Zombie apocalypse?
  Yes, please.
  No, thank you.
But the African witch-doctors told me that...

Disclaimer: I realize this post is ridiculous. Do not take it too seriously, or try to argue for or against the existence of zombies. That is irrelevant. This is merely a "what if?" scenario, spawned from the paranoia of a friend of mine.

Ok, so some background on where this is coming from. I have a friend. He is afraid of things. Things such as Frank from Donnie Darko, government surveillance, and zombies. Yes, he once called me at midnight so he could get from his computer room to his bedroom "because people on the phone never get killed." Yeah. That was after he beat Resident Evil. Yeah.
Then, a few nights ago, he called me to tell me his plan for the zombie apocalypse. Which would be ******** awesome, in my opinion. What better way to go out than to be fighting off masses of zombies? But yeah, he planned out the whole thing. I'll spare you the tedious details, and just skip to the main point. He planned out jobs for different people. I don't know why, but I got the "leader" position, and I was the makeshift medic. Some of his friends were the big macho "defender" guys, and...I don't know, some other people were in his plan, too. Oh, he was the computer geek who sets up the perimeter with motion sensors and surveillance cameras and s**t.

So anyway, that got me thinking...We've talked about preparing for apocalyptic battles and the like in the guild before. (At least I think it was this guild. It may have been the GPG.) But it's mostly been against astral beings and...supernatual...spirits...or something. The whole "veil" thing. But what if it wasn't astral monsters? What if it was animated corpses?

So. The charge: Plan for a zombie apocalypse. What do we need? Who would get what sort of "position"? Where would we build the pseudo-fortress, or would we migrate?

This is purely for entertainment purposes and to curb my boredom and curiosity. Have fun with it.

>.> what kind of suplies are there at hand?

assuming that you have any materials at hand and ready:
the location would be on top of a bridge that is above water. at either end of the bridge ,about 70ft beofre the bridge hits land, there are squads of people sized 5 people by 10 people, all armed with mechine guns/ pistols/shotguns. the leader who directed the group of whatever survivors are left in teh middle would direct them as to who goes where, ect. also, theres like... a life time supply of pizza in the middle/ enough water to feed everyone.... and little escape boats at the ready...

*chuckles* I can help out with this!!

1.) Assessment of team and team's abilities. Strength, speed, serenity, and any mad skillz need to be disclosed at this time in order to plan out who would be best for what.

2.) Establishment of defendable HQ. Headquarters should have a sturdy door with a deadbolt lock, and minimal windows on the first floor. Building material is important, too; a brick or stone building would be optimal. Multiple floors would allow aerial assaults on the advancing horde. Having no tree branches within normal reach of the building will ensure no bright "climb the tree" ideas from zombies. (However, if it requires a good leap, a tree branch can make a good escape/secondary attack post).

3.) Keep HQ well stocked. This will be your armory/fallout shelter. Canned foods, bottled water, weaponry, ammo, gasoline (for powering things), a generator, and a twice stocked bar. Half of it's for you, and the other half is for raining fire. twisted

4.) All team members should have a cellular phone (I doubt the zombies would take out cell towers) equipped with "walkie-talkie" features and bluetooth headsets (you'll need your hands free). Headquarters should have a working computer for correspondence with other teams and for organization's sake.

5.) This is a little far-fetched, but it just may work. Keep a freezer handy and full of distractions. Speak with a butcher to get spare parts; throwing some of these to the zombies may keep them from gnawing on you just long enough...

The first step: what is the size of the outbreak? If it is Class 1 (very small) or Class 2 (very small), then forget setting up a huge compound defended communally. The best place to defend is your own home. However, this is only advisable if you have access to a building which is not ground floor only. If you only have a one story building, either find somewhere else or go on the roof.

When defending your own home, at the first sign of a zombie breakout, FILL YOUR BATHTUB. This secures you a water supply, and if you have no bathtub, fill everything available with water. You should have already stocked enough food to survive for about one month. Barricade the downstairs doors and window, and then retreat upstairs with your supplies. Your equipment list should be as follows:

Water, three quarts per day, for cooking and washing
Hand pumped water filter
Four replacement filters
Cistern for collecting rainwater
Iodine and/or purification tablets
Canned food, at least three per day (preferable to dried goods as tins contain some water
Two portable electric stoves
Advanced medical kit (needs to contain field surgery equipment and antibiotics)
Bicycle powered electric generator
Gasoline generator (emergencies only)
20 gallons of gasoline
Rechargeable battery powered shortwave radio
Battery powered flashlights
Rechargable battery powered electric lamps
Solar powered radios (also rechargeable batteries will do)
Reinforcement materials
Extensive toolkit
Lime or bleaching powder to establish a latrine if necessary
High powered telescope with spare lenses and cleaning equipment
15 flares
30 chemical light sticks
5 fire extinguishers
2 sets of earplugs (to block out the noise of ceaseless moaning from zombies)
Spare parts for all aforementioned machinery + instruction manuals

This covers one individual. Multiply depending on the numbers in the group.

