User Image Brynhilda Dillingham, Headmistress

Professor Dillingham sat in her high backed chair at the center of the Staff table, which stood at the very front of The Great Hall. As the older students filed in and sat at their House tables, Brynhilda smiled with great pride. Students were chattering and rustling about, and after several moments of chaos and once every student had come and sat at their tables, the Headmistress stood up. Once again, pointing her wand at her throat she mumbled:

Sonorus! Welcome students! To another year filled with magical education and knowledge, adventure and excitement! Please, let us settle down whilst we sort our first years and our transferred students. Accio, Sorting Hat!

The Sorting Hat soared into The Great Hall through a window. Professor Brynhilda caught it in mid air and rested it on a stool in front of the Staff Table. She looked to the older lady who stood at the doors of the Great Hall, and waved her hand. The headmistress took her seat while several older students were escorted to the front of the Great Hall.

Professor Ruby Philomela, Transfiguration

Professor Philomela greeted the students, first years and transfers together. She had been teaching Transfiguration at Hogwarts for 20 years, since Minerva McGonagall left the post to become Headmistress. Soon it would be her turn to retire, and she was sad to know that this would be the last group she'd be sorting. She forced a smile upon her lined face and gestured for students to step forward.

Alright, transfers first. You'll follow me, single file, right to the front of the Hall. When I call your name, you'll take your place upon the stool and put the Sorting Hat on. It'll sort you into a house, and you'll leave the stool to sit at your house table. Understood?

As all the students lined up, the Professor announced

Ready now?

They began the march up the Great Hall. Professor Philomela took her place to the right of the stool and unravelled her parchment while the Sorting Hat recited its song.

As Professor Philomela placed the Sorting Hat on the stool, it began it's ritual recitement of "The Sorting Song"

In times of old, when I was new,
And Hogwarts barely started,
The founders of our noble school
Thought never to be parted.
United by a common goal,
They had the selfsame yearning
To make the world's best magic school
And pass along their learning.
"Together we will build and teach"
The four good friends decided.
And never did they dream that they
Might some day be divided.
For were there such friends anywhere
As Slytherin and Gryffindor?
Unless it was the second pair
Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw,
So how could it have gone so wrong?
How could such friendships fail?
Why, I was there, so I can tell
The whole sad, sorry tale.
Said Slytherin, "We'll teach just those
Whose ancestry's purest."
Said Ravenclaw, "We'll teach those whose
Intelligence is surest"
Said Gryffindor, "We'll teach all those
With brave deeds to their name."
Said Hufflepuff, "I'll teach the lot
And treat them just the same"
These differences caused little strife,
When first they came to light.
For each of the four founders had
A house in which they might
Take only those they wanted so.
For instance, Slytherin
Took only pure-blood wizards
Of great cunning just like him.
And only those of sharpest mind
Were taught by Ravenclaw
While the bravest and the boldest
Went to daring Gryffindor.
Good Hufflepuff, she took the rest.
And taught them all she knew.
Thus, the houses and their founders
Maintained friendships firm and true.
So Hogwarts worked in harmony,
For several happy years.
But then discord crept among us
Feeding on all our faults and fears.
The Houses that, like pillars four
Had once held up our school
Now turned upon eachother and
Divided, sought to rule.
And for a while it seemed the school
Must meet an early end.
What with dueling and with fighting
And the clash of friend on friend.
And at last there came a morning
When old Slytherin departed
And though the fighting then died out,
He left us quite down-hearted.
And ever since the founders four
Were wittled down to three
Had the houses been united,
As they once were meant to be.
And now the sorting hat is here
And you all know the score:
I sort you into houses
Because that is what I'm for.
But this year I'll go further
Listen closely to my song.
Though condemned am I to split you,
Still I worry that it's wrong.
Though I must fulfill my duty
And must quarter every year,
Still I wonder whether sorting
May not bring the end I fear.
Oh know the perils, read the signs,
The warning history shows
For our Hogwarts is in danger,
From external deadly foes.
And we must unite inside her,
Or we'll crumble from within.
I have told you, I have warned you.
Let the sorting now begin.

At the Sorting Hat's completion of this song, many in the Great Hall noticed Professor Longbottom turn pale white. He would be the only one that knew, but this same song had been recited just after Lord Voldemort had risen to full power again. He quickly left the staff table and exited the Hall.

