Chozi giggled as he swatted at a butterfly lazily swooping past him. He was exploring the beach for about the thousandth time that week, wishing perhaps Aten would come play. But he was probably getting into trouble! Chozi had also noticed he and his brothers were getting bigger! Though he remained the smallest of the three...
He really never saw his sister unless he woke up first and spotted her sleeping. It was a little weird, and he didn't get a good feeling from her. Maybe mommy would collect shells with him today!
He hummed as he plotted along, tail swishing and eyes shut. He was such a carefree, happy little boy.

Kapuki’s soft little eyes didn’t even see the pale form of her brother making its way lackadaisically up the beach. Instead of watching the tide or picking up seashells as many cubs would do in this sandy, ocean-side terrain, Kapuki had found herself quite another little point of interest. Before her, in pieces, was a crab. He seemed to have been tossed up on the beach sometime during the night, swirled and bashed against the jagged rocks lining this section of the beach. Kapuki frowned at the now dead creature before her lithe, dark little frame, wondering why it deserved such a cruel fate.
She sighed and moved to pull the sand over its exposed form, giving it a sort of burial in the wet grain. Then she simply turned her attention out towards the sea, ear stretched and swiveled back as she listened to the soft rushing of the waves before her. A smile spread over her maw, as if she were hearing all the secrets of the world in the whisper of the waning tide.
That is, until she heard the little plodding noise of paws against packed wet sand, and an immediate scowl crossed her once delicate features. Those soft eyes became hard as stone, turning to glare down the beach. There she saw him, the pale form marked with red, the silly look on his face that she would have recognized at twice the distance. She narrowed her eyes, pushing herself to her paws, and stalked out to sit directly in his path.
“What do you want, Chozi?” she called, almost unkindly, but only if one listened hard enough. She disliked anyone interrupting her at times like these. She was the only one the ocean talked to, and she didn’t like it when other people tried to hear the secrets they shared. Stupid Chozi.

Chozi stumbled at his sister's voice and when his eyes that so closely matched hers landed on the twin pair he started to tremble. Just slightly, mostly from her tone. He didn't want anything from her! "Kapuki?" He said, stupidly. He had never seen her on the beach before... did she come here a lot?
"I.. I d-don't want anything, I was just playing.." He said softly, he'd stopped walking when he was closer to her. Not close enough to touch or reach with a paw though.

Kapuki sniffed slightly as she heard her brother’s words. She doubted that he wanted nothing, not out here near the ocean like this. She was sure he was coming to steal her seashells, the pretty gifts that the ocean had left for her. Her, not Chozi, not any of the rest of her siblings or family. They were all hers, and everyone always tried to steal them – especially Chozi with his constant gathering. It would be different if he had asked her, but he hadn’t. If he just asked, then she would let him have some. Of course, maybe she didn’t want anyone to know about the relationship she had to the ocean?
“I’ll believe you this time,” she said quietly, narrowing her pale eyes on him with a little huff. Then, she simply shrugged it off and pushed a small, slightly damaged shell around with her paw. She should pick up more of these pretty things that the ocean had given her before they were beaten up on the rocks – the ocean probably wouldn’t like for her to let them all go to waste. Well, the ocean already seemed to be a little moody today, after all it had just killed one of its own little creatures, so maybe she should try and be nice to Chozi long enough to play with him? Yeah, that sounded nice, just for a little while. Maybe he would help her pick up her presents?
“Do you want to go collect some of my shells with me?” she said calmly, almost sweetly, which was an honest little change of personality. She pushed herself up onto her paws, her head still tilted at him as she waited for an answer.

Chozi shuddered, he wasn't sure why his sister gave him such a bad feeling in his gut! But then she seemed to grow nicer, asking him to collect shells with her! Her shells? He looked around the beach slowly, not exactly understanding. Had she already collected them and wanted to recollect them? Oh well, whatever!
"Oh yes Kapuki! I'd like that very much!" He purred out, beaming at his sister. Of course he wanted to play with her if she was going to be nice!
He bounded to his feet. "Do you know where lots of good ones are? I do! Do you want to see them Kapuki?" He was so excited, he couldn't help but want to show her his treasures.

Well, Kapuki probably wouldn’t take very nicely to him telling her that he had collected his own ‘treasures’. In her opinion, they were all hers. However, if he wanted some, maybe she’d let him have them. After all, she certainly couldn’t get them all by herself and she honestly couldn’t keep them all even if she did manage that. She just couldn’t! The thought saddened her, realizing that she couldn’t keep all of the gifts the ocean gave her. Of course, maybe the ocean just gave them all to her and only expected her to keep ones she thought were prettiest? Yes, that had to be it.
"Of course I know where all the – " she began, almost snapping at Chozi. However, as she pushed herself to her feet, she shook her head and let that anger die down. It wasn’t his fault that he was so abrasive and hyper, or that he didn’t know the ocean told her where all the best ones were. Her relationship with the ocean was a secret, purely confidential. She wouldn’t want anyone to be jealous, now.
“No, why don’t you show me?” she said kindly, her mood seeming to switch back and forth quickly once more. She quirked an eyebrow at him, her pale eyes boring down into his, and waited for him to take the lead. She knew there were only a few places he could take her, and she’d been to them all before. She knew the secrets of the beach and the ocean better than anyone did – and that was simply that.

