Great bit of information there. 3nodding
A note on the part of gamers being rewarded for being violent: I think perhaps that's why Metal Gear Solid seems to be popular with both sexes. It doesn't really reward people for being violent, in fact usually the special items are given to people who can defeat the entire game with the tranq gun, and of course the emphasis is on avoiding battles rather than engaging them.
Also a neat bit of research that a friend of mine did. . . He was looking into what percentage of online gamers are male and which is female. He came up with a staggering 70% of online gamers being female. Granted I don't know how accurate his research is, but it's still quite interesting.

Funny. I majored in Game Art and Design (now majoring in Illustration) and the women in the gaming industry is very, very low. Colleges almost cater to the females, as it's mostly male dominated.
Women can bring great ideas to the table, as men can. It's just that some women don't WANT to get into the field, simply because they feel they will be shunned or outcast.

Sad, but true. Though, like a girl in any engineering class, they're sure to get the most attention...which is a good thing. I work at a particular game company and I concur...the ladies need to come on over and represent. It's definitely an uphill battle, but in such a male dominated industry, the trick is to be crafty and advantageous.

I know the Art School I've been looking into is really looking for girls to sign up for the Game Design courses. Once I let them know that I was interested in it, they haven't stopped sending me things. whee Which is fine, I really want to go there. They also offer special scholarships for girls going into that field (aptly called the "Girl Gamer Scholarship" ^.^ )

Women can bring great ideas to the table, as men can. It's just that some women don't WANT to get into the field, simply because they feel they will be shunned or outcast. I graduated from Game art & Design in september and I garuntee there was no catering towards the females. Its the elitiste attitude that "Youre a girl, you shouldnt be here". And it gets REALLY tough to handle sometimes, with no support from some of your teachers and peers. Dont get me wrong, I had a lot of great friends, but being the only female in my class was difficult at times. I would agree that colleges try to reel more females in, because the industry is so saturated with males, but they really dont consider the quality of life that they are putting these girls into. I dont want to sound like some fem nazi here, but its just a fact that there should be some sort of support group for girls in the game industry. Until we reach a balance, or a basic acceptance from the guys that their "boys club" is not just for boys anymore, then its going to be a tough road for all of us. And Im not saying that there arent a lot of guys who do accept it, or companys for that matter, but believe me there are always those guys who have no respect for you or your artwork because they dont want to feel inferior. This happens in every work environment, not just the game industry.

I'm actually starting college all over again in Illustration, because AI basically ******** me over in terms of getting a job. It's a useless programme, hopefully you went elsewhere. As for the elitist thing, I didn't have problems. However, one of the other girls did. I'm sort of a "guy's kinda gal", and enjoy screwing around, playing fightings games, etc. I had made some good friends originally here and there. It wasn't until I won the Soul Calibur II tourniment the department hosted that a lot of them stopped treating me like an outsider, or a fragile petal. I just remember the first day I walked into the game 3D animation class, and one of the guys said "Are you lost? Graphic design is next door." I mentioned I was in the Game Art programme, and some of the guys eyes went wide like "OMG GIRL WHO PLAYZ VIDEO GAMES HOT!" So.. not sure! It's mixed.

xOpiatex I can relate to the article pretty well, but I must admit that a lot of the time I am attracted to the boy games. mad ^.^ "boy games" I suppose I'm attracted to them. . . don't know the difference between "girl games" though. . . unless it's like "Barbie Horse Adventure" That was a steaming pile of excrement. It's games like that that make girls not wanna play. If someone was like: "Oh hey, you're a girl, you'll like this" and shoves it in my face. . . first I'd kick them in the nads (assuming its a boy, if not. . . I'd think of something), then produce a bucket of all of my sister's Barbie heads that I ripped off when I was a wee lass. xd
I guess I'm just a tomboy though. I like "guy cartoons", "guy anime", "guy comics", "guy games", hell, I even refuse to do "girl push-ups" (I fail to see how that actually builds muscle. O.o
. . .
*cough* I'm done ranting.

I mentioned I was in the Game Art programme, and some of the guys eyes went wide like "OMG GIRL WHO PLAYZ VIDEO GAMES HOT!" So.. not sure! It's mixed. Um, yeah. I got it from AIPX.. In phoenix. And, I actually got hired at portfolio show...so... it wasnt very useless to me, or all of my friends who are working in the industry now, because they got hired too... Farsight, Rainbow, Viscious Cycle, Vicarious Visions, EA, SCE, Sierra, Blizzard, Never Soft, ArenaNet, Arush, Crystal Dynamics, Eidios. I have friends at each and every one of those companies. And have toured many of them as well. Just got back from Big Bear, where Farsight is, and my good friend Chris works. We stayed in his cabin and sled all weekend, but thats besides the point. (I would also love to get my masters in Illustration) Dont get me wrong, I hang out better with guys than with girls usually. I guess you just never encountered the "elitiste" attitude. You're lucky. Its very frequent at my old school. Its just the attitude as in "Hope we dont get in a group with Sarah..." "You cant play games!" Etc. When indeed I was top of my class in art, level and document design, and could hold myself up in our game wars tournaments. Some guys just wont admit a girl can do the same, or better than them. *small shrug*
