I watched this a while ago, and incurred a big library fine for forgetting to return it on time. This has colored my good opinion of this movie, as I do not feel it was worth half of twelve dollars without owning it.
The Japanese mythology wasn't explicitly explained during the film, so anyone who's not familiar with it will be lost. Including me. The bathhouse setting and all the mythical inhabitants seem just thrown together and the movie makes little sense.
A little enlightenment from anyone on this one would be appreciated.

Gasp, gasp. Personally, it makes sense to me, in my twisted brain, though I could not explain it in any way or form. I just like lookign at the pretty moving pictures! I love Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki. All of the work is amazingly beautiful and surreal.

ok, i just now finished watching this one,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,WOW! Alice in Wonderland meets the NeverEnding Story meets someone who had some really expensive drugs................ WOW! what an "interesting" little movie. i do not believe this one can be described in words coherent to some one not already on drugs.................. that being said, i still found it quite captivating, and still would have to recommend watching it. really. it is beautiful and it is surreal. confused

I love this movie, too! Personally, I like anything Miyazaki makes. It was beautifully done.
I'm not sure about the mythology bit of it, though. I has a theor about all of it a long time ago, but it seems to be lost in the deepest abysses of my mind. O_O

Tha main character's name was Chihiro, then she lost her name and became San.
It was confusing for me at first too. However, I liked the art and music from the film, so I didn't care either way.
I think the bathhouses and demons are part of some fantastical world (obviously, I'm just regurgetating the info) I suppose that it must have something to do with Japanese culture. I think in the olden days, they had these huge bathhouses for people to wash in and demons were part of folklore and the director wanted to include them (as spirits)
I hope that helps. [:

I really loved Spirited Away, which is why I own it. I don't think you really have to understand the mythology of it to enjoy the movie, as is the case with most miyazaki movies. They are just fun and light, like Kiki's Delivery Service or My Neighbor Totoro. Now a movie like Gozu on the other hand, requires some serious reading up, or else you'll be lost.
