I found an interesting phenomenon called a Radiant Boy. Basically they are the spirits of boys who were murdered by their parents. If they are seen they are said to herald a violent death. But there is a twist to it....

I own a copy of Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits. XD It's a bloodly good book for research and if it wasn't at the bottom of boxes I would so be re-reading it.

Radiant Boys are very interesting as they don't seem to have a history to them in the places they haunt. I don't mean a history of haunts but more of their lives. The article says that the boys were murdered by their mothers but if I remember there is rarely any records of this.

As I said my book is in a box at the moment so i may be wrong. I'll check later.

On that note, I've always heard that a bird getting inside the house was a harbinger of death. Whether that's the living space or just anywhere in the house (like the attic) I'm not sure, but I'd go for the living space.
