I've heard this idea a lot. 3nodding

I used to have an imaginary friend named Kalki when I was really young. He disappeared when I was around seven, though. My mum was really nice about it and didn't tell me he wasn't real, which I'm grateful for. Several years later in college, I ran across that name again. eek

Just as a random note: The original belief of spirit guides were narrowed down to animals only. I've heard some cases lately of spirit guides that are not animals, but I guess ya flow with the times on that one? I still believe that a true spirit guide would be an animal here on our plane of existance for multiple reasons, so I'd be biased to say that has an influence on spirit guide vs. imaginary friend.

But anywho...

I suppose a big tell point would be what the imaginary friend did. Spirit guides help the person out and lead them to important decisions in their life. Imaginary friends are fun to play with and blame things on. Being that, spirit guides have a sense of comfort and strength, something to turn to when you're upset. And imaginary friend is someone to play with when you're bored and lonely or just want to ramble on about something unimportant. It'd be something you'd have to remember. Was it something you saw, or something you imagined? But the older you get, the more memory you loose in such cases, so I can see why it'd be difficult to determine.

I don't remember mine at all because I was waaaaay little, I just know the stories my parents told me. And apparently, he was a messy monkey and always did the bad things and I got blamed for them and had to clean up after him. A bit of irony on that: The Chinese zodiac sign that I'm supposed to stay far, far away from is Monkey. xd Go figure.

Vixen, I'm sorry that you don't like those born in the year of the monkey. We can be great fun! But, back to the subject at hand. Spirit guides are just that... those who guide you. Maybe sometime, you need to be guided into having fun, or thinking that you're accepted. So, sure, yea, I guess that imaginary friends, to some degree could be spirit guides.

I think you're thinking of a familiar... Spirit guides take the form of what they wanna be. Holy christwagons! they could even be in the form of my water bottle and I wouldn't know it. LOL

Familiars are originally Pagan and became popular through Wicca. Spirit Guides were originally Native American. Which is why I view it the way I do. Biased in blood, maybe? I dunno. I don't have THAT much Cherokee in me, but I have enough.

Ok, anthropology kicking in so bear with me. The ideas of familar spirits, spirit guides, and the like are not found in just one specific culture, rather, you find them all over. If you have a culture that has a belief in spirits or animism, you are going to find concepts of spirit guides, family totem spirits, etc.

As for spirit guides only being animals, that may be true for some cultures (plains Native Americans) but its not true for all of them. In different cultures, spirit guides or guardian spirits may be animals, plants, elements, supernatural beings, even ancestor spirits.

Spirit Guides, in history, were animal based. India being the exception, as they didn't have to be animals, but weren't human. I'm not as clear on that one. I do know Egypt was strictly animal or spirit of an element. Now, I'm an old school kinda girl. I stick to the originals.

My outlooks on matters are formed from what I've learned and I enjoy learning. I research religions and spirituality for fun because I find it facinating. I'm not saying it's all set in stone, but I believe what I do for multiple reasons. Despite how much I am sure of things myself, it's still my oppinion. My path. My choice. I'm not trying to downplay anything originally said in this forum, just giving my thoughts and why I think them (the shortened version).

I understand you see things differently. I have no qualms with that. I was never here to say "I am right! You are wrong!" I was just here to offer my oppinion to the conversation. I'm sorry that you all are having a problem with that. I know that as time has passed subjects have evolved, but not everyone agrees. Not everyone can form a solid fact of things. That's fine. I just let it be and move about my own life with what works for me.

SO!

Since it seems to be an issue. Let me re-phase my original post into something that will be less conversational and thus less attacked.

"I guess they could be, depending on the situation. But that's all I'll say on the matter. biggrin "

What I meant by that was it's probably not blood-related at all. neutral
