Okay, I don't know the typical lineup for marching at most schools, but this is ours.
Drum Major Majorettes Flag corps trumpets mellophones baritones trombones percussion sousas saxes clarinets flutes In that order
So, we have 5 mellophones, so my BD put one of them (freshman) way in back with the saxes. I've never heard of that before, and I think it's stupid. There are only 3 people in the trumpet row RIGHT IN FRONT OF US! I mean, really, why is it better to have one mellophone in the back with saxes when she could be right in front of us.
What's your opinion? Is this really not that uncommon? Your similar experiences? etc.

I think it's uncommon, because no school around my area that I know of has mellophones.

. . Our lineup...kinda changes, depending on what we're performing.
We have mello's, but no majorettes. I think our BD's our prejudiced. D< Not without reason; all the guys they choose are scarily fit and lean. o.o
If the lineup is to get into a block, it might be because the eventual result puts the mello player in his or her right spot. Or maybe that mello's really just that bad. D=
I don't think it should earn too much concern, however. s n o w

Might be for appearance. Is this the lineup for a parade block? It could be just how symmetrical everything is to the audience.
Mello and Alto parts are usually pretty similar. I kinda find it odd that they're not closer together.
Our lineup:
Colorguard Center Podium Drum Major Flutes Clarinets Alto saxes Mellos Battery percussion Side Podium Drum Major Trumpets Tenor saxes Trumbones/Baritones Tubas/Bari sax

My freshman year, me and one other clarinet were with the flutes for all but 6 sets of the entire show. We were lovingly called the "Flarinets". Although, our parts were also really similar in the music (the show was King Kong) so it wasn't too much of a stretch.

Actually, a sax and mello combination is not as rare as you think. The sections are usually combined in the band I'm in. They have just about the same music. It's not that bad sounding because they round off each other's tones.

I wouldn't put the trumpets very high in our lineup... They aren't the favorite section and sadly I am in there with them. But I would say that Flugelhorns would be way at the top if our jerk of a director didn't take them out of this years show!!! Everyone loves the flugelhorns, and I used to play it too, but Bree was the best person ever and she played flugelhorn. Just to say how much we love Bree and the flugelhorns, our band motto is "I love Bree".
SOOOOOOOOOOOO... Bree Robert Flugels Drum Majors Marching Staff/Directors Everybody else Trumpets!!!

Ours lineup is: color guard Drum Major Piccolo Flutes Clarinets!!!! Alto Saxes Tenor Sax Bari Sax Mellos Tubas Trombones Trumpets
Our trumpets suck, and play super loud, so we tend to put them as far back as possible.

Color Guard Drum major Flutes/Piccolos Clarinets Saxaphones (altos only usually) Trumpets Low brass (we lump the baritones, barry saxes, and the trombone in here....the tenor sax too, when we had one) Tubas Percussion
Although the guard has occasionally marched behind the percussion, and the drum major & assistant were on the sides for our Disney performance. Outside of parades tho, we tended to swicth between section clumping and meshing the entire band.

Also, sometimes to make our Tuba section look bigger (this is only at football games) we have the band directors put on a Tuba and march.
