Half-lidded azure hues stared blankly into the distance at the sun slowly peeking over the horizon, expression glazed over in thought as the normally surly stallion was silent in his contemplation. It had been another sleepless night, unsurprisingly, as he pondered his familial problems, the occasional melancholic sigh escaping his lips. He was completely unaware that his current persona was more similar to his mother's than his own... perhaps the thought would have brought him some comfort, but he remained in his dark contemplations.

Rising slowly to all fours from his resting place on the soft grass, the winged stallion stretched his back like a cat, ebony feathered wings unfurling and stretching themselves over his sides as a tired yawn cracked his jaw. Having been in the same position for a number of hours, his muscles were stiff and sore from disuse. Another agitated sigh escaped his mouth as he straightened, turning towards the small lake and starting down the worn dirt path. Perhaps a morning drink would calm his thoughts.

At that water's edge stood a mare of at least twelve shades of grey. She stood perfectly still, her only movement caused by the wind flowing through her mane. Droplets of early-morning dew clung to her body, causing her to almost glitter. She had stood there since a time when not even the birds were after the first worms yet, unable to sleep.

Her lavender gaze was directed at the water, though the rippling water didn't really register in her mind. She looked there simply because she had nowhere better to look, not because of any persistent need to watch a lake move.

Simply put, she was bored.

Life, so full of surprises and mysteries, seemed dull to her. She had studied all that she found interesting, staring at the little things for hours on end just to add to her knowledge on them. She had watched many sunsets, seen the moon pass across the sky more times then she could count... she felt old, though her body still glowed with the fire of youth.

It had been some time since he'd had the opportunity to reflect on things in solitude; and while it felt nice to be alone on occasion, Kureno reluctantly found himself wishing for companionship, no matter how useless or trivial he had deemed it to be. He had no need for others, and he was stubborn in his refusal to seek out friendships.

A brief glimpse of silver, ebony and ivory drew his attention to the smaller form of a mare a few steps ahead of him, disregarding his initial assumption that it was his mother- she seemed to have similar coloring, but the similarities ended there. He didn't speak as he approached the water's edge a few feet from her side, lowering his head to drink from the cool waters as cerulean hues focused stubbornly on the glimmering surface.

Just because he was a bit lonely didn't mean Kureno would make it easy for himself or any other soquili to befriend him.

Often the object of scrutiny, Evelyn had become so familiar with recognizing when the eyes of another were fixed upon her form. Her ears flickered backwards, leading her head as it swiveled about to face that of the stallion.

He was the color of dirt that had been touched by the warm rays of the sun. His ebony mane hung about his face like that of the Mers she had sometimes seen peeking out from the depths of the water. He was winged.

The data was entered into one of the many files that lay about her brain, though the folder lacked a name. She fell into this automatic cataloging without a thought, her boredom momentarily dispelled by the prospect of meeting another.

His lack of greeting seemed neutral to her. He was not overly enthusiastic, nor intent upon bullying her into conversation... Perhaps he might provide a few hours of something other then mindless chatter?

Azure hues lifted from their intense stare on his reflection in the clear waters to meet the gray mare's lavender gaze from the corner of his eye, and he lifted his head slowly to face her with a flat stare. Curiosity won out in the end over his reluctance to associate himself willingly with another soquili, and a brief of his head acknowledged her presence curtly as his voice, low and gruff, broke the companionable silence between them.

"Salutations."

It wasn't much, simply a one-word greeting, but it was more than he usually offered to passing strangers.

The ghost of a smile flickered across her face, curving her lips upwards for a brief moment before letting them fall back to their normal position. Time had taught her that smiles were not acceptable in every situation. She hoped that she might smile freely some day, but for the time being... smiles were best left for foals. Adults sometimes misunderstood their meaning.

Her eyes could do as they wished. Why attempt to hide that which lies in your soul? Doing so would only bring suspicion.

Those lavender eyes shimmered now, twirling with an inner light much like the jewel upon her chest.

"My greetings to you." Her voice was soft and gentle; a sharp contrast to his rougher tone.

He shifted uncomfortably from one foot to another, contemplating his own reaction to meeting another mare. He didn't usually make an effort to converse with other soquili, but taking into consideration the fact that he had been... feeling somewhat alone lately, he could overlook the strange behavior.

Attempting to return the ghost of a smile that he caught briefly flitting across her features, he failed miserably, the expression looking more like a grimace as he slid his stoic mask into place once more.

"What brings you out here alone?" So he wasn't good at small talk- no one in his family was, if his mother had been truthful to him about his heritage. How was he supposed to learn? Trial and error seemed the best way, but that didn't take into account making a fool out of himself in the process.

Had he grimaced? ... Looking at the expressionless mask he wore now, it seemed unlikely that any smile or frown had ever crossed his face.

"I am most always alone; I wander across the lands, looking for something interesting to pass the time." That was the pure and simple truth. She had met a few interesting stallions here and there, mares that she might have begun to call friends if she had given those relationships time to mature, and of course a multitude of smaller animals. None had truly called to her. None had made her want to stay, passing the seasons in one place. None had been so interesting as to not allow her mind to wander for even a second... for when her mind begins to wander, it is not long before she begins to search for something new.

She cast a glance to the empty space behind him, void of Soquili or Familiars. He was alone as well.

