Appearance: Umipai's hair is inky black, cut short, and angled into her head, with the longest locks barely scraping against the back of her neck and the shorter ones partly covering her ears; her bangs are choppy, uneven, and usually clump together on her forehead. Her skin is a natural shade of farmer's tan; her face is round and pleasant with a small, slightly-pointed chin and a tiny nose set below two large, emerald green eyes. She has yet to get rid of all of her baby fat, so she's a tad plump for her age; the fact that she's hopelessly short doesn't help, either. This discourages Umi greatly, who feels she will never excel in society unless she's thin and elegant like the older, richer women.
Umi's favorite outfit to wear is quite simple. A sea-green and pattern-less qi pao that has certainly seen better days gracelessly hangs off her body (in fact, the shirt is baggy and a size or two too big); the trim along the edges of the elbow-length sleeves and the neck line is a faded gold, as is the strip of cloth angling up the front flap of the qi pao.
Underneath the qi pao, she wears a sepia-toned, mid-shin length bundle of stitches that could barely pass for pants on a good day; the trim along the last inch of the pants leg is the same faded gold color as her shirt. Her feet are bare and rough.
Personality: Umipai is the antithesis to the phrase "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma and dipped in a crunchy candy shell". What she may lack in size and social status, this young girl makes up for it with spunk. Like any normal child, she's loud-mouthed, rude, cheeky, and a persistent trouble-maker. She's infuriatingly stubborn, and believes so strongly in her opinions that she has been known to yell and scream and cover her ears when her beliefs are under attack by the nefarious and dastardly villain, Logic.
Being extremely noisy, Umi has no concept of an indoor voice. She enjoys singing loudly and making all sorts of weird noises, especially in public. Greedy, selfish, slightly spoiled, she can be a bratty nuisance when she doesn't get her way. Around friends, she is just as loud and spotlight-hoarding as can be (she fancies having invisible tanlines from being in the limelight so much). Peppy and energetic, Umipai is definitely the party-starter, not party-pooper; as a matter of fact, Umi so despises buzz-kills, she works vigourously hard to cheer up downcast friends. And if they're not consoled? Well, sucks to be them.
Among strangers, there is very little change in her personalty. She is eager to impress people she doesn't know, especially those of a higher social status, with witty remarks and admittedly poor Earthbending. While her skills as an Eartbender are mediocre at best, she has been known to use her talents to pull off pranks on unsuspecting victims to show off.
Overall, Umi is a tolerable person who just wants to make a name for herself. With money. Lots and lots of money.
History: There isn't much to say about Umi's life so far. She was born in the dirtiest of the dirt poor in Outer Ring of Ba Seng Se to Iwashiro and Miyuki. At the time of her birth, Iwashiro was just starting a "lucrative rickshaw practice" while her mother stayed at home to care for the family's only baby.
Her childhood was pretty much normal: playing games with the neighborhood kids, attending a poorly-funded day school whenever she could, tagging along on her father's shifts. Much to Umi's dismay, there was no tragedy in her young life to give her some sort of mysterious appeal amongst the younger, more impressionable kids. No, both of her parents stayed alive and well.
When she was six, it was discovered that she could Earthbend. Ever since Umi was four, Miyuki had taken a part-time job cleaning the homes of families in the Middle Ring; however, the pitiful pay that brought home, coupled with the wages from Iwashiro's rickshaw runs, weren't enough to pay for classes. They weren't even enough for a private tutor. The only "training" she received were times when she wandered away from her father during breaks to watch the more skilled Earthbenders scattered around the city.
Currently, Umi still lives with her parents, being only 12, but the itch to explore, so common amongst youngsters her age, has started to develop. The problem is, there's a very small chance she'll actually be able to scratch that itch.
Likes: Kitties, Bending, her daddy, tagging along on rickshaw runs, wandering around Ba Seng Se, exploring, playing, spicy food, rough-housing, making mischief, new toys, new clothes, swimming, watching Firebending, cartwheels
Dislikes: Rich folks, anyone who tells her "no", being excluded, shabby-behind clothes, being talked down to, being forced to play nice, giant dragon-flies, room-temperature tea, super noisy crowds that aren't paying attention to her, being told she talks too much, hot days
