Quote:
Gallu sniffed and paced just outside the barrier-magic that kept him apart from his quarry. There was something going on. It could feel it; it was waiting for it - it might be the best chance to get at it's prey. Someone had used magic, someone that wasn't supposed to - and it weakened the barriers a bit; at the same time, the positive magic was being used (presumably by Edict to show the Tales in her "care" what was going on with their counterparts) and that too weakened the boundaries for the six-eyed nightmare beast lurking in the 'between.

Crows made from shadows whirled round the Tales kept in the Wizard's prison, their cries shrill and grating all at once. The dark-skinned Tale that had sent them to harry his peers could not have known that it was his use of magic that would weaken the barriers enough to allow It in. Gallu roared and dug it's claws into the shimmering barrier magic, ripping at it just as the shadow-born birds ripped at the dimensional magic; tearing through the barrier much in the same way as the birds were now tearing at the Tale's hair and clothes.

It was then that the wizard noticed the dark-skinned child had stepped away, had done something that was jeapordizing his experiment. "Rotten little creature!" The old man snarled and muttered archaic-sounding words in a low, hissing tone; a twist of gnarled, arthritic fingers and Ayden would find himself bound by invisible bonds and slammed into the cold granite of the Tower. "Stay there until I need you!" The mage then turned his attention to his spell - Edict would have to handle the beast, there was no time for him to waste now!

The spell was almost done, almost ready: Runes that had been drawn in blood glowed eeriely on the floor and walls; each symbol making slow revolutions and changing as the magic wove together and pulsed with the beating of the old man's wizened heart - a heart that it was indeed bound to. Edict would learn soon enough that she was not to return with the Wizard; he had enough essence and power left in himself to work the magic gate for one, but not both. It had been the Wizard's blood, mixed with the essences of the Tales that was used to unlock and begin the ancient magic, and it would be the same that would end it.

He returned to his spell, chanting the words for the next part even as the barriers were torn open by the Gallu. They could all become shields! It didn't matter - he was going home!

A single tear rolled down Elana's cheek from her wide eyes; she was still held in the Wizard's thrall, but it was hurting her to see the others being hurt - to see her sibling slammed back into granite, held as tightly as she herself was. A crack formed in the spell woven around her and for a brief moment she was in controll of herself once again; she knew what she must do.

Elana gathered her energy and cast one last, desperate spell of her own: one that would - she hoped - reach those Tales that had not yet been entangled or drawn into this dark place...to see if one of them might be able to help. If nothing else, one of them might be able to get through to the raging beast that had battered it's way in before it was too late.

OOC NOTE: At this point, if anyone that was not originally signed up in the MP would like to have their Tale drawn into it for SPECIFIC PLOT REASONS (Ie, you would like to have your Tale's memory wiped, have them lose a limb, etc) PLEASE CONTACT THE MULE TO DISCUSS. :3

Also...at this point, the threads are about to become one - please post any and all replies to the appropriately marked thread~

To reiterate: Both groups are now able to see/interact with each other. Khia has become a huge, creepy monster that can/will attack anything in it's way. There are creepy effin' crows that want to harass your Tales flying around and...a crazy old Wizard is more than happy to use all the kids as meat!shields. :3

No sooner had Donny banged on the invisible window and yelled Elena's name did it suddenly disappear, only to be replaced with what seemed to be the real thing. He felt ridiculously self-conscious, with his fist in the air and a name on his lips. He shut his mouth quickly and his hand snapped down to his side, trying to act nonchalant. His embarrassment was short-lived, of course, since there were crows coming for him and his friends as well as some kind of black.. scary.. what the heck was that thing?!

This looked all sorts of bad for them. He looked back at the Tales he was trying to watch over, before taking a defensive stance in front of them. His trident rang as he clanged it in front of himself and held it with both hands.

"Whatever you do, keep behind me. You could get really hurt if you don't." He whispered to Chai and Khalindra.

The echoes of Donny's cry rang out across what Elena was viewing as castle grounds. The familiarity of that voice calling her name caused the girl to whip her head around, precipitating yet another blinding headache and intense wave of dizziness. Closing her eyes briefly in an attempt to stop the disorientation, Elena opened them, smiling brightly. "Donny!" she called out in greeting, privately wondering and worrying about how he - and the only now noticed others - had gotten here.

