Hayagriva stalked through the forest, head low and tail lashing. Kalona. Why had his mother never told him the truth about them? And why had she bred with his father if kalonas were monsters? As a foal he supposed he had been less threatening even with his pointed tail. That was probably why no one ever made much of a deal about it. It had been different, yes, but a foal wasn't dangerous. Now that he was full grown, he was dangerous.

Or so the soquili he met seemed to think.

If he met one more that took one look at his tail and assumed that he was going to hurt them... Hayagriva's gray eyes narrowed. The worst part was that the more angry he got at them the more justified they'd feel in their fears.

The spotted stallion wandered around aimlessly. Even after all the time he spent in the meadow or by the river, he had yet to make very many friends. It wasn't like Spotty was shy or quiet, he just never seemed to be able to keep others interested in him. He had quickly found out that some mares would much rather hang out with stallions that weren't so 'plain'. This didn't have anything to do with color, for Spotty's coat was anything but plain but with species rather. Spotty had neither wings or a horn or anything different about him for that matter.

Sighing, Spotty shook his head back and forth. Worrying about appearance wasn't usual for the stallion. "When did I get so vain...?" he wondered silently. Surely there were horses out there that didn't care about looks. Spotty would just have to find them.

Haya continued his onwards march, ears pricking when he heard movement. As usual he steered towards it but this time with somewhat less friendly intentions than usual. He would see what sort of soquili he'd meet. Maybe it would be a kalona and he could see for himself the horror that half his blood had originated from.

He pushed through the bushes and into the open. It was another stallion, a brightly colored one. Hayagriva puffed his chest out proudly and waved his tail once over his head. There was no way the other stallion could have missed that. If he had something to say about his parentage he'd better get it over with quickly.

Spotty was torn out of his thoughts by a sound that seemed to come out of nowhere. It was a stallion but he looked quite different than Spotty. After a double-take, Spotty noticed that his tail was quite different. From what he could tell it wasn't that of a unicorn and it was, in fact, the only thing different about the other stallion. But this tail seemed to be in a somewhat defensive position at the moment.

This stallion didn't look too friendly. Perhaps Spotty had just caught him at a bad time. Taking that chance, the brightly colored stallion began to cautiously make his way over to where he was standing. In his head Spotty was still trying to figure out the stallion's species.

Hayagriva could see the gears turning in the other stallion's head. Probably deciding whether to run away or just insult him. He let his tail fall back behind him but it still lashed with an irritated urgency.

"Well?" he demanded when the other stallion said nothing. "What do you want?" If he was a pleasant soquili now would be his chance to prove it. If he was unpleasant, though, today Hayagriva didn't feel like making the efforts to be pleasant back.

Spotty was a little surprised by what came out of the other stallion's mouth. He had only ever met good tempered horses and was a bit unsure of how to respond. Why was he getting defensive? Spotty decided it would be a good idea to make conversation but he could only think about the stallion's tail. It was...cool.

Getting his attention off the other's tail, Spotty decided a proper greeting was in order. "Well hello," he said trying to show the stallion he wasn't an enemy, "I'm Spotty Paws."

Hayagriva gave a snort at the other stallion's words, still not looking any more friendly. "My name is Hayagriva." He had noticed Spotty Paws' eyes watching his tail and let it flick out wider past his body to keep it visible. If he had something to say then he'd say it soon enough... or he would if he had any bravery. The ones that annoyed Hayagriva even more than the ones that remarked about his parentage were the ones that didn't. He'd rather have someone upfront with their misgivings than thinking them in secret behind his back.

Now that the greetings were done Spotty wasn't sure what to say next. Spotty could see that Hayagriva was flicking his pointed tail around in the air. Spotty wouldn't want to upset Hayagriva with questions. But he wasn't ever very good at keeping quiet and liked to speak his mind. "I was wondering about your tail," he said finally, in order to break the tension. "I haven't seen one like it before."

The stallion had always wished that he had something unique about him. Sometimes he even envied those who weren't just normal like him. "Were your parents of a different species?" Spotty asked. A thought suddenly came to the stallion. He had heard of Kalona Soquili and that they were almost dragon-like; thought Spotty had never met one.

Haya knew it. Right on cue, Spotty Paws was asking about his heritage. Hayagriva's ears flicked back as he watched Spotty Paws with narrowed eyes. There was no point in trying to hide it now.

"Yeah," he said flatly with little emotion. "My dad was a kalona. He had a tail like this." He almost hoped that it would scare the other stallion away at this point. If he ran away then he wouldn't stand around speculating about Haya's dietary habits, at least.

So Hayagriva was part Kalona. From this Spotty could guess that a full blown Kalona must look different, he had heard they had wings. From the way he was acting, Spotty got the feeling that Hayagriva wasn't too happy about his being half-kalona. The colorful stallion wasn't sure what to do next. It appeared as though Hayagriva expected him to do something.

"I've never met a Kalona before," he said truthfully.

Haya's tail lashing stirred for a moment. The other stallion hadn't gone on to mention something traumatic that been done to him by a kalona or some horrible myth. He didn't even seem nervous about Haya's statement. He looked a little curious, if anything.

Haya snorted and tossed his head, focusing back in on Spotty Paws when he was finished. He still wasn't looking cheerful but some of the hostility had left his bearing. "I've never met a kalona either." No, he'd only encountered what everyone thought they knew about them.

The stallion was a little confused by Haya's last statement. "So you've never met your father?" Spotty questioned curiously. This was a subject he could sympathize with; Spotty had never met either of his parents before. Besides that, he had only seen his sister when they were younger.

Haya was starting to look less defensive toward Spotty. The expression about first impressions was a good rule to live by. Spotty even began to wonder if they could be friends. It was hard to admit, but the stallion knew he didn't have many friends.

Hayagriva bristled again but this time it wasn't directed at Spotty Paws. He had never met his father, seen his father, or even gotten a really good description off his mother. He didn't know if he'd even be able to recognize his father if he met him.

"I've never met him" he allowed himself to admit to this stranger. "But my mother would have bred with him if he had been chewing her ears off!"

Listening to Haya, Spotty started imagining a Kalona in head. He was starting to understand Hayagriva a bit more. The two of them had more in common than he had first thought. "I've never really met any of my family" he said, finally able to have a conversation with the other stallion. "I do have a sister, but I haven't seen her since I was a foal."

Hayagriva still couldn't quite bring himself to trust this stranger. He watched him mistrustfully as he processed the new piece of information. "... How do you never meet any of your family? Someone had to have raised you." He couldn't imagine both parents completely abandoning a foal. One might have misgivings, yes, but for both to change their mind about having children suddenly was beyond uncaring into just stupidity and wretchedness.
