One silver eye popped open with the first rays of dawn. The creature to whom the eye belonged stretched out his body, shaking out a brilliant blue mane and tail, waiting patiently. The sun was just starting to rise, causing the sky to turn a deep purple in the predawn. The stallion gave a lazy grin and moved to his feet, waiting patiently for the smaller figure to appear.
His name was Kishi, and he was new (ish) to the area. His brother, Ohanzee, had come here quite a while before, and when their father had passed, Kishi had followed him, intent on finding his mother and brother. Instead, he had found his mother was dead. His brother was alive though, and so Kishi had followed him back to where he was staying. Whereupon, Kishi had discovered loveliness.
Mares. Everywhere he turned, mares. Blue mares, black mares, pink mares, brown mares, mares the color of the rainbow. Mares with hats, mares with clothes, mares that would rather eat him than look at him.
And Kishi LOVED mares.
One in particular had caught his fancy. Her name was Selene, and she was a mother of two. One was a mare. One was a strange stallion Selene said she’d not met since he was a foal. It was fine that she had foals. Quite alright. At least her partner for their conception wasn’t in his way. Kishi hated fighting. Unless it was with Selene. She was fun to pick on, and fun to fight with. While she did look similar to him in some ways, it only amused him further. Who could have known that he would have wandered into a mare that would match him so very well?
And just because she was his favorite didn’t mean he had to be with her and her only. He also enjoyed spending time with the mare known as Echo, likely because of her queer affliction that made it hard for her to speak. Which was fine. Kishi didn’t mind talking enough for the two of them. Or, rather, depending, not speaking. Echo’s boy toy didn’t like it much though when Kishi spent time with Echo.
But that wasn’t the point of why Kishi was out at this unholy hour. The reason was Selene.

Selene really was a night mare. Take that as one would. Blue and gold, and decorated with the moon and the stars. But she had two times of day that were her favorite. Sunrise, and sunset. Like so many of her friends, she was primarily nocturnal, though she had been known to be up and about during the day. Lately, early morning walks along the beach had become a morning ritual of hers. She usually chose to share them with her daughter, Yue Shuang.
She followed the river, heading for the place where it met the ocean. It was just the easiest, most pleasant way to get there without having to take to the air. Her hair was so long, she didn’t fly unless she either had to, or had her hair pulled up, which she usually got the two-legger to do.
She noticed the dark stallion standing by the river's edge with a scowl. Such a troublesome stallion. Annoying, Impudent, Arrogant. And in his own way, charming. And rather attractive, which she supposed lent to his arrogance. "What are you doing here?" she snapped, when he was within earshot of herself. "Don't you have anything better to do than harass me this early in the morning?"

He saw her coming, and grinned. One carefully calculated to annoy her. Which is likely why she snapped at him, he mused. He moved closer to her, pulling along and lowering his mouth close to one velvet ear. “Good morning. Why do you think I would have anything better to do in the mornings than spend time with a glorious ray of sunshine such as yourself?” he looked genuinely shocked, rubbing his nose boldly against her neck, nuzzling her. “I do hope you slept well.”

She jerked away from the deep voice and the warm nose, casting a glare up at the stallion. “Passably.” she agreed finally, taking a step away. She didn’t want to have to deal with him this early in the morning! He made her twitchy, nervous and angry. He was a flirt and a tease. But he did it all with those serious eyes of his, that made it not seem as much of a joke as it should be. Especially considering he was about as interested in a serious relationship as she herself was- which is to say, not at all.

He let her pull away, grinning. Really, Selene was too cute. She was attractive, fun to tease, and wasn’t threatening at all. Certainly a wonderful place to start his conquests- if only she weren’t so hard to win. “So, beautiful, where are we off to this fine predawn?” he asked, moving up next to her again, pressing against her smaller frame. He looked down at her with a grin, batting his eyes at her.

She gave him a cool, blank look. "Away from you, I hope." she grumbled, and continued past him, head high in the air. Such an annoyance in the morning. She felt like her insides were being squeezed.
In some ways, he made her think of Forrest. He clung, but unlike Forrest, she hadn't given him a reason to. She'd let him know she found him attractive, she supposed, but that didn't mean she wanted him to harass her! And that was what Kishi had been doing as of light. And it made her very, very twitchy.
He was funny. He made her laugh. And she liked him... but he seemed to think she liked him in another way. Really... what was it about stallions that made them so very...
Annoying.
With the exception of a select few. She loved Safi. And Rahu. And Calamity. And her baby boys, of course. But they were all family (or interested in other stallions) and didn't bother her. But even the ones who weren't molesters were annoying. Like Ohanzee- he made her angry. And Duo, who was annoying because he never, ever shut up! Khalon, who was a sexist brute- how did Echo stand him?!

Kishi pouted and snuck closer to her, gripping her in a friendly hug. "Aww, don't be that way Leney my dear." he teased. "I just want to be close to you." he gave her his most innocent eyes. "So you can protect me from all of those scary beasts who live near the river." he nodded, mouth twitching with amusement. "And admit it, Leney. You think I am adorable."

She tried to shake off the larger stallion with a n** at his nose. "I will admit to an obscene desire to kick you in the nose." she said, giving him the same big eyes he was treating her to. "But beyond that... no, I can't say I have any thoughts about you."
And if he needed her to protect him from a few crabs and jellyfish, he was even worse off than she had thought. "Now, if you will excuse me, my daughter and I were meeting on the beach for a morning flight."

He clung to her obstinately. "If it were you to kick me, Leney, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt at all." but goodness, her words did. "You don't like me then?" he looked hurt, and let her go, pulling back to give her moony eyes. "That's sad, because I really like you."
... Try manipulation. She was soft, maybe that would do her in? He rather doubted it, judging by the way she'd treated Forrest, according to what rumor said. Of course, teepee rumor had her labeled as a cold-hearted mare who only used stallions for their genes. But that wasn't a problem at all. He was just her kind of guy! Love them and leave them alone.

She scowled at him. Was he mocking her? That rat horse, how dare he?! “I hate you.” she snapped firmly. “You remind me of my ex, all clingy and obsessive. I don’t care if you like me or not, why don’t you treat me like you treat other mares. I hate special attention, and I know you only want to play around, don’t you.” her golden gaze was level. “Don’t try and make a mare feel special, like she is the only one for you, when it’s not in your personality or hers. That’s just sick. At least Forrest meant it.” She continued on her way, now that she was free.

Kishi watched her go, silver eyes narrow. Hmmm. Well, at least she’d given him a little bit to go on. “So… you don’t like feeling special? If I just came up to you, and said that I wanted to do something naughty to you…” he let his sentence trail off and watched her expectantly.

“I’d kick you.” Selene’s voice was blunt. “But I would respect you more than if you lied about how you felt.”

Well that didn’t help at all. Right now, Kishi was feeling about 3 inches tall. She looked so imposing, glaring up her nose at him like that.
… it was oddly adorable. Kishi did so love mares.
“You realize that most mares do like to feel special, right?”

“You realize no one likes to be lied to. Stick to the simple things, and don’t tell a mare you like her when you only want to do -that-”
