Mothstar's Den
User Image
Welcome to the den of the Riverclan leader Mothstar! This thread is Mothstar's Journal, and it is also where I'll be posting any completed PRPs involving her. Finally, it will also help me to keep track of situations in the clan.

If you want to strike up a quick RP with Mothstar feel free to simply start in this thread using Mothstar's den as the setting. Rembember, she has lots of responsiblities, so she probably wouldn't be able to go out on many hunts and patrols, but a conversation here and there would be lovely. If the RP progresses we can move to a PRP thread.

Background Information:

Mothstar is a young, rather large dappled brown she cat with marks shaped like folded gypsy moth's wings on her back. In the light her pelt sometimes reflects purple and red colors. Her eyes are also brown. Her warrior name was Mothpelt.

Mothstar is a very good hunter, and she is very dedicated to her clan. However, she is afraid of offending other cats and clans and often lets her own warriors and other leaders push her around. She is fearful of twolegs, but is rather accustomed to them because they come to the river so much in the summer. Mothstar is hostile toward loners if they threaten to take up any of the clan's resources.

The following Roleplay was entered in the competition for the position of Riverclan leader. Events and names are fictional, but it gives you a good view into Mothstar's character.

Roleplay

“Congratulations Mothpelt!”

“Yes, Mothpelt, you’ll make a great deputy!”

The brown she cat purred with delight as her clanmates chanted her name. She scanned the crowd for her former mentor Redfoot to find him beaming at her, pride shining in his blue eyes. Mothpelt turned to look at Pebblestar, and the grey and white cat nodded. Mothpelt stepped off the stone in where her ceremony had just taken place into the welcoming group of Riverclan cats.

***

“Darkfoot, Smudgefur, and Whiteface, you can fish up by the twoleg bridge, there hasn’t been much activity there for while. Owleye, Greywater, and Brownfoot, you can fish at the stepping stones.”

“Shall I bring Scalepaw?”

“Of course, Brownfoot, and you two can go straight from hunting to training if Owleye or Greywater don’t mind carrying your catch back.”

“Fine with me,” Greywater answered. “I’ll fetch Owleye from the nursery. I believe he’s checking in on his kits.”

Mothpelt watched approvingly as the hunting parties formed. The dawn patrol would be returning soon, she should choose cats for the next patrol.

Pebblestar slipped out of his den and stretched.

“How am I doing my first day?” Mothpelt called.

“Excellently,” her leader replied. “Feel free to assign Flowerfur to the next patrol as well, Mothwing informed me that that cracked pad of hers has healed well. Who else would you select?”

“Orangetail and Bogstep could go with her,” Mothpelt answered, feeling confident in her choices.

Pebblestar nodded. “Good. I see you have everything under control here.”

“Pebblestar! Pebblestar!” Owleye burst out of the nursery, his already huge eyes twice their usual size. “Lionkit is gone!”

“Calm down, Owleye,” Pebblestar answered. “Have you checked the other dens?”

“Yes, I checked everywhere in camp. Sunwhisker thought he and Russetkit were going to play with Mothwing. She offered to watch them at the medicine cat’s den to give Sunwhisker a break, but only Russetkit showed up! Mothwing assumed Lionkit had just decided to sleep as well, so she didn’t tell anyone!”

Pebblestar’s eyes widened. “Owleye, run and catch the hunting party that just left, tell them to search upriver! Greywater, wake Orangetail and Bogstep and search by the stepping stones! Brownfoot, take your apprentice and circle the area of the camp away from the river, in case Starclan was merciful enough to guide him away from the water.”

Fear gripped Mothpelt. The clan had already lost two of Sunwhisker’s kits when they wandered too close to the river. Its banks were flooded more than usual this leafbare and it would only get worse as greenleaf came. The camp was flooded with movement as cats raced to search for Lionkit.

“Come on Mothpelt,” Pebblestar yowled as he bounded out of camp. “You and I will search downriver!”

Mothpelt barreled after the retreating grey and white form. Plants whipped her face and cold mud spattered her fur, but she kept running. They couldn’t lose anther kit. They just couldn’t!

A shrill, tiny wail rose up over the roar of the river. Mothpelt almost ran into Pebblestar as he stopped abruptly and turned toward the sound. A few more rabbit hops and she was up to her belly in icy water. The current tugged at her legs, and the shifting mud under her paws threatened to make her lose her balance. Pebblestar kept moving forward until only his head was visible. He cut through the water with swift strokes, toward the wet gold kit balanced on a dead branch caught against a rock.

