It was a black, brown-mottled creature of questionable origin...an animal with floppy ears and the pair of biggest golden eyes that Far had ever seen. It had just enough fluff to hint that it would probably be a massive, long-haired canine upon entering adult-hood, and Farlest really wasn't interested in having such a thing be an inhabitant in his household.
It sounded reasonable in premise. The elf could ignore the whining and the tail-wagging in exchange for the salvation of his pocketbook.
Arius, however, had completely different ideas.
The scent had the pup cradled to his chest, and the little boy had pitched a fit over the fact that his father could even consider putting the dog back where Ari had found it, and no amount of cajoling would convince him otherwise. The 'finding it a good home' tactic hadn't worked either. Arius was keeping the puppy, or so he said. Either they both stayed, or the scent wouldn't, he had declared huffily. And with grandiose intentions of running away from home that evening, the boy had pulled on his jacket, tucked the puppy underneath it, and set off down the street without further ado.
There was one hitch. Farlest was trailing along behind him, trying to reason with his young charge, despite the stubborn set to Ari's jaw. "C'mon, Ari...you know we can't keep a dog...we're on a budget for crying out loud, and no...we've already been through this, we're not feeding him your food. "
Being a parent was not all it was cracked up to be.

Having fled the apartment due to an influx of Angry Cat Who Had Had its Tail Trod On, Anastasia was wandering down the street and nursing a nasty scratch on her arm.
"You'd think I'd done it on purpose," she muttered sourly to herself, frowning and poking at the bandaged scratch. "Stupid cat. Dogs're much better. They...well. Bite."
Hmm. Maybe she could just avoid both, and call it even.
Wishing Evie had invested in goldfish rather than pets of the furry persuasion, Ana kept on walking until she bumped right into a boy with a coatful of puppy.
"Oh! Um. I'm sorry...and...er. Why is there a dog in your coat?"

Ari blinked, crimson eyes tearful (for effect mostly). "Because daddy won't let me keep it." He stated woefully, stroking the puppy's ears. The puppy, for his part, whined and craned out his neck to sniff at this new person, wiggling and making himself otherwise hard to hold onto, much to Ari's dismay.
Farlest, only steps behind, stopped, figuring that if he was going to insert himself in this conversation, he should probably do it now or forfeit all rights. "We can't keep a puppy." He wearily restated for what felt like the millionth time. "And you don't need one."
"No, but the puppy needs me." It seemed that he never tired of that come-back, pulling the furry creature closer. Ari smiled brightly at Anastasia. "I'm Ari, and this is Penneth." He shoved the puppy in her direction. "The spoilsport back there is Farlest. Who're you?"

Ana's resolution to stay away from all things furry was instantly forgotten.
"Won't let you keep him? But he's so cute," Ana said, tentatively patting the little dog's head. She smiled cheerfully at Ari and pulled an odd sort of curtsy, her hair falling over her face.
"I'm Anastasia. Nice to meet you."
She glanced up at Farlest, looking a bit reproving.
"Well, most of you," she added, petting the puppy's head again. "How could you not want a puppy?"

"Nice to meet you too!" Ari instantly brightened at the presence of this friendly (and sympathetic) new person who could be an aid to his cause. "I dun see why daddy won't let me keep him, he's not that big and he's so fluffy and snuggly!"
Pulling the canine out of his coat, he offered her the dog. "D'you want to hold him?" The puppy's tail was wagging enthusiastically, and he snuffled his nose at the girl and whined piteously with the promise of delighted doggy kisses.
Farlest sighed and rolled his eyes heavenward. Was everyone on this world against him? "It's not that I don't want the puppy...I'll admit he's adorable, but for pete's sake...He'll grow! I've had dogs before and I know how much they eat-"
"Not THAT much!" Ari cut him off and turned large eyes to his guardian, "Oh please please can't I keep him? Anastasia thinks we should!"

Ana gave a delighted squeak and took the puppy, cuddling it happily. Oh god, it was too cute for words.
"Everything grows," she said sensibly to Farlest. "Ari'll grow too, but that doesn't mean you're gonna get rid of him, are you?"

The puppy whuffled in contentment, nosing at the girl and showering effusive kisses of canine love under her chin, tail beating out a delighted tempo. Ari looked on with a pleased expression, knowing that this was just one more step towards his goal...and to add to it, he'd made a new friend. This night was going entirely his way.
Moving closer, he got near enough so he could pet the puppy too...and still send pleading gazes, not at all unlike the pet he wanted to keep, towards his guardian. "Yeah, you wouldn't get rid of me, would you? I eat more than Penneth does." He chimed.
The elf heaved a great sigh. "No, I'm not going to get rid of Ari, he's not precisely a pet, either." Pinching the bridge of his nose between thumb and forefinger, Farlest tried in vain to save himself from this inevitable end. "But you don't chew on furniture, piddle on the carpet, or grow into a big, smelly, furry dog, Ari."
Arius pouted, jutting out his lower lip and summoning up tears to his eyes again. "But daddyyyyyyyyyyy...he loves me!" Somehow, he was able to give himself the appearance of a six-year-old doing that. "And he needs a home. I needed a home too, and you came and got me." Not that Farlest had known at the time. "I bet Anastasia's parent would let her keep a pet. Do you have a pet?" He turned to his fellow scent to inquire.

"It'd be like taking a baby away from its parents," Ana chimed in, voice chiding. "He'd be so sad, and he's already lost his parents once before if you have him now, right? Poor puppy!"
She paused, really considering Arius's question.
"Evie has a cat that she found," she said slowly. "He's....a bit...er..."
Vicious and deranged, she thought silently.
"Interesting," she said aloud, hugging the puppy.

Farlest drooped a bit. He couldn't quite argue with that logic, though he was fairly sure that the puppy would get over it...as would Arius, but at the moment, the boy couldn't be convinced of either. "Well..." Hesitantly, he prepared to speak the words that would seal his fate, "If you don't take care of it, the puppy goes."
Arius wrinkled his nose, "Interesting?" He wanted more information about this cat...cats were something he hadn't had much contact with, and thus, he desired to know more.
A squeal of delight came from the little scent and he gave the puppy a kiss on the nose, hugging both it and Ana in the process. "Of course I'll take care of it!" He proclaimed, as though to do anything else would be completely unthinkable.

Beaming in triumph as though she'd won the dog for herself, Ana hugged Ari joyfully and bounced up and down in her excitement. Tactfully ignoring the boy's dubious interest in Evie's evil-tempered cat, she gave the puppy a quick kiss on the head and Arius a kiss on the cheek out of sheer exuberance.

Farlest sighed, and started to mumble to himself, grumbling as to how he really wasn't cut out to be a parent...to gullible and the like. Of course, he was lying through his teeth, as he really did love being Ari's 'father'. Oh...and now there were three in his little household.
Ari giggled delightedly, hugging Ana as well and nearly squishing the puppy between them, which whined piteously and licked their chins as his tail beat out a rapid tempo...happy even though he didn't know why. Arius couldn't have been more delighted. "Thank youuuuuuuuuu~!"
Whether he was addressing Far, Ana, or both...was entirely uncertain.