As for weaponry, you will need:

Rifle (semi-automatic or bolt action) 500 rounds
Shotgun 12 gauge, 250 shells
Pistol, .45 calibre, 250 rounds
Silencer (rifle)
Silence (pistol)
Heavy crossbow (in lieu of silencers), 150 bolts
Telescopic sight (rifle)
Night vision scope (rifle)
Laser sight (pistol)
Katana
Wakizashi or other short bladed sword
Two knives with small 6-8 inch blades
Hand hatchet

Again, multiply as necessary.

The most important thing to do when in one's own home is stay active, stay fit, but most of all stay QUIET and INVISIBLE. Noise and light attracts zombies. Make sure to blackout your windows and make your building as soundproof as possible. If you don't attract zombies, you need not worry. If you do, you dispatch them silently using a silenced ranged weapon, and burn the corpse to prevent a health hazard. The fire may attract more zombies but they can be dispatched in a similar method. If a zombie senses in any way, it will groan and attract more zombies than your fire ever could have. So remember, stay active, stay fit, and stay smart. If anything goes wrong, you will have to leave your shelter, which is the worst possible scenario. Be it you're overwhelmed by zombies (better to leave than to fight) or you've run out of supplies, both are bad situations.

In Class 3 or 4 zombie outbreaks, which will last from months to YEARS, your best bet is to exit civilisation entirely and set up a settlement miles from any possible human activity. This way, any zombies that do stray across you will be stragglers who can be silently taken out and burned. The reason why you need to be far from civilisation is also because of bandits. In a world swarming with zombies, people will rob and rape others.

In order to build this settlement far from civilsation, you need everything mentioned above, and a new shelter. Preferably build it off the ground but if you're far enough from civilsation you won't have to risk fighting off zombies. Just make sure it can withstand PEOPLE instead. Make sure it is well built, and offers a good defensive position. It also needs renewable sources of food and water. Can you hunt, farm, or fish? If not, find somewhere else. Make sure to stock many books, musical instruments and activities. If you don't, you WILL go insane. Once all this is prepared, establish your transport link. You need to be able to get from your point of origin to your new stronghold before people will start following. That means having a vehicle (off-road motorbike being preferable, with extra fuel supply due to its mobility in traffic jam situations) on standby ready for IMMEDIATE use.

And again, you must keep active, keep fit and keep smart. Learn how to make smokeless chimneys. Make sure no-one knows where you are until the zombie outbreak is over and the world can start afresh. Only settle with people you can trust: if someone runs away, they can alert either zombies or bandits to your position, and once they know you are there, there are too many to defeat. Unlike earlier scenarios, where zombies could be dispatched even if large groups came to your door (with your weaponry stockpile, up to 100 zombies could be taken out from an advantageous firing position without a problem), in a zombie world, your largest chance of survival is not to make a fortress but to stay hidden. You can snipe a few straggling zombies, but you cannot fight off a horde of a million no matter how large your weapons stockpile. You may be able to fight off one small group of bandits, but if a large one discovers you, the game is over.

Remeber: plan ahead, and once the zombie uprising begins, stay active, stay fit, stay smart.

Complete Zombie Survival Guide, FTW.

It sounds all most like Blind was doing a data transfer~!

Forgot to mention a few key bits of information:

In any zombie outbreak, stay away from:
Hospitals
Pollice Stations
public buildings/places of any variety
Single story buildings
Urban areas
Deep bodies of water (unless you are floating along the top of said water, well away from the shore)
"Friendly" climates (people will flock to them, thinging they're smart)

Awesome locations to go (w/o a technical background):
Apartment buildings iff (means if and only if) the stairs from the ground floor have been knocked out/down and the elevator is disabled above ground floor.

Prisons.

"The country"

Deserts (clear vision, don't have to worry about bandits should civilization collapse)

Swamps (speeds up decay proces in undead)

Tundra (you wont need to worry about undead... they'll freeze in place before long. No infected humans to worry about)

Military bases.

Awesome places to go w/ tech background:

Off-shore oil rigs/platforms - a veritable compound off shore... no dead to worry about. Biggest problem? A lot of complex machinery, and things breaking down due to rust

Small/personal islands - requires sailing experience/knowledge... and a good deal of luck

Prisons.

Tundra.

Desert

Any extreme where no one else will ever go.

It's made me worry what humanity is coming to when a book can convince me to prepare against such an unlikely event.

Isn't life grand? ^_~

So... where would you go first... assuming a Class 3 outbreak, and you happen to have a bicycle that doesn't make loud noises?

Trying to be realistic of course... no "I get my AK-47" unless you really do have one. Also... no imaginary people. If you share an appartment/living space, then you may use them... otherwise, you start alone.

I have both a bicycle and motorcycle. But I don't know where the hell I'd go. Best bet would be heading to one of the islands off Britain's coast, but some of them are so well populated there could already be outbreaks present.

Hmmm...honestly, as long as it wasn't already in here, I could stay in my dorm. Raid the dining hall for food, have one of the tech savvy people in here shut down the elevator...I'm sure there's SOME way of taking care of the stairs. With the wireless we have in here (I don't know where the router is, but there's always a possibility of moving that stuff up, depending on how much time we're given), we could stay connected to the rest of campus.

British students only get dorms during the first year of their study at University. I live in a ground floor apartment now. neutral
