I have a male Betta in a 10 gal tank, and his fins are horribly torn because he keeps resting by the intake of the water filterer. His fins get sucked up, and then they get rips in them when he swims away.

He hasnt been harmed by it other than that, but it just doesnt look too nice xp I'm new at aquarium keeping, so I dont know what I can and cant do that wont hurt the fish >.>

Any suggestions would be nice.

some filters have controls for how powerful the intake is so if your's has one try lowering the intakes power. another thing you can do is put something around the intake like i have sponge filters ziptied around the filters in my breeding tanks. if you would like some help with this i can offer a few places to buy them and how to do it.

good luck

you can also wrap it in panty hose and secure it with a plastic tie. Never use anything metal as it is toxic. Also to help it heal you can add a little bit of aquarium salt. the fins might not be whole again but at least it'll look a little less ragged. Are you sure it isn't fin rot? He might be doing that because something is irritating his fins.... Make sure your water is changed regularly even though you have a filter. About 10% (1 gal) once a week and then once a month make it a 50% (5 gal). Trust me they will Stay healthier. Just so you know I own four tanks..... 1 - 135 gal, 1 - 55 gal & 2 - 30gal. every other day I'm doing a water change on one of them but to see them happy and healthy is worth the effort.

Ive allready replyed to this queation in the MY BETA BABY topic but just in case, here it is again ^__^ "You could put a soft net around the filter intake to baffle the current( bettas long fins make it hard for them to swin agenst currents) and prevent damage to his fins. Also are you sure it is the filter that is damageing his fins?

There are many different ways a betta can damage its fins, be it on plastic plants, sharp bits of gravel, tail biting, or ripping them on sharp edges on caves and hidy-holes. If I had a pictue of the tank, I may be able to point out any other potentialy harmfull objects and help you keep your betta happy and healthy,

Also for the torn fins, be sure to keep his water extre clean with 50% watter changes every week and adding aquarium salt to prevent infection to the exposed tissue.

Being new to this guild, I shuld let every one kow that bettas are definatly my department as far as care, illnesses, genetics , behavior and the like. I also have a team in Bakersfield CA . We just got the forums up if any one would like to join .

Best of luck with your boy froggy06m
