~~ DEITY ~~ Name: Host: Alva Hrith Influential Domain: Underworld - (protector of the untimely dead & Warrirors.) Diety Concept's Gender: Female Jewel Appearance: Black granite Skin: Black as the granite stone she will emerge from. Eyes: Pale blue Hair: White and flowing Wings (if any): None The Deity: Within the Underworld, beyond the halls of judgement and the flowing rivers, across harsh terrain unreachable by any but the most determined lies Hel’s realm. Those that make it there are rewarded with rolling hills, soaring mountains and the magnificent hall of Valhalla. Hel’s paradise exists between death and rebirth, the souls of children and the restless dead often end up in the groves and grasslands to rest and find peace before they are ready to move on to their next life. Those souls who chose not to be reborn also may find home there, it is a paradise where no soul should want for anything. Those who die in battle and honoured heroes are brought to the halls of Valhalla home of the Valkyries. Here they may spend the rest of their afterlife in a joyous retirement, feasting, drinking and sharing stories of their battles and quests. Rebirth is of course available to those who wish to accept it. To some mortals Hel is a benevolent deity, a protector of the innocent dead. Parents of deceased children may leave offerings to her. To warriors she is what is to come, the inevitable. They would look to her to protect them in the afterlife and carry symbols and tokens into battle. She is a flamboyant goddess, happy, raucous and kind. She likes a party and was probably the driving force behind the celebrations of The Day of the Dead. She is also a fierce protector and will fight to uphold the honour and sanctity of the Underworld and the Pantheon.. She helps lead the Valkyries into war and has a fierce battle cry. Her relationship with Nergal would be like many brothers and sisters, probably love/hate. Though she would aid him in his work an act as a secondary judge if need be.

= POST GEHENNA ROLE = With the coming of gehenna lost souls consume the world. People are looking for solace and comfort in this time of grieving. A place for their deceased loved ones to be cared for. With Nergal's full rebirth the Underworld is begining to take shape and as much as he likes to think he can cope, it's a big job. It seems like the perfect time for his little sister Val, female underworld to come back into play ... after all, no man is an Island. *update*
Nergal is missing, perhaps consumed, no one knows. It has become more important for Hel to be reborn to ensure the work of the Spirit Guide and the other Underworld related deities can continue as worlds are rebuilt. In Nergal's absence Hel can act as judge and protector of the Underworld, allowing the safe passage of souls to rebirth.
The army of Valkyria is growing, though with Valhalla fallen and faded they have no place of their own, nowhere to lead the fallen warriors to glory.

= AND HER HOST = Alva is of the Hrith Family of the borderlands. The Hriths are a well known and respected Reiver family. Raiders. They rule the Eastern coast of the border, offering protection to villages from other Reivers... for a price. Used to the harsh, untamed wilds of the North they remain largely unaffected by the destruction of Gehenna. As plague ravages the villages food grows scarce but they survive, when War comes they thrive off it, relish the challenge. In the wake of Gehenna there was little food, many of the villages gone, the people with them. There were few left among the Reivers, some sought out their rivals, looking for help and support in desperate times. Some were accepted, some killed. The Hrith accepted those that sought them out, built their ranks up with one goal, to take the borderlands for themselves. Alva, follows her brother Bran and the sons of two other families, riding out to the west to take what is left.

= The Journey of the Gem = Since the fading Val's gem has been in posession of Sanngrior, a Valkyrie. Like all the Valkyrie she has no memory of who she was. The only life in her memory is that of a servant and warrior of the Hrith family. They have called her Iyes. As she remembers who and what she is she will remember the gem she holds. Alva will take the gem willingly to aid the birth of her goddess. A sacrifice.

Quote: HEL: Hel is the Germanic goddess of the dead and ruler of NIFLHEIM, a brutal underworld. She is the daughter of the trickster god LOKI and is depicted as half human and half rotting corpse. Hel's palace is called Sleetcold, and her kingdom is an icy, barren wasteland. Some legends claim that in the underworld, Hel feasts on human flesh. Hel's kingdom is surrounded by steep walls that are impassable to the living. (The word Hel means "concealed.") It is entered through GNIPAHELLI, a dank, foul-smelling cave. The fortress of Sleetcold lies on the other side of Echoing Bridge, a treacherous passageway to the land of spirits. Souls are challenged and assaulted as they try to cross. The gates of Hel's realm are guarded by GARM, a fierce dog who devours trespassers. Some spirits of the dead are ferried to Hel by the messenger Hermodr. At the lowest level of her kingdom lives a monster named Nidhoggr (corpse tearer). He punishes the wicked by eternally gnawing on their broken bodies. In some tales, the damned are boiled in huge caldrons before being fed to the beast. (o)
Quote: YAMBE-AKKA: Yambe-akka (Jameakka, Jabmeanimo) is the goddess of death and the underworld of the Lapps of Scandinavia. A fearsome hag whose name means "old woman of the dead," Yambe-akka offers solace to the souls of children who die in infancy. Though most of her realm dwell in sorrow, the spirits of lost babes are soothed and comforted by Yambe-akka. Her sanctuary for these infants is similar to the Christian notion of LIMBO. (p)
Quote: bEreškigal: Ereškigal, whose name can be translated 'Queen of the Great Below', is also known in Akkadian as Allatu. She is the goddess who rules the underworld, mother of the goddess Nungal and, by Enlil, of the god Namtar, who serves as her messenger and minister. Ereškigal's first husband was the god Gugal-ana, whose name probably originally meant 'canal inspector of An' and who may therefore have been identical with Ennugi. In the Sumerian poem 'Inana's Descent to the Underworld', Inana tries to gain entry to the underworld by claiming that she has come to attend the funeral rites of Gugal-ana, the 'husband of my elder sister Ereškigal'. The son of Ereškigal and Gugal-ana was the god Ninazu. In another tradition, Ereškigal married the god Nergal, as related in the poem 'Nergal and Ereškigal'. Ereškigal lived in a palace located at Ganzir, the doorway to the underworld, protected by seven gates, all of which could be bolted and each of which was guarded by a porter. (r)
Quote: Ala: The Ibo of eastern Nigeria believe in Ala, the melancholy goddess of the underworld. She is the child of Mother Earth goddess Chuku. In addition to ruling the land of the dead, Ala is overseer of the harvest and of fertility. The deity combines elements of both natural and supernatural worlds as the eternal guardian of deceased spirits. When a person dies, Ala takes the soul into her womb. The spirit feels no pain or torture but must endure a monotonous existence without the joys of earthly life. Souls in the care of Ala are legthargic, nebulous beings without the freedom and individuality they knew before death. They are similar in description to SHADES, the sullen souls of Greek myth. (o)
Quote: Yambe-Akka or Jabme-akka is a Sami goddess of the underworld. Her name means 'The Old Woman of the Dead'. Spirits of lost babies are soothed and comforted by her, but all other spirits dwell in sorrow. The land of the dead is said to be a mirror of the land of the living where everything is the opposite. So, the dead are buried with the essentials of living (e.g. knives) and anything that would make their afterlife better