He winced at her tone, flipping back to her angry mood, and his eyes almost started to water. Oh why did she have to be so flip-floppy? He only liked when she was nice... which he never really saw her so he didn't know how often that actually was... in any case he only liked when anyone was nice!
He shifted and looked a little sullen, this play-date didn't sound so appealing as it first did. But his dismay was soon forgotten as he took the lead, bringing her to some of the sea coves. He thought that the prettiest little gems (sand glass, really) and shells found their way into these places and it pleased him to share it with her.
"Right over her Kapuki!" He led the way in. "See!" There were tons of shells, Chozi always brought a few here every day besides the ones that washed up.

As one could expect, Kapuki thought very little about whether or not Chozi really liked her. She had the ocean, the breeze, and all the best treasures sitting right there to be grabbed or looked at when she needed to do so. Her family was vaguely important to her, but nothing could take the place of something like that, not ever. If Chozi saw her as a little odd, or even a little scary, it would never matter. He wasn’t the one that concerned her, the one that worried her. Sure, she may not like to be disliked, but she didn’t mind as long as she had the affection of the great ocean.
She followed her brother idly, watching him lope along ahead of her, although her ears were for the ocean alone - the soft splash of waves against the shore, the surge and retreat of the water over the gentle beach line. She smiled as the crests folded and sent mist splattering up, coating her in that sticky sweet smell of salt water.
“These are pretty,” she said quietly, staring down at the little cove. She had seen this one and a few other like it while wandering up and down the coast. She immediately began to shift through the little bits of sea glass, purring to herself as she did. Her little paw shifted them from side to side, looking for the prettiest ones. She had her own little stash, and no matter if Chozi deposited them here or not, she’d be taking what she wanted. “I wish I could carry them with me all the time, it’s such a shame for all these pretty things not to be seen by everyone.”

Chozi watched her a minute before coming beside her to look at which one's she liked best. He was proud to show her the pretty things, he felt like he was doing some grand deed for his sister. Little did he know that she already knew of this place.
At her disappointment of not being able to show off pretties he thought back to when he and father had met the king. Oh what a giant, lovely lion the king had been! "You could weave them into your fur like the ocean pride does!" He offered, feeling very smart for making the suggestion.
"Like these!" He moved away from her and pawed at the sand a few places until he found a thin, spiral shell with a small opening at the top, perfect for fur to slip through it. "Or in your tail fluff." He giggled, picking up the shell with his mouth and bringing it to her, setting it down.
What a simple minded little boy.

Kapuki had really been far too consumed with the ocean and her daily walks around the beach to bother going with her father to see the king or to actually pay attention to any of the pride members that came by from time to time. As it was, her brother mentioning the general tradition of the sea pride made her narrow her eyes slightly at the shells. So other lions were taking her things too? Why didn’t the ocean punish them for stealing? Oh, but the trials it put her through!
“That’s a good idea,” she said with a smile, and although it was slightly forced, it seemed fairly genuine. She wrapped her tail around her paws and held it down until it was right in front of her. With a little narrowing of her eyes on the shell, she reached out and pulled it towards her. After a few moments of moving the shell around awkwardly and frowning at failed attempts, she finally figured out how to work it right. She stood up, flickering her tail slowly, with the small little shell gleaming in the sunlight.
“That’s pretty, don’t you think so?” she said as she eyed her own tail, a satisfied smile spread over her little mug. Well, she wasn’t exactly conceited. Probably just crazy.

Chozi wiggled as he watched her, eyes following her tail as she finished. "That looks very beautiful on you Kapuki!" He purred out, beaming at her. "Can I have one too?" He asked, excited as he bounded around her, tail flicking. Maybe in his mane! Or matching in his tail like his sister!
"Then we can really impress the royals cause we will be like them! And then we can all be part of the pride and make friends and stuff!" He chirped. I mean, why wouldn't she want that? He did!

Kapuki eyed him wearily as she watched him bound around and around her figure, face rather blank although annoyance seethed behind her pale eyes. Her jaw clenched tightly, though with him bounding around her so quickly he wasn’t likely to notice, and she simply had one thought racing through her mind over and over again – don’t hit him, don’t hit him, don’t hit him. It really did take a constant vigilance not to leap up and attack him for being so overly damn hyper. She really was trying to be nice.
“Get over here and be still so I can put it on you then,” she said with a little frown, leaning down slightly to look at the piles of seashells packed beneath their delicate paws. She shifted around until she found one that was almost identical to her own – they both had that same glimmering, shiny appeal that looked rather like a pearl or the inside of an oyster’s shell. She scooped it up with her paw, holding it close to her chest, and simply quirked an eyebrow. “You going to let me put it on or not?”
She scoffed at his words about the royals, shaking her head slowly. “Why do we need to be friends with them, Chozi? We’re just as good as they are and I bet we could wear even prettier and bigger shells than they have.” She nodded, as if it was as simple as that – the lion with the biggest and prettiest shells was obviously better. Of course, that probably had something to do with her insane notion about the sea. The more gifts you had, the more it liked you, and the simple fact was that the ocean liked her the best.
