Usually Castellan found nothing of interest above the water's surface. The sun was too bright during the day, and the stars changed too slowly for him to find them intriguing. The land was just surrounded by too much shallow water to approach, he could only peer from a distance or risk beaching, or being noticed by the two leggers and their nets and pointy-strings.

Well, until the day he found that unusual rocky bay. The seahorse mer was exploring along the edge of his own personal boundaries when he noticed an unusual rocky trench, and naturally he had to explore and see where it lead. He practically wiggled with excitement as he realized the water was deep enough to take him right up to the shore, where the rocky shelf had prevented a sandy slope from forming like along the rest of the coastline.

Castellan was so excited when he actually put his nose on dry, land ground that he just had to duck back under the water, and happily curl his tail around a rock while he calmed down a bit. While he eagerly thought up how to tell his anglerfish companion about his adventure, there was no sign of his presence aside from the wet smear from his muzzle on the rock.

Vytali picked his way across the rocky terrain slowly, looking as though he hadn't a care in the world. His braided tail dragged on the ground behind him, leaving one to wonder how it was that it didn't get caught. Making his way up to the water's edge, he hardly even noticed the slight wet smudge as he lowered his head to drink. Aside from his eyes, searching beneath the surface to make sure there was no danger, he was relaxed, stretching his wings out at his sides.

Lifting his muzzle, a few drops of water clung to his lips, until he shook his head and sent them flying. Snorting, the young stallion looked down at his own reflection, pleased by what he saw--it wasn't a matter of being good looking or not, but instead his own interest in seeing how his body had grown into itself. It wasn't that it had happened overnight, but rather that he was only now noticing the changes, since they'd happened somewhat gradually. Stamping his hoof, Vytali thought about where he wanted to go next--at some point soon, he wanted to see his siblings again, as well as his parents. As he debated his next course of action, he continued to stare, somewhat pensively, down into the water, although he really wasn't paying much attention to the image before him anymore.

Castellan was just about to unwind his tail and maybe touch dry land again, but he quickly realized there was another stallion right there above the water. How it would have gotten there, he had no idea. He slowly uncurled and drifted towards the surface when he realized the other didn't appear to see him. The mer floated right up so his muzzle was inches from the water's surface, puzzling all the while about how this stallion came to be up there, looking down at the water.

Without thinking the situation through entirely, Castellan poked his head right out of the water, paused, and then asked with a completely perplexed expression, "What's wrong with your tail?"

Vytali's eyes widened when he was jolted back into the present by the sudden appearance of Castellan--he'd been so distracted that he hadn't even seen the other when he'd been sitting mere inches below the surface. For the usually composed young male, it was a telling sign of just how surprised he was, that he'd revealed such an open, shocked expression.

Sitting back onto his haunches, hard, Vytali could only goggle at Castellan. "My...tail?" Mind practically whirring as he sorted himself out, Vytali stamped one of his fore-hooves, getting back up and collecting himself. "There's nothing wrong with my tail--it's supposed to be like this." If he was somewhat taken aback, it didn't show itself in his slightly amused tone.

Puzzled, he discerned that the other was, apparently, completely at home in the water--this was something Vytali had never heard of, let alone seen before. Seeing as the other youth had made no move towards aggression, Vytali took a tentative step back towards the water's edge, extending his nose politely. "Isn't it cold, being completely underwater like that?" Aside from the vaguest hint of curiosity in his words, his expression was fairly bland, although not impolitely so.

Castellan's face broke out into a wide grin. "It's supposed to be all split up and bent funny? It looks painful to me." Ignoring the other's shock, the merstallion nosed forward and shook his mane out of his eyes. It was odd how air didn't suspend the delicate strands of hair like the water did, but at least once it was out of one's face it stayed out of one's face.

He continued to talk at the other stallion, both answering and throwing out more questions to appease his own curiousity. "I'm not cold at all, the water is warmer than the air. Why are you out there in the air? And you're not wet at all, just like the rocks!" He flicked his tail and almost wiggled with delight, this was certainly an interesting stallion to be talking to.