Before she could move towards him, however, he struck his trident on the ground and held it in a defensive position. What...? Elena turned again, this time more slowly and saw descending specks of black quickly resolve themselves into crows and.....well, that can't be good. Mentally deciding to blame Tybalt for all that had gone wrong, the girl shuffled an anxious step sideways towards Donny and hopefully refuge from whatever the Very Large Thing lurking about dangerously was.

Donny was glad to see that he was really there, because Elena saw him too. At least this wasn't some illusion again. When she turned to notice the danger they were about to face, and took a step towards him, he tried to whisper yell in her direction, hoping he could hear her.

"Don't make any sudden moves. Try to come back here without them noticing." He didn't know if Tybalt was fond enough of Elena to try and protect the girl from harm, but he did know his feathered friend was up for a fight if it came down to it, and he was ready and willing to stand beside him. His primary concern for the moment, however, was making sure his friends were all safe. If he could do something to keep them from harm, he would.

He felt surges of courage that he really didn't know he had, possibly because he had never felt them before. They felt alien, but at the same time a vague familiarity came with them, as if he had been fighting and protecting for a very long time. He took a few steps forward, slowly, to try and reach Tybalt as well as giving Elena less of a chance to catch somethings attention as she walked towards him.

A sudden, sinking realization hit him. Where was Armel?! Why was his friend not beside him to fight as well? He looked around, and his eyes narrowed in worry. Either he was safe away from this place, or.. wherever his friend was, Donny hoped that he was okay.

The world suddenly broke, releasing a wave of malevolent crows, the barrier between themselves and their fellow Tales--and Tybalt's dagger. Momentum carried him back and down, and he didn't have time or balance enough to right himself before he fell flat on his back.

A group of crows, thinking him easy prey, took that opportunity to try their luck with him. They regretted it, cawing, wheeling, and in some cases dying as Tybalt struck up and out with hardly a thought and less regrets. He fought his way to his feet, shaking his head to clear it of the muzziness the sudden fall had brought.

A glitter too bright for this dark place caught his eye, and he instinctively turned to look. He found himself immensely glad he had and called over the shrieking of the crows, "Donny? Not that I'm complainin', mind, but how th' hell'd ye get here?"
PostPosted: Thu Oct 11, 2007 1:50 pm

Donny laughed bitterly as Tybalt yelled the question at him, and had to stop to skewer a crow on the talons of his trident before answering. He tried to shake it off as he called back. "I haven't got a clue. In fact I'm much more clueless about anything that's going on than I'd care to admit, and I hate it. You couldn't possibly-" His conversation had to pause as a crow screeched while flying down towards him, alerting Donny to his presence and allowing the boy a free second to swivel the trident in a full circle and send it jamming up into the crow's throat. "-fill me in on anything, could you?" He finished, as he turned the trident and let the carcass slide off it.

The sound of several angry crows neared; it seemed many of them were reacting exactly as Donny hoped. They were ganging up on the two, hoping to overpower the ones that were fighting back. Donny smiled grimly and readied himself.

"Some party, eh?" He turned to look at Tybalt for a second to say.

"Jeez! What the..." Sylvester staggered to his feet and immediately dodged to one side, holding a hand up to ward off the wounded crow veering past his head. There were a bunch more people in the room now all of a sudden, including MiniPope and Chai and the sparkly kid with the wings he had met half a lifetime ago, in a new, larger size. The drippy crow had been... redirected by one of the two brandishing weapons, and maybe, Sylvester thought, it would be wise to make himself less of a target again.

He ducked back to a crouch and started to brush the hair out of his eyes, only to see that his fingers were spotted with crow blood. He rubbed his thumb through it, searching for the feeling most blood usually awoke in him, but there was nothing. Very uncool.

Elena watched Tybalt and Donny through narrowed eyes, fingers itching for her bow. This was a perfect opportunity for her to not only show off, but also to be more useful in the situation. With an internal sigh, Elena let off watching the sky and instead turned to face the other Tales, looking them all over. Well, failing a bow suddenly materializing, she'd be useful in another way.

"Well? Don't just sit there," she barked out, setting one hand firmly on her hip while waving the other about, less theatrically than she normally would have. "Donny, Tybalt, keep the crows distracted. Everyone else, slowly gather together. If you can fight, stay on the outside of the group to protect those who can't," the girl ordered, setting herself to trying to chivvy the small children into an area between the two defending Tales.

The crows loosed by the nightmare Tale bled scarlet and pitch when wounded - shadows and blood; they were real enough to bleed, but not so real that the blood was...blood, if that made sense. Magic did strange things in this place inbetween.

As Donny and Tybalt were actually fighting back, destroying some of their number, the black beasts whirled and turned on them; focusing their attack where they felt it was most needed. That's not to say that there weren't crows zooming down, wings a black-blur going after those that were too weak to defend themselves. Elena would find herself with two or three of the wretched magic-born creatures clawing and cawing at her starry hair and her elegant clothes.

Sylvester's giraffe-tennae were another target for them, as were Diae's goggles (which they ripped and clawed at because they believed - wrongly - that the child's eyes were hidden behind the protective lenses) among other things.

Newly arrived Tales - blinking and bleary eyed, unsure of what was happening - were likely targets. The others had somewhat banded together in a protective unit...but the ones brought by Elana's final, desperate calling had no such preparation, no warning as to what they were about to find themselves face-to-face with...

Gallu sniffed at the air, growling -- these flying things, these children...all of them were in it's way! It's prey was "hidden" away from it and those between it and the Wizard were very likely to become targets of the slavering, multi-eyed beast's wicked jaws and razor-sharp claws.

Some of the crows had the misfortune to single out the Gallu for attack; they met with a quick but painful fate under tooth and fang. Distractions...but not enough! The Tales - newcomers as well as those that had been trapped within this Betwixt and Between magic - would soon find themselves under the Otherworldly monster's blood-hungry gaze.

It was the sounds of shouting, things shattering and the smell of blood that seemed to snap Jiro out of whatever daze he had fallen into. His head was throbbing but he ignored it as best as he could as he tried to push himself to his feet. What... happened? One moment, he had been healing someone, right? After that, he couldn't quite recall... But things had definitely taken a more involved turn into the more magically insane.

Everything was dark now. The flapping noise seemed to come from birds? Even as he lifted his groggy gaze heavenward to figure out what kind they were, he had difficulty focusing and sighed, shook his head and lowered it. no use. Everything was just going to spin around. It took a couple of tries to get his hands under him and to get the strength to get to his own feet, taking some time to dust himself off. Odd fragments of what seemed like colored glass fell off his kimono and hit the ground. Damn, he had a headache. But the scent of blood made him turn around to try to pinpoint where it was coming from. There were other Tales here... it took a second for him to recognize the face of tybalt and Donny. Though he was not close to either, he recalled them from their younger forms well enough to know them in their current.

And they were fighting the birds. So many crows were flying about. if one hadn't noticed him getting up and coming to attack him, he probably would have just stood there stupidly. But his body recognized danger and he shifted a bit, though his demonic wing got slashed by a talon from the bird. Now that got his mind to focus. His eyes narrowed as he felt in his hair for a chopstick.. damn it, he had spares! Where were they?!

He didn't relax until he felt the familiar smoothness of them against his fingertips. There.. now he could defend himself. Not like he had any other weapons on him currently.. gotta made do. But he would have to ask to find out what was going on...however, until that time, he saw that there were some Tales that were getting attacked. He may not know them or anything but he wouldn't let those who couldn't defend themselves get hurt. Did he know if they could fight or not? No, but now wasn't the time for thinking about that. For him, he had to find out what he had missed.. and obviously it was a lot.

Although Donny was worried for his friends, he couldn't help it. He felt some kind of exhilaration flooding his veins. This.. this was kind of fun. He knew somewhere deep down he really shouldn't be thinking that but, oh man, did it ever feel good to put the primal urges that pumped his blood to good use. He pushed himself off the ground with one foot and kept his wings as compact as possible as a right hook from his trident knocked a crow out of the air like a homerun at a ballpark. They were swarming, pecking at his wings uncomfortably, and it was all he could do to keep them off him, but it was worth it. With every whack, twirl, and stab, he felt alive.

The feeling vanished into the pit of his stomach when he spotted one of the crows aiming it's descent directly at the back of Elena's head. The girl was herding the Tales into a safer position, and though she might have been able to notice the crow in time, Donny felt ill at the possibility of collision. The crow bent it's talons forward as it flew for the girl, intent on injury.

With a determined growl through clenched teeth, Donny ignored the crows that ripped at his wing feathers, and dropped back down to the ground. The landing was only a springboard, lasting a split second to give him a boost as he sprang back upwards to cut off the crow. There were others on their way, and Donny knew he was about to collide with Elena, so instead of knocking that foul bird out of the air and leaving her open to others, he surged directly for her and swooped her right out of harm's way. His body twisted even as he grabbed her, and he landed with a skid on his bottom, bouncing like a stone skidding off the surface of water before it's eventual sink.

