Summer Rain 07

Jina's red tongue lapped up the cool water as Ewan and her made a small stop on their trek. The hot summer sun was becoming unbearable for Jina, and the cool water hit the spot. It was times like these when she hated her dark coat, but she learned to cope. Both water, and shade were the only cures, and if she had one, she'd be fine for a few hours.

She sighed and sat up. "That hit the spot." She looked over to her brother, smiling lightly.

"Okay now Jin?" He asked, smiling, while using her even-shorter nickname he used for her. During the couple of weeks this journey had taken Ewan had grown quite fond of his sister. He didn't mind stopping more often so that she could drink or rest a while - with his white base coat, he could have stopped left often, but the idea of her getting heatstroke was worrying.

She nodded, and joined her brother. "I'm ready." she gave him a smile. She felt bad for making him stop so periodically, but she could only push herself so far.
"Thanks for waiting Ewan " She said as they began to move again.

She looked down to her paws as they walked. She watched the grass as it fell upon her steps. A question was itching in her mind. She only had a far of memory. What was her mother like now?

"Hey Ewan..." she started, her crimson eyes now looking up to him. "What's mom like?"

"She's...a little odd, but in a nice way." He pondered how to answer as they walked along at a comfortable pace. They'd get there, so he didn't worry about stopping sometimes. Their mother, hmm -

"Still sends up prayers for her kills, thanking them since their life sustains hers and tries to take the weakest members of a herd to help it grow stronger. Very compassionate, superstitious, a wanderer...even though everyone's split up half the time, she's always thinking of us."

She laughed lightly. "I remember her teaching me that when she took me hunting once." She said as she took a trip down memory lane. She missed her cub days when her family was all together. Soon, she would be back with her family. Even if it did have a few new members that she hadn't yet met.

She looked back to Ewan. "Thanks again for finding me." Her bond with her half brother was increasing by the moment. All because they were traveling together to get back to their mother.

"Any time. When we're all split up wandering again, I'll have to find you again and again, so it was good practice!" He joked, used to being thanked by now. Besides, he was grateful himself, to have found her. Ewan would make sure he saw his big sister often enough after all this.

"One thing I love about mum is that she doesn't mind that I'm not that spiritual like she is. Have a friend whose father's always angry he doesn't worship some god...How about you sis? What do you believe in?"

She laughed at his comment. "Well, I'll always be by a shady spot or water." She gave him hints. Even though he found her now, it was a big world. Though, they didn't know what each other looked like, so that helped also.

She had to think about his question. "I haven't really thought about it much. I mean, I've had a run in with a god, but..." she shrugged, "I don't know. He seemed like a normal lion to me. Didn't seem like there was anything special about him except for his size and his wings."

He contemplated her words, the struck upon a related but much less cheerful topic.

"My father was supposed to be a god...mother now thinks he may have been the one to cast curses on her, made her forget..." Ewan's ears flicked back. He'd never really cared who his father was, because Rahima had never been able to remember anything beyond a name and an idea of wings. His mother and brother and Asherah had been all the family he'd ever wanted. But this new theory...

Was it kind of his fault Jina had been lost?

Her smile faded, ears falling back against her head. "I'm sorry.."

Now that she thought about it, she didn't think having a god for a father would be great. One night stay, then back to his duties as a god. Not knowing his father must have hurt. Jina didn't know what she'd do if she didn't know hers.

"Ah, it's okay." So long as Jina didn't hate him for it. So long as he never met the twisted, selfish creature who may have sired him and stolen their mother's memories. Then it was fine. He'd had a good cubhood, with just his mother. It was just this new theory that worried at him.

"Not long now until we reach the meeting place." He switched to the more pleasant notion of seeing Rahima soon, and offered a smile. Weaker than a real one, but still.

A wide smile came across her maw and her ears flicked forward. Her tail started to wag behind her. She tried to act cool, but she was too excited! She was going to see her mother. Someone she hasn't seen in years! "Where are we meeting her?" she asked, trying to keep the conversation going.

"She should be waiting by Tail Rock. It's part of an outcropping, but it's sort of upright with a hooked end. Kind of like a flopped tail tuft. It's not far from here." Ewan explained, happy to escape into the subject. He narrowed his blue eyes at the horizon.

"It's that darker smudge on the sky line. Should be there within the hour!"

She ran ahead a few yards, and looked back to him. "That thing?" She said as she waited for him to catch up. She squinted a little and smiled, "Heh, it does look like a tail." she smiled, her tail wagging faster. Only a little further.

"Yes, that's it. Hopefully she'll be there today - else it'll be tomorrow or the day after, since we allowed each other traveling time." He was sure Rahima would be there. Mum had been cub-heavy but not too near her time yet. She'd still be reasonably spry and able to travel around her usual speed. So Ewan figured they'd meet soon.

"One day we'll do the same, yeah? Agree to meet up after we split up again."

She nodded. "I understand." She said as she walked with Ewan again once he caught up. She started to think of what she would say to Rahima when they met up again. She had so much to tell her, but didn't know how she would be able to.

She looked back up to her brother and smiled. "Of corse." She smiled.

Split up...there was something in the back of her mind that she couldn't shake. She knew there was something wrong, but she couldn't put her paw on it.
