Soul

Soul: Dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus)

Taxonomy: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Cetacea Family: Delphinidae Genus: Lagenorhynchus species: Lagenorhynchus obscurus
Habitat: Dusky dolphins are coastal dolphins found only in the Southern Hemisphere. The populations that we know of are found along the west, southern and southeastern coasts of South America, along the coast of South Africa and Namibia, and all around the South Island of New Zealand.

Description:
The dusky dolphin is a small cetacean that reaches about 2 m in length, and weighs 100 kg or less. The head slopes down from the blowhole to the snout and this species does not have a prominent beak. The tips of the snout and lower jaw are dark in color with a gray marking extending from the eye to the flipper. The dorsal fin is blunt and relatively straight. Dusky dolphins are dark blue-black in color on the tail and dorsal side. They have a dark band running diagonally across the flanks from the dorsal fin to the tailstock. They also have 2 white streaks that run diagonally from the tail to the base of dorsal fin. The ventral side is light gray to white in color and extends up the flanks somewhat.
Dusky dolphins look very similar to the Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens) of the Northern Hemisphere, and are in fact of the same taxonomic genus Lagenorhynchus.
Feeding Habits: Duskies in South America feed during the day by searching for schooling anchovy in small, scattered groups. When a group comes across a large school of anchovy, it performs a series of aerial displays that involve a loud slapping of their bodies on the surface of the water. This alerts the other dolphin groups, who immediately come to the area, and together the group of dolphins herds and tightens the school of fish into a tight “bait ball.” The dolphins then take turns swimming into the bait ball and eating the fish.
In Kaikoura, however, it’s a completely different story. Here, they feed at night on a fantastic group of organisms that make up the Deep Scattering Layer (DSL) of the ocean. During the day these organisms stay deep in the water column to avoid being seen and eaten by predators. At night, they rise much closer to the surface to feed.
Most predators have a hard time finding and catching the DSL organisms because it is dark, and many predators hunt by sight. Dolphins, however, navigate incredibly well in the dark using a technique called “echolocation.” By emitting frequent, high-pitched sounds that act as sonar, they can dive and feed on the DSL for much of the night. In the morning, they head back in closer to shore to rest and socialize.
Interesting facts:
Dusky dolphins are one of, if not the most, acrobatic of dolphins. Spectacular leaps, somersaults and side slaps are common, and are often repeated many times in succession by an individual animal.
Dusky dolphins are are a curious species; they favor bow riding and enjoy contact with boats and people. They are extremely agile swimmers and are known for their aerial acrobatics.
This gregarious species is also known to associate with other cetaceans. Its own group sizes vary according to the time of year, with larger numbers living together during the summer and in winter, small groups of about 20 individuals are common. In Argentina, dusky dolphins form schools of varying sizes with a range of 2-500 individuals. The average group size is around 100 dolphins. Interestingly, stable subgroups within a larger school have been observed indicating close inter-school relationships.

Guardian
Name: Lisirra Larkin Goes by: Lisi is fine. Age: 20-something Appearance: Messy light brown hair, usually pulled into a quick ponytail or bun. Blue eyes that are typically hidden behind glasses. Pale skin that rarely sees the sunlight, narrow face, small hands and skinny wrists. Apparel: Is typically seen wearing a turtleneck sweater and jeans with slip-on shoes, often carrying a handful of books. Interests: Botany, Shakespeare, classical literature, the Dewey Decimal system Occupation: Full-time assistant librarian, occasional tutor, amateur writer (she's never finished a single novel) Family: Lisi has a younger sister that she isn't close to and doesn't often see. She moved out of her parents' house a few years ago but will visit or call them every now and then. Personality: Quiet, terribly shy, well-read, reclusive, studious
Likes: Gardening, playing piano, reading, listening to classical music, playing with her dogs, an occasionally rainy day Dislikes: Cars, rap music, reality television shows, people who don't like libraries, talking on the phone Pets: Waltz, Blythe, Ciel, and Precious.
Lisi's life is probably how most people would define "boring." She lives alone in a small one-story Victorian with chipped yellow paint and gingerbread trim and spends most of her days reading, gardening in her backyard, or working at the library. She doesn't own a car because driving scares her, and instead bicycles herself around town.
She doesn't have a lot of money, but her parents are fairly well-off. After she graduated from a two-year program in a local college, her parents bought the house she lives in and helps her with the bills when she can't cover her expenses. But that rarely happens, since Lisi is such a spendthrift.
Lisi lived completely alone until a few months ago, when she wandered into a little shop and found these adorable dog-shaped slippers that she just had to have. Lo and behold, the strange things actually turned into real dogs. Somehow, this bit of magic didn't faze Lisi, and she loved them too much to get rid of them. The dogs have stayed with her ever since. They definitely add a little ounce of joy to this recluses' life; for other than them, she has no close friends. And since they don't seem to need food, that just makes them so much more enjoyable.
She is on good terms with her co-workers, and even one or two library enthusiasts, but it's usually pretty quiet where she works - after all, not many people go to the library anymore. However, there is this one guy who comes into the library every now and then. She has a little crush on him, but being too shy to approach him, she doesn't even know his name.

Home and Family Home:

Family: Waltz: The oldest of the four dogs, Waltz is playful and intelligent, the leader of the "pack." He's very social, and vocal when necessary. Blythe: The only female of the four, Blythe is an entergetic sweetheart, but she can rough house with the best of them. She's usually the first to put her head in your lap when you're feeling down. Ciel: The only angelic, Waltz's son. He's pretty cocky, but will back down whenever Waltz gets involved. He's also the most vain. His wings allow him to fly, but he is so big that he cannot fly more than a few feet off the ground for a few minutes; he uses this advantage to catch the ball or stick that the others are chasing. Precious: Precious is calmest of all, never barking or rough housing with the others. He is a serene dog, but he seems above it all; stately and almost regal. The jewel on his forehead catches the light and seems to calm others down. He rarely leaves Lisi's side; he is devoted to her.

Reese's Room
A very pretty trinket given to Reese by Elda-chan. She loves its shininess, but was more interested at first in the wrapping it came in. sweatdrop

Library
Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
-Max Ehrmann
---
maggie and milly and molly and may went down to the beach(to play one day)
and maggie discovered a shell that sang so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles, and
milly befriended a stranded star whose rays five languid fingers were;
and molly was chased by a horrible thing which raced sideways while blowing bubbles:and
may came home with a smooth round stone as small as a world and as large as alone.
For whatever we lose(like a you or a me) it's always ourselves we find in the sea
---
since feeling is first who pays any attention to the syntax of things will never wholly kiss you;
wholly to be a fool while Spring is in the world
my blood approves, and kisses are a far better fate than wisdom lady i swear by all flowers. Don't cry --the best gesture of my brain is less than your eyelids' flutter which says
we are for eachother: then laugh, leaning back in my arms for life's not a paragraph
And death i think is no parenthesis
---
you shall above all things be glad and young For if you're young, whatever life you wear
it will become you;and if you are glad whatever's living will yourself become. Girlboys may nothing more than boygirls need: i can entirely her only love
whose any mystery makes every man's flesh put space on;and his mind take off time
that you should ever think, may god forbid and (in his mercy) your true lover spare: for that way knowledge lies, the foetal grave called progress, and negation's dead undoom.
I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance
