seemed dull. Plus, Sashta hated hunting rabbits. They were too small, and too hard to see with only one eye considering they moved so fast. Deer were easier, usually, if she could find one big enough to see clearly but not big enough to the point where she couldn't take it down.
But outwardly, she seemed pleased with the idea of hunting the long-eared fuzzballs, keeping at a steady pace to his right. Just like him, though, she stayed a fair distance away. She was a bit cautious, for fear she might insult him in some way. Pack wolves. Couldn't understand them.
Shame Sashta didn't know how much it actually took to offend Thayne and his not-so-tender sensibilities, especially since there were no pack members about to be threatened. And he didn't see her as a threat to their livelihood anyhow.
He sensed her distance, though, and wondered at it. Shaking his head of the wondering thoughts, knowing he could do nothing about her reasons, he thought about the hunting they might find. The rabbits were plentiful enough, seeing as how they hadn't retreated too far from where the wolves stayed, but deer were sneaky in this part of the forest. Between the wolves's living space and the coarse seagrasses of the shore, the larger herbivores didn't put much faith in the area.
But maybe they'd get lucky anyway. With that thought in mind, he headed farther into the forest.
Many a time Sashta relied mostly on her hearing due to the fact her eyesight was so poor. Ears lifted intently, she continued along, past countless rabbits and birds that could've done fine had she been able to catch any.
She slowed as they reached a large clear-cut area. Unfortunately, no deer from what she could see, but one hell of a chubby rabbit. How was it possible for those things to get that fat?
