Please read whole first and second posts and relevant arguments before speaking.

This thread is a simple concept, whenever I feel like it I'll put up a battle. Battles will consist of two sides that can be simplified into a phrase or sentence, the simplified battle will be put in the title, and at least one paragraph will be written explaining each side in the second post.

The battle starts as soon as the new title is up. Once the battle has started pick a side and explain why it is best, then try and disprove the reasons other people think theirs' is best, basically argue about it, until the end of the battle at which point the poll will be put up, this is to prevent people from voting and doing nothing else.

The winner will be 50% the poll and 50% me picking whichever side I believe was argued best, doesn't matter if you win or if you're right just do your best. (most battles should not have a right or wrong anyways)

Remember, the whole point of this is to debate, talk, convey and develop thoughts and ideas, not jump in and say "Ah laik numba one"

Rules

  1. Do not let the fight get personal.
  2. Swearing is frowned upon but can be used appropriately.
  3. Don't beat the dead horses.

Current Battle

Bullets vs Blades

How you choose to kill your opponent says a lot about you or those you represent. With a sword you are right there striking them down with your own hand, your own strength, over theirs, it is very personal and involved. With a gun there is not even need to see your opponent ---

Battle History

Space vs Shire

pool
Space: 5
Shire: 4
No Comparason: 4

Space ::
Space is a very large area, the final frontier, full of who knows what. Anything can happen it'd be a safe guess that somewhere out there somebody is at war. But more to the point space RPs are generally filled with high tech stuff, super fast space ships, lasers, robots, and lots of action. They also lend well to operatic stories though they seem rare in RP form.

Shire ::
The old ages were full of all sorts of fun stuff, they were a time when that leather jacket was made by hand and if you looked close enough you could still see hammer marks on your sword. But also often there is the mystical mysteries of magic and all the power it holds. You wont find any cars but your trusty steed will take you to the ends of the earth to save that princess or find that mystical obelisk that opens the portal to the underworld so you can kill the great demon and save the kingdom. Or you can just hang out in the local bar and start fights with elves, ether way the life in the age of the shire had its action, its peace, and a lot of drama.

Personally I think they're both great and have a huge range of potential, but in my view space lends its self to action better, and I'm better at action.

I think Space, because:

In Shire, you have a limited amount of possibilities due to the lack of technology. Though it may be fun the harder way, space has endless possibilites: Lasers, robots, cool suits, and other awesome things. Besides, if you're in the space setting, you have superior technology, meaning time machines to take you to Shire. If not that, you can make a large area and with technology, change the environment to your liking. For more room, you can have an entire planet set up with it. Plus, you can spawn buildings items and other junk.

I see were Golden is going but saying that a shire setting lacks because it does not have technology is incorrect. A shire setting is to take away aspects like guns, cars, spaceships, and the like. Besides, when it comes to possibilities you can’t go wrong with magic. What can you not do with magic. Technology has a certain element to it that limits its functions. Technology can allow for space travel, time travel, and “recreating” ideas, but magic can do the same but instead of “recreating” magic actually can create. Now I like a good space story like any fan of anime, Gundam, Bebop, and the like, but when it comes to preference I would always rather watch, play, or participate in a shire idea world.

I like them both.... I mean when I first started out RPing, it was within a Star Wars group, and pretty much, you could go anywhere, and do anything a Star Wars character could do. One thing I've found about Space based RP's recently, is that everyone just plays a human, when the whole idea, in my opinion of playing a Space RP is that there is so many more species than you'd meet in a Shire!

However I love Shire RPs as well, mostly because of the diversity of character species involved in them. My first shire one, had three main species, which were "Humans, Draconians, and Dragons". Though that isn't very spread out, the uses of each species was unique and interesting...

In other words.... I choose neither.

It's actually quite hard to say which one is better at action, cause for one thing: We know the past history had a plethora of wars. You really can't assume one is better for action; In my opinion, they're both equal in terms of design and opportunities.

