A common myth. The only difference between an HDTV is if it can do 720p or 1080p.
It reaches far beyond that. More often then not that higher price tag is there for a reason. Quality assurance, functions, etc. etc. Currently the top of the line HDTVs come from Samsung and Sony. There is a difference that will be explained later.
Now, when should you buy an HDTV? With the current trends it doesn't really matter. There will always be something coming along. It's recommended to upgrade every 2 to 3 years.
Differences between a 120 Hz supported HDTV and one that isn't. 120 Hz HDTVs support 24 FPS, which is movie standard. The refresh rate on the image, especially on LCDs, is also vastly improved. The next time you're at Best Buy or Circuit City look around for TVs with 120 Hz labeled on them or in the HDTV information.
A common occurrence in LCD HDTVs, especially when viewing water even through an HD Feed is blocky textures. The picture pixelates. It's not glaringly obvious until you notice it. However HDTVs with 120 Hz support smooth over this situation much cleaner giving you a sharper picture through HDMI or Component feed.
HDTVs with 120 Hz support tend to support USB 1.3 ports as well so PS3 owners you'll be in luck.
Now, I personally own a 40" Sony Bravia XBR4. It's the cheaper model between the XBR4 and XBR5 however the only difference between the two is a black gloss finish.
I also own a Samsung as well, but the XBR is my HDTV of choice.
My personal recommendations pretty much fall in line with the new Bravia, XBR line, and the new line of Samsungs rolling out with 120 Hz support. Check them out if you're interested.

That's a strong possibility. I wanna find something I've wanted all along.... Actually, at the time we bought it, that was an average price for a decent 1080p HDTV. Decent being the keyword, not top-notch like what he's talking about. Those kind of HDTV's get on up there in price. The bravia's alone are pretty expensive. Though when I get a job, I plan on saving up for one of the small models for my room. Like around 30+ inches or smaller if possible. Want one that will fit in my room, and I'll be closer to it so it doesn't need to be big. Oh, found out what the HDTV we have is....60Hz...damn...half as good as the 120Hz....looks like the barely noticable pixelations for me *sigh* I notice detail very easily even if I'm colorblind. Seeing the tiniest standing out pixel makes me go OCD. ....Somewhere I belong

ive seen really good quality HDTVs (like 37" or so) for £600 ($1200)
i think it has contrast of either 2500:1, 5000:1 or up to 10000:1
the one i want is a £600 one, Samsung LE37R87, and has 8,000:1 contrast. though i think it only does 768 resolutions.
