Hey I'm like, in a dilemma.. I've been looking everywhere online, but haven't seen anything that says whether having a pet snake is Haraam..
the only thing I got is that one hadith, where Muhammad (s) said to kill any snake that gets in your house if it doesn't leave.. but thats like, wild poisonous snakes, not pet snakes, and only because they're dangerous. We get the same allowance to kill spiders, even though they're considered slightly sacred for how they made the web for the prophet..
So.. does anyone know?

I THINK, in Islam, the whole idea of having a pet is...wrong. You know, the concept of "caging" it up and keeping it away from it's natural enviornment and whatnot...but yet again, I'm not sure...I, myself, have two birds, but they aren't by any means caged up. They just sleep in there and eat. For the rest of the day they're free to roam anywhere in house, no one stops them. We even take them outside occasionally. They're very well trained and loving. They even fly back inside by theirselves if I leave them unattended for too long. xDDD
but of course, they crap everywhere, but I clean after them everyday. I don't mind at all...
...I think the fact that they poop anywhere randomly is another reason why we can't have pets...but eh. My babies aren't allowed to go in the room where we all pray, so it's all good, or so I think... D:

Many of the Sahabah had pets.. Cats and birds etc... And the prophet never scolded them for it.
I think the basic premise is that, as long as you give it all the care it needs and would be giving it a better life than it was living previously, then they would be allowed. For instance, I have my cockatiel in a huge macaw cage, and alternate between keeping her outside and inside, so she's got plenty of space. Also, I have a goldfish, but I don't keep it in a deathbowl; I have it alone in a 10 gal with uber over-filtration, and am hoping to upgrade to a 60 gal or something so I can get him 2 or 3 more goldie friends. I have pillbugs, and I always change their bedding and food properly and keep them in a cool, dark place.
I would do the same for the snake.. although, in the beginning, I wouldn't get him the recommended 30 gal.. probably a 10-20 gal, then upgrade later, since I don't have space at the moment but would be willing to upgrade.
The issue I have is that there's that story about how shaitan got into heaven to fool adam + eve within the mouth of a snake.. are the rest of the snakes cursed then? I'm not sure.. I'm hoping not..

Thats interesting, I never actually thought about that. The fact that having a pet snake might be haram. I'm not sure. But thats interesting.
I have no idea, but my common sense would tell me that it'd be ok to keep it so long as it doesn't try to harm you. Which is, ya know, the reason why it would be considered haram in the first place, lol.
I just asked my Mom and she said no it's not haram, aaand not to get a pet snake no matter what. xD

At work, we got in this ADORABLE little ball python.. like, his head is an inch long, and when I'm not doing anything, me and this other girl always go to the reptile habitats and hold the snakes we like. The python is so mellow.. and I heard that, of all constrictors/pythons, they are the least expensive and also grow the least.. I think it was like, 6 ft their max size.. maybe less. I doubt I'll be able to get it.. but I'd love to get one in the future. Maybe I could smuggle on in college.. hide the tank under my bed.. xDDD

I also looked up whether there have ever been pet python attacks.. One happened because the guy didn't put the snake back into his cage and just went to sleep.. it started choking him in the night because it was dark and it couldn't see.. it wasn't a ball python, though.. it was a much bigger burmese python. I also heard another one.. but that's because this guy forgot to take one snake out of his 2-snake cage when he decided to feed his giant python.. and the 2nd snake tried to eat the food too and he tried to stop the struggle, blahblah and the snake chased him and he got out okay. That wasn't a ball python either.
Basically, it's common sense; I understand that snakes are wild animals, even a little so when they're captive bred. So I would definitely take the obvious precautions... To escape-proof his tank, to make sure to feed him only when he's alone in his tank, to put him away whenever I'm going to go do something else where I can't keep an eye on him, etc. etc..
I keep looking on the internet for answers, but I always get both side of the extremes:
-One side, which says "the Prophet (s) commanded us to kill the snakes so we cant keep them as pets." -_- Cmon.. he obviously means wild ones that get into your house to kill you. That's no valid reason.. plus, there were no constrictors over where the Prophet (s) was.. only poisonous snakes. I wouldn't get a poisonous snake, there's reason in that. And if that's their argument.. that we can't keep them cos they harm us.. then I guess we can't also keep birds, horses, camels, or any other animal. A large bird, like a falcon or parrot, could poke our eyes out, break our bones, etc. Horses + camels could kill us in a much wider myriad of ways. HOWEVER, they won't if you use common sense and educate yourself on the risks before getting the animal.
-Then there's the other side, which says that Hadith is b.s. that was fabricated by the evil sahabah. Uh?
So I'm thinking it IS halaal to keep them.. What I'm really looking for is any command in the Quran that clearly declares snakes unholy. But then again.. none of the animals Allah has created was ever considered unholy. Dogs are considered dirty.. but not unholy or anything. Its not haraam to take care of them, feed one if they look like they're starving etc.
I think I'm getting that snakie.. domokun *convinced self, almost*

In some states it's illegal to have certain pets but if your local pet store has snakes then I guess they won't be illegal. We once had a hedgehog or porcupine (forgot which one) at the pet store for $100. In some states, it's illegal to have them as pets so look into what your state laws are.

Once a child gets attacked, its over for snake owners..

That reminds me of this video I saw... this family had a huge snake and they had a little kid and they were "friends" and then in the video, the snake opens it's mouth to eat the kid and that's where the video ends... I hope that kid was okay and they put that snake in zoo or something. D<

Well, still haven't found anything incriminating against pet snakes.
I wonder, is it a good deed to keep a pet spider and take good care of it? Since spiders are the ones that spun the Web in front of Muhammad's (s) hiding cave opening..
I was thinking of a pet tarantula, also, since I bought a 10 gallon reptile terrarium for 3 bucks at a garage sale, but after reading how it's not advised to handle them much, and that their bites are like bee stings, I'm thinking it's not worth the effort.. but just a thought. xD
