Seriously guys, nobody is worse then us.
We're so obsessed with our pairings, who's cutest, who's hottest, who's sweetest, blah blah blah.
Most people take delightful joy in ruining the series for other people.
We barely even talk about the moral standpoints of it.
Instead we talk about how squueeecute L is.

I know >< It's so much fun though! gonk And in the actual series, it's more about plot than characters. Because of that, we wanna talk more about the characters, I guess... plus they're all great.
PS: Near is more squeeeecute than L ninja

Well, I guess that's depending on the person (and the YGO fandom is JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST worse, if you ask me)
I, for one, like to discuss the moral standpoint, the plots and twists, and make quite in-depth character analyzations while talking to my DN-obsessed friends (our little group XD) Sure, I ofted squeal about L being cute and all, but I think I mix it pretty well.
But as said, it probably depends on the person.

I fell in love with Death Note for the plot and storyline but stayed for the lulz

It's a more mainstream series now, so that's basically what happens. Though if you think this is the worst fandom you've ever seen, I doubt you've seen many fandoms.

HEY. Don't say Death Note is the worst fandom, because there's much, much worse out there, especially with more mainstream series like Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha, etc.
But like you, I am pretty much disappointed with the fandom. I had entered it hoping that I might find some more intelligent people to discuss its themes and characters with, and was I disappointed. I don't mind fun fangirling and comedy once in a while, as long as there are deeper disscussions also, which I don't see too often. And what's worse, when we do have one, mostly everyone just posts their opnions and leave. We don't really get to see a debate, a geniune exchange of ideas-and given the moral ambiguity of Death Note, should be interesting to see others' point of view. It also kinda pisses me off, I love those discussions and tend to give my all giving a detailed answer as to why I think that way, and I barely get any replies. I've almost even resorted to playing my own devil's advocate on some issues.
I guess that's what you get when a series is popular. More people are likely to talk about the superficial aspects of it because it's easier rather than to give time to think about deeper issues. Well, hey, it could be worse-Death Note could be more popular like the series I've mentioned above and would not get any discussions at all, or it could have all the intellectual fans you want but not be very active at all. And both are bad, because Death Note, being such a good series, deserves more.
But from my knowledge, the LJ Death Note communities aren't so bad. People type better, and you can usually see a deep discussion once in a while.

It's just because there are so many bad threads(and good threadS) that get noticed.

Yu-Gi-Oh has a worse fandom, imo.
But maybe people do it specifically for Deathnote because it's a tad bit sad.

well... i think i blend in pretty well too... but it's true, now that i think about it, i liked death note because of it's unique and interesting plot... i do admit that i squeal for L, because i really can't resist him... but he's not the reason why i watched dn in the first place... he just increased my interest in the anime itself... i think i have it balanced, but i do agree that we need more intelligent conversations because, after all, death note is, in itself, brilliance... (i don't expect you to understand me but i'm really too lazy to explain... confused )

Naruto is easily the worst fandom out there, easily. It's not just about threads but about how saturated the Internet in general is with this fandom. I mean like, you can be playing an online RPG that has nothing to do with Naruto other than that there are ninjas in it. So all the people with ninja as their class are going around quoting Naruto ninjutsu to the point that everyone else is sick of hearing it. It's to the extent that I know what "kage bunshin no jutsu" does in Naruto despite the fact that I don't watch the anime, don't read the manga, don't play the video games, and don't participate threads that discuss it.
Sure Death Note discussions can be a bit WTF at times, but it's not like we're invading the Internet as a whole. (Besides, Light is far more squeeworthy than L can ever be... even though he's psychotic and evil and murderous and more psychotic.)