What's to stop you from sending a Fantasy character into Space?
PostPosted: Sun Sep 30, 2007 5:40 pm

Yea, they both have action, maybe I just like lasers more than magic. Yano, that reminds me, I haven't seen a good space opera in a while, and one can only watch cowboy bebop so many times, do we have any space opera RPs running around?

The problem I see with having a magical space RP is that there would just be too much to deal with, all this super-tech that would appear as magic, and all this magic, I'd get lost, thats not to say you couldn't pull it off, but you might have a funner time engineering a purely magic powered space RP, maybe throw in some living ships to make it a bit more reasonable.

A space Roleplay in my opinion would be the greater of the two. I'll list the pros and cons as I see them in the two types of Roleplays:

Space

Pro: Large ships at your command that can travel in an airless high gravity area. A space ship can travel at a faster pace so you can fit more into one post about how you executed each action.
Con: Shire type Roleplays can be guilty of this as well. I often see people falling back to ideas based on a popular tv show. Giant ships, aliens, weird weapons all behaving and operated in the same way they are on the tv shows. Very little original thinking so the Roleplay can get dull quickly.

Shire

Pro: Magical type Roleplays allow for more creative ideas. You aren't bound by the laws of realism as much in this type of Roleplay. The use of magical creatures isn't really a plus compared to Space Rps. But it is an equal factor, see you can create a new alien race just as easily as you can create a new type of beasts. Ultimately this is a type of Rp that more people can get into. There are many that dream of flight and such things but space travel isn't a common dream.

Con: The use of magical creatures as antagonists can be difficult to play in an interesting way. Aliens are pretty much established as creatures with superior intellect. But Beasts are known for having superior strength. By beasts I mean wolves, bears or mythical creatures. All types of animals can be used but at the same time there use is limited. While an alien or new species from a space rp can act as a second character aiding the first.

First day's over and Space has a fairly impressive lead over Shire, but things can change quickly in our dog eat cat eat mouse eat cheese world, but just think of how weird it would be if cheese ate stuff.

Friday, it ends tomorrow.

The conversation has died off but there are a few new votes, Shire has definitely drawn the short straw with this group, and Space is in the lead but good. N/C has a good following and is in position to take the lead, but it will have to double it's votes for that to happen.

As it stands the score is:
Space = 5
Shire = 2
N/C = 3

Lets see how the last two days change things.

I'm thinking maybe the round time should be shortened, it takes a good bit to keep an intelligent argument going strong for a week, and I doubt there are enough topics that lend to the goal. I'm thinking Wensday and Saturday for new fights.

I honestly prefer Shire, even though in the end I'm a big fan of current time RPs.
Space RPs, I think, just have so much elements, weapons, technologies and robots they become...messy, crowded. There is too much one needs to know before even starting to play.
And more often than not they're heavily based in this or that popular serie, leaving all the non-addicted out. Then, there is the not-so-pleasant idea of being closed in a ship for days in a row, and having to be familiar with seceral different settings...
Usually Space RPs get me tired right in the introduction. I think Shire is more approachable, because it's something we all have in our minds - we don't need paragraphs of description tounderstand what is a werewolf, and even the spells used are easy to understand. It's a setting that is more familiar to us, and therefore more comfortable.
I'm actually writting a fanfiction of KOTOR - a space/star wars RPG -, and I block a lot trying to find coherent backgrounds and reasons for things...

In my opinion, I prefer space RP's, but only if they're not all about fight and flight desu. Some RP's out there are just the same thing desu. Get a ship, fly around, kill a target, upgrade the ship, fly around, kill a target; it's usually the same thing over and over again desu. However, a well put together space RP, where there are many other options, like Rave clubs, bars, homes, and some actually storyline and thought are the best desu. I still enjoy shire RP's due to the white magic deal, and shire RP's are a lot of fun, but I still prefer space desu (unless there's no story).