But of course, there wasn't time for chit chat; they weren't even close to safety yet. His eyes searched Elena for injury before he grimaced as he felt the crow intended for her, climbing up on his back. It had collided and ripped it's little talons into the back of his shirt, leaving bloody trails crawling down his back. He reached back and grabbed the crow by it's neck, pulling it out in front. It squawked and flailed, enraged by it's capture. Now, at least, Donny could get a good look at them.

"You are not pretty." He announced, before breaking it's neck, it's ugliness enough reason for it's demise.

When things had gotten even crazier than before Tiwaz decided that staying still and hoping Sylvester would protect her was not a good plan.

She'd dug into her pocket and yanked out the small smoky crystal orb that was the only constant she knew. It had been in her pants pocket when she was skating and had come into this strange world with her. It wasn't exactly a weapon but anything getting too close to her risked having it chucked at them with as much strength as the young girl could muster.

As she clutched the treasured object Tiwaz felt calmer, more settled and less like she was losing her mind. ( Who stabs fake birds with giant shiny forks?)

Staying low to the ground she crawled towards the gathering non fighting Tales " Anyone have a sock?" If she put her orb in a sock it'd work better as something to discourage the crows. As opposed to being small and shiny which attracted most birds.

"Shut yer yap, wench, lest I feed ye to 'em," Tybalt called over the cacophonous screams of the crows. His words, though sincerely meant, held less heat than they would have were he not currently occupied--and enjoying himself thoroughly. The dagger, covered in ethereal blood and gore, had become an extension of himself, swinging wildly and slashing at any bird fool enough to challenge him. Those crows too injured to stay aloft had found their demise under talons much larger than their own. Tybalt himself was not unscathed; his shirt was cut to ribbons clear up to his elbows, the rest stained with blood not belonging entirely to his enemies. He was bleeding from dozens of shallow scratches and smiling through it all. This was his element.

The sudden departure of his brother-in-arms went largely unnoticed; the crows that took off after him did not. The murder thinned enough to see through: he could see the group of defenseless Tales through flapping wings and stabbing beaks, and beyond that...

Beyond that was a completely new creature, shadow and blood and danger that made his feathers stand on end, snapping the crows between knife-like teeth as if they were toothpicks. But whose side was it on?

Elena hadn't noticed the crows heading for her, intent as she was upon getting everyone organized. It wasn't until Donny charged right at her that she reacted, letting out a rather undignified squeak as she was held close to him as they landed. "Donny? What are you -" she cut off as the crow was brought out in front of her and killed. Shrinking back a bit, she stayed like for a moment before twisting herself around and planting a kiss on his cheek. "Thank you," she breathed out, getting up and back to her self-appointed job, leaving Donny free to resume his, while steadfastly ignoring the creature Tybalt had just noticed.

Donny felt a little guilty for killing something in front of Elena, when he saw her initial reaction. He had let her go, but stayed seated for a bit after the event, to let his bottom stop stinging from the slide and his back stop aching from the scratches. However, these feelings seemed to disappear when he felt a kiss on his cheek. It was curious that it had just happened, and he blinked at Elena with clear confusion as she stood up and walked away. But why? Donny got kisses on the cheek all the time. Why did his cheeks flush now, and the pain in his body fade as if it wasn't there to be noticed? It was weird. He scratched his cheek lightly with his hand and wondered if one of Elena's powers might be at fault, then stood up and found himself in a world of pain. Oops, the pain was still there after all. He winced and tried to twist his head back to look at what he could see, but instead his eyes caught sight of a big, black, something. He turned around and swiveled his trident without thinking, as his mind snapped back into a clearer, quick thinking state. There was something fighting the crows too, but.. really, whatever that was did not look friendly. In fact it looked downright evil. He didn't like evil things; they were very often ugly.

Donny began a slow backup until he felt something bump against his legs. A quick sideglance informed him that the something was Sylvester and another Tale he didn't know, Tiwaz. Sylvester was crouched on the ground, and almost made Donny trip over him. "You okay?" He asked the long-necked Tale and the other, while keeping his eyes fixed on the black shape that loomed close by. He didn't dare look around for the rest of his mates; he had the feeling that one second of looking away could be the end of things.