Lionkit saw the other cat coming and tried to take a step forward.

“Lionkit! No!” Mothpelt yowled, but it was too late. The shift in weight caused the branch to pull free, and Lionkit was dumped into the numbingly cold water. Pebblestar stopped paddling and allowed himself to be carried away with the kit. Mothpelt struggled ashore and gave chase, her heart pounding.

Lionkit was swept under the current and Pebblestar dove after him. When the two didn’t resurface Mothpelt threw herself into the water as well. She gasped at the sudden cold, chocking on a mouthful of water. When she surfaced to take another breath Mothpelt saw the bundle of gold fur that was Lionkit bobbed up as well, and she caught his scruff in her mouth.

“Mothpelt! Over here!”

She struggled against the current toward the bank toward Redfoot. Thank Starclan, the Dawn patrol cats had found them! The larger cat caught a hold of Mothpelt as she drew near and pulled her onto the soggy mud. Leafpaw, his current apprentice, bent to take Lionkit.

“Ravenwing has gone to fetch Mothwing,” Redfoot assured.

“Pebblestar,” Mothpelt managed to gasp.

Redfoot’s eyes widened with fear. “We didn’t see him! We though it was just you who found Lionkit!”

Mothpelt scrambled to her feet and dived again. Pebblestar could just be further downriver now, but Mothpelt a horrible certainty that that had not been the case. Pebblestar had been an amazing swimmer; the current alone would not keep him from breaking to the surface.

As she opened her eyes underwater Mothpelt’s worst fear was realized. Pebblestar writhed in agony, his green eyes panicked. A twoleg fishing line had wound itself around his back left foot and repeatedly tugged him back down. His eyes stared blankly at her as he lost a life, and then the light would return to them for an awful moment as he returned from Starclan. Mothpelt struggled to the surface and paddled back upstream before diving and watching the process over again. And again. And again.

Try as she might, she couldn’t swim deep enough to reach him.

***

“Riverclan is here!”

“Where is Pebblestar?”

“Where is Rosefeather?”

“Who is that leading them?”

“Something’s wrong!”

“Tell Sunstar! Hurry!”

“Someone get Murkystar!”

“Pebblestar isn’t here?”

Mothstar pushed through the Gathering, trying to shut out the cries of confusion and disbelief that came from the other clans. The small group of cats behind her looked sad and defeated. They did not look at the other clans, and sat together away from the rest.

Mothstar took a deep breath and leapt onto the rock in the center of Fourtrees, next to Sunstar.

“Only clan leaders stand here. If you are speaking for Pebblestar you must give your report from below,” Murkystar, leader of Shadowclan, hissed.

“Pebblestar has not sent me,” Mothstar said quietly. “I am Mothstar.”

The resulting protests, yowls, and discussions took many moments to subside.

“But he only received his nine lives a few moons ago!” Sunstar gasped, his mouth hanging open.

“Where is Rosefeather? She was deputy at the last gathering,” Beezestar commented.

“Rosefeather has also joined Starclan,” Greywater answered from where the deputies sat. “Of course Windclan should already know that.”

“Are you accusing my clan of something?” Breezestar asked, his eyes narrowing.

“Greywater!” Mothstar called in astonishment.

Greywater ignored his leader. “Windclan attacked Rosefeather when she was escorting Mothwing to the Moonstone!”

“Your medicine cat did not need a guard! To send one was an insult to Windclan!”

“There had been dog attacks in the area; we had every right to send a warrior!” Greywater continued.

“Greywater! This is not the time! Let our leader speak!”

Mothstar gave a grateful smile to Redfoot before addressing the other leaders again. “Riverclan is suffering. We have lost our leader and deputy in a very short time. However, I have already been to Highstones and have received my nine lives, and our new deputy is Greywater. We mourn the loss of two of our kits.” Mothstar shifted uneasily. “That is all.”

***

“That is all? That is all! Why didn’t we just tell every clan that it’s a perfect time to invade?”

“Greywater, I’m sorry, I didn’t know what else to do.”

“You could have kept the kit’s deaths a private matter! You could have made Leafpaw a warrior so we could show the other leaders that we still have cats to fight!”

Mothstar quivered. “I’m sorry.”

“Greywater, don’t question our leader,” Owleye said. “She did the best she could under the circumstances.”

Greywater padded out of Mothstar’s new den.

“Thank you,” Mothstar said quietly.