She realized then that she did not even know his name. She was speaking to a complete stranger... perhaps he had realized this as well? Maybe if they exchanged names, she could coax a smile onto his face? "I am called Evelyn."

A single nod was given in response to her admission of solitude, noting its similarity to his own lifestyle. Of course, he preferred his choice of living... he supposed that there were others that didn't live a life of loneliness by choice. He felt a slight tug on his heart that might have been sympathy, but he pushed it away as quickly as it came, repressing a scowl at the alien thought. Kureno pitied no one.

He paused a moment at the mention of her name, slight hesitation showing in his posture as he shifted on his feet. Giving her his name was an invitation to try to befriend him, and he wasn't sure he wanted that. Nevermind the sudden bout of loneliness that had settled upon his hardened heart only moments earlier...

After another moment of hesitation, a slight incline of his head was given to the grey dappled mare, and his low baritone broke the silence. "I am Kureno. It's... nice... to meet you." The words were awkward and stiff, but as sincere as he could make them, cerulean hues meeting her own gaze.

A soft smile touched upon her dappled features, the barest hint of warmth showing in her cool lavender eyes. Whether she was attempting to make up for his utter lack of displayed emotions, or simply amused, was up to the interpretation of the one who gazed upon her. In truth, it was only habit.

She had learned long ago to be polite. Never speak unless spoken to, learn to read other's expressions to know when it was best to be sympathetic and when to show anger, avoid uncomfortable situations by taking your leave before forcing another to ask you to go... and give your name upon the first meeting. Such were the rules of engagement, and to those she would stick.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Kureno." Her words, though they flowed much faster then his, were just as sincere.

Only time would tell if they were true.

He noted the warm smile that adorned her muzzle, and although a small part of him wanted to return the gesture, he found himself unable to do so. Azure hues reflected his hesitance before he simply looked away, unable to find an appropriate response.

Kureno was unused to kindness, unused to social interaction, and unused to caring about such things in general. He had no desire to have companions or friends... or maybe he hadn't previously... but his recent bout of loneliness suggested otherwise. With a heavy inward sigh, he resigned himself to the idea that... maybe he did want his life to change, if only a little bit.

"So... Evelyn..." he hesitated again, looking distinctively uncomfortable and shifting his weight uneasily. "Would you like to... walk with me?"

Evelyn's gaze faltered, and she looked away as well. His words came slowly, hesitantly... as if he was not certain that he really meant them. Was he offering only because he felt it was necessary?

Her lavender gaze had fixed upon a rock laying amidst a bed of dew-touched grass. It was the cool grey of rain clouds, covered in a thin layer of dust. Its surface was uneven, random lumps of lighter-hued rock protruding forwards and creating a rippled effect. She had seen rocks like it before.

It was a geode, with beautiful clusters of crystal hidden beneath that rippling grey exterior. If sufficient force was used, the plain barrier would break away to reveal the splendor within. All it took was someone willing to break through that first layer of defense, and all the glory that was inside would shine through for the whole world to see.

She jerked, her eyes flickering back to Kureno's silent form. She had allowed her thoughts to wander, forgetting that she was not alone.

"I would love to." Even if that offer had been made out of a feeling of obligation, she would not turn down an opportunity to stretch her legs.

A brief pause followed her answer to his inquiry, and after a moment, a small ghost of a smile flitted across his features before it faded quickly, leaving a bare semblance of warmth in his eyes before he turned his head away. It wasn't much, but it was more than he gave to most... and he supposed that she deserved his respect, if nothing else, for even putting up with him this long.

Turning, he motioned for her to walk next to him with a gesture of one ebony-feathered wing, starting at a slow pace down the worn dirt path. Although he supposed he'd made somewhat of a breakthrough with simply asking her to join him, he was well aware that it probably didn't mean much to another with social experience. He could only hope that she was exceptionally patient and/or understanding.

Evelyn's gaze softened, his silent offer soothing her momentary shock at allowing her thoughts to wander so freely while in the presence of another. A brief glimpse of warmth had shone in his azure eyes before he had turned. An answering warmth shone in hers now.

Raising one hoof from the ground, she moved to follow him. Wherever he may lead.

Many days had passed since the walk spent in pleasant company. The two had wandered freely since then, each taking their separate paths. But, as fate would have it, it was not the last time they were to meet.

When the sky had only just cleared after a raging storm, clouds parted to reveal great beams of dazzling sunlight, Kureno had wandered across Evelyn savoring the warmth of the sun.

When the dusky hues of twilight played upon the water's edge, Evelyn had found Kureno bathing in a cool stream.

When the sun was rising across a silent meadow, Kureno had spotted Evelyn's silhouette blackened against the horizon.

When mist rose like a veil from the ground, obscuring the world from view, the two had nearly missed each other, vision blurred by the fog.

When a wind blew across the valley's floor, carrying with it scents from high upon the mountaintops and deep within the ocean's waves, Evelyn had discovered Kureno watching the clouds fly by.

There were many encounters such as these, some lasting minutes and others hours. There was conversation, pleasant silence, and blissful excursions. No matter where there wanderings took them, they always seemed to find each other again. A hesitant friendship was formed, waking from the depths of their hearts and enforced by brief yet fulfilling encounters.

When dawn broke upon a violet sky, they met again. But circumstances had changed...
