Ana knew better than to wander off on her own, but there just wasn't anything to do around the house. She'd read all the books, played all the video games, and eaten most of the cake. She was bored. And since, after all, there was an entire world just outside her door, she'd decided to go exploring.

It wasn't terribly exciting so far.

"Hmm."

There were many strange things in Midori, but there were probably not any sights stranger than the site of a boy digging a whole in the side of a road. Or a sight that looked more suspicious.

However, the boy wasn't trying to hide a dead body or trying to dig up a dead body. Adrian actually was trying to recreate his beloved ditch. It was something he really didn't want to resort to, since it took far too much effort than just looking for his ditch, but he needed some sort of hole in the ground for his artistic inspiration.

You see, Adrian hadn't written a good emo poem in three days. The child Scent deduced that it wouldn't be too long before he started going outside and actually start enjoying the sunshine, or even worse - actually seek out company!

So he decided to create a temporary solution to his problem, but digging a large hole in the ground was harder than he thought. After a mere five minutes of "digging" (if one meant hitting the earth a few times in a half-hearted matter), Adrian promptly flopped down onto the ground.

"Digging takes so much energy. I hate effort!"
He whined. See, how could he properly whine if he spent all his energy digging?!

Ana came across the strange new boy as he complained to no one, or perhaps everyone. She paused, looking him over with pity and interest.

"Why are you digging?" she asked politely, head tilting to one side. "Do you need to hide something? 'Cause you could just flush it. That works really good...unless you need whatever you're trying to hide and you can't get it back once you've flushed it."

As always, Adrian had managed to attract another stranger. What was it with him sulking on the side of the road and people just coming up to him, thinking that he wanted their company?

However, Adrian decided to let her stay. Maybe she would offer to buy him a drink too. He was feeling thirsty.

"I'm not trying to hide something! I'm digging myself a new ditch so I won't be bothered by random people!" Adrian frowned, rolling away from the girl. She didn't look like she had much money on her, so he guessed she wasn't going to offer him anything. Too bad, he wanted another Green Tea Frappe.

"Sounds exciting," Ana said dryly, bristling slightly at Adrian's tone. She'd only been curious. More out of spite than anything, she sat down near the boy and eyed him mildly. "If you're gonna be so conspicuous, people're gonna notice you, you realize."

Why wasn't she going away yet? Adrian had thought that she would have gotten the hint that he didn't want company. People were so annoying. He wanted to go back in the shop. But the stupid fat cow was there, and she was going to ask him what he was doing with the shovel and Adrian didn't have the energy to lie because he was wasting it talking to this annoying girl.

Augh!

"I'm not being con... con... whatever that word is, I'm just trying to dig my ditch!" Adrian moaned, covering his face with his hoodie. Maybe if he hid from her, she would get bored and move.

"Conspicuous," Anastasia repeated smoothly. "As in, drawing attention to oneself. And you haven't gotten very far, have you. I could help you if you like."

She wondered why the boy wanted to hide in a ditch, rather than somewhere more comfortable like up a tree or under a bed. But then, maybe Ana was missing out on the appeal of ditches. If there was any to be had, anyway.

He really wasn't liking this girl! She couldn't understand the ditch. No one could understand the ditch! People looked at it and saw a hole in the ground. Adrian looked at it and found a hole in the ground that he could sit in. There was a major difference!

"I don't NEED -" Adrian was about to whine, but then he stopped and thought about it. If she was offering to help... why not? She wouldn't understand the ditch, but at least he wouldn't have to waste so much effort on it.

"Ok, fine. You can help me dig, since you were so kind and offered." Adrian sat up, grinning and handing her the shovel. Of course, there was only one.

Hey, she shouldn't have offered if she didn't want to dig!

Feeling rather exasperated with herself for offering help, Ana took the shovel and eased it into the hard earth. It took a bit of effort and a few jumps on top of the metal spade to break through, but she did it.

"What's your name, anyway?" she asked, swinging around the shovel's handle like it was a firehouse pole, finding herself oddly entertained.

Since the girl took the shovel and made good on her word, Adrian found himself in a slightly better mood. He laid back down again, watching her with a bored expression and shifting away when he thought she was going to hit him in the face.

"Not that you'll ever see me again, but I'm Adrian," Adrian huffed, as if the very notion of giving out his name was ridiculous. "And you're supposed to be...?"

"Anastasia," Ana said, pushing her hair out of her face. "Ple-uh. Um. Yeah."

She'd nearly said 'pleased to meet you', which would have been a bit of a stretch. To cover for the awkward stumble, she dug out a great heap of soil and dumped it to the side, then forcing the spade back into the earth for a second helping.

Adrian either ignored or didn't notice Anastasia's attempts to be polite, which was good because he would have snorted at them and possibly annoyed the other Scent even more than she was already.

Although anything Adrian said tended to annoy people, like his following reply to her.

"That name is too long. I don't like long names, they're too ... long. I'm just gonna call you Ana," Adrian decided. Ana was nice and short and took the least amount of effort to say.

"It's not too long," Ana said rather sharply, feeling offended. She'd picked out the name herself, and personally she found it pretty. "But...that's fine. Everyone calls me Ana."

Taking a deep breath to calm the unexpected jab of irritation, she dumped another shovelful of dirt off to the side. Something wriggly caught her eye and she gave a delighted squawk as a millipede crawled dizzily out of the pile. She picked the little creature up, letting it amble along up her arm.

"It is too lo- OH MY GOD, THERE'S A BUG ON YOU!"

Adrian practically screeched at the sight of the millipede, backing away frantically. Yes, one should have expected the boy to have gotten used to bugs considering he was living in a ditch for three months, but he actually killed every bug he saw in there with an incredible vengeance. How could this girl just let one crawl on her arm like that?!

"What are you doing?! Kill it! Kill it!" Adrian flailed. Ugh, it was sickening just watching it!

Ana stared at Adrian, puzzled at the boy's reaction.

"Kill?" she said softly, looking at the millipede. It wiggled its little antennae at her in what she found to be a particularly cute manner. Instantly distrusting Adrian to act politely around the little creature, she brought her arm closer to her chest, shielding the millipede from him. "Why would I kill him? He's just here minding his own business. Besides, this kind eats plants. Centipedes are the mean ones."

Disgruntled with Adrian's seeming disregard for how sweet the little bug was, she set it on the ground and waved as it trooped away on its hundred tiny feet, and took up the shovel again to continue digging the boy's ditch.

"Honestly," she said sharply. "Why on earth would you tell me to do such a thing?"