“I haven’t forgotten how you saved my kit,” Owleye answered. “You have proved that you are a strong and brave cat Mothstar, you just need to believe it. Greywater was the obvious choice for deputy, but when he sees you falter he will assert his own authority. Don’t let him do that Mothstar. You’re the better leader. I know you are.”

Mothstar stared in disbelief as Owleye turned and left. He had given her a lot to think about.

Checking In:

Are you already deep into an RP and your cat needs to discuss something with a leader? This is the form to fill out. For example, use this form if your cat wants to report any suspicious behavior to Mothstar or alert her of possible danger to the clan, like twolegs or cats becoming ill. Does your cat just want to suggest a patrol in a certain area, or discuss trouble with an apprentice? Use the form as well! Anything that might require Mothstar's attention during an RP not in the main shop thread works. This form will generally get you one or two quick short replies, and then you can return to your main plot with Mothstar's blessing... or... not.

Names:

Is your Warrior Ceremony coming up? The final name is up to the cat's colorists, but if you really want a certain warrior name feel free to suggest it to Mothstar! Maybe something can be done. However, you should have a reason behind the name you choose if you want to select it. For example, in the Warrior's Books Crowpaw requests to be named Crowfeather in Feathertail's honor.

Please make sure to check the list of current warriors to make sure that you don't duplicate names, and do not request names of cats in the books as they may be used in future events.

(Nya, wow! You're really on top of this whole leader thing. ^-^ Were we supposed to make one of these? I hope I didn't miss a memo somewheres! >.< How does this work with 2 leaders anyway? Xp)

Fernstar let out a soft myew of greeting as she entered Mothstar's den. The tortoiseshell's searching blue eyes soon spotted the other Leader and she padded a little further in before settling on her haunches and wrapping her long-furred tail about her paws. Mothstar, I just returned with a small patrol," She began with a twitch of an ear, "everything seems to be well enough, but I'm bothered by the number of twolegs and their kits who are still hanging around the river by their bridge. There shouldn't be so many still coming this close to camp, so I think we should keep a watch on their actions and also keep a watch on our clan's kits as a few of them have begun to wander about outside the nursery." The light grey she-cat lapped at her fluffy chest-fur a couple of times in mild anxiety as she finished her report to Riverclan's other leader.

(We didn't have to make them, I just thought it would just help me stay involved with various RP :3 Feel free to set up your own thread for Fernstar if you want. We could link them together at the top, maybe saying that Mothstar has made her nest a bit to the right and Fernstar is on the left or something)

Mothstar slipped out of her nest and stretched as Fernstar entered the den, smiling at the other she cat. The twolegs' activity had been making her nervous as well, but she had been afraid that her recent appointment to leader had simply left her paranoid. "I think we should call a clan meeting about it soon, especially after Trinketkit's little adventure" Mothstar agreed. She kneaded the the soft moss beneath her paws nervously. "Do you think we could safely assign a cat or two to the bridge from sunhigh to sunset? We wouldn't want human kits mistaking our warriors for kittypets and..." Mothstar trailed off, not wanting to think about what could happen.

(*nod nod* That was a pretty neat way to keep everything organized! Yea, that sounds like a good idea. I'll get to work on Fernstar's on my next day off as I'm really busy with work lately x.x)

Fernstar nodded in response to Mothstar's proposal and noticed the other she-cat's uneasiness. "A clan meeting would definitely be a good idea, I think. If the other cats haven't noticed the activities already, we can make them all well aware of it." She myewed thoughtfully in response, "keeping a patrol on watch of the bridge would also be a good idea, but we must be sure they don't go near it or the humans. Our warriors are too valuable to lose to some mouse-brained twolegs, so they must remain concealed." The tortoiseshell made her way towards the other cat and touched her nose to the other's forehead. "Be strong, Mothstar," She purred, "You're doing a fine job of leading so far, you have the right instincts and mindset for it!" Fernstar smiled at the other leader and got to her paws again to leave for the freshkill pile. "I'm going to go have a bit to eat, and then we can call for the meeting if you'd like." She said with a nod, then added with a glint of amusement in her blue eyes, "It might be a good idea to put a warrior on watch of the kits as well. Trinketkit is quite the adventurous cat, and she seems to be able to easily lead the other kits into mischief." With a flick of her tail and a purr of laughter, Fernstar left Mothstar's den and padded out across the clearing to grab a fish from the pile.

{Twi, do you mind if I take inspiration from this thread for Sunstar's den? it's all really good ideas for things like the ceremonies.

But if it bugs you, no worries biggrin }