User Image Professor Neville Longbottom, Herbology

After hearing the Sorting Hat's song, Neville went flush. His stomach hit his throat. He felt as though he were about to vomit slugs, as Ron Weasley had once done. He stood up so quickly, he knocked his chair over. He rushed out of the Great Hall and through the door to the left of the staff table. This room was set aside for the staff of Hogwarts and their meetings. Neville fell into a rather cushy chair and was filled with thoughts of terror.

Merlin's Beard! That's the same song the hat recited when I went into 5th year! When You-Know-Who came back to power! Ohh...bad things are about to happen. Maybe I should send an owl off to Harry and see if his scar's been hurting, or anything strange like that. But that's impossible...Voldemort is dead! I saw it with my own two eyes! Oh my, what to do.

At that moment, the headmistress barged into the room with a loud crash. She looked very upset at the way Neville had rushed from the Great Hall.

User Image Brynhilda Dillingham, Headmistress

Feeling a mixture of concern for Professor Longbottom, anger for the performance the entire school had just witnessed and embarrassment for what would appear to be her inability to manage her staff, Brynhilda rushed after Neville. She stormed into the Staff Room and slammed the door behind her.

Neville, what in the name of good goat's guts was that all about? Do you realize, you appeared to be completely insane! The students, they'll have no respect ---

She looked into Neville's troubled face. She realized that he hadn't acted a fool at all, but something was direly wrong. She took a seat in the chair next to him.

Neville. What's the matter?

Neville was still pale as a ghost. Actually, Peeves looked rather lively in comparison. He was trembling. He looked at the Headmistress and took a deep breath, trying to gather his nerves.

A-a-a-apologies, Headmistress. Th-th-that song....same one....

He stopped and took another deep breath. He was very shaken.

I'm afraid we may not be safe. That's the same song the hat recited in my fifth year here. The year that Dolores Umbridge became our Headmistress. The year that no one believed You-Know-Who returned and no one believed...besides Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore. Something bad is coming.

Neville was afraid she'd have him sent off to the mental ward at St Mungo's. But Professor Dillingham looked at Neville with a sense of understanding.

Professor Dillingham remembered vividly those times. And because no one chose to believe the boy's story, the wizarding world faced great devastation. She vowed to herself she would not allow that to happen again.

Professor Longbottom, please, go to the owlery, send an owl off to Mr. Potter and the Weasleys. Do not let his children know, nor the children of Ms Granger & Mr Weasley. They all may be in very grave danger. Please contact Kingsley Shacklebolt, as well. I think he may be the only surviving member of the Order of the Phoenix. We must find out what is going on. I must go back to the Great Hall. For now, we'll keep this from the other staff.

Brynhilda took Neville's hand, and gave it a squeeze.

No need to fret, we're far better prepared than we once were. Believe me when I say, I will die, as Albus Dumbledore did, as Severus Snape did, if it means the best interest and safety of my students. We will not let tragedy take place here again.

She got up and walked out of the room, closing the door behind her.

Neville rushed off to his office and began penning letters to his old friends. He hoped that it wouldn't be long before he received a response. But he realized something.

I don't know if this will help, sending a letter to Harry. If it's got nothing to do with Voldemort....Harry won't have known a thing. But just in case, I better tell him. I don't want to worry he and Ginny...having their two boys here now. Oh my....

Neville quilled his letter to Kingsley first. It read:

Kingsley,

Strange happenings today at the Start of Term Feast. Hope you won't think I'm bonkers. The Sorting Hat recited the same song it recited when Voldemort returned to full power, in my fifth year. I fear something bad is about to happen.

Can you find out all you can about any potential Death Eater? Anyone who may have decided to follow Voldemort's steps.

Reply as soon as possible. Enclosed is a copy of what the Hat sang.

Neville Longbottom

Neville quilled out 3 copies of what the Sorting Hat recited, one for Shacklebolt, one for Harry & Ginny and one for Ron & Hermione. He quilled the same letter to the latter four.

Neville ran to the owlery, he tied the letters to the legs of the three strongest and largest birds he could find. Before sending the owls off, he told them
"Don't leave until they give you a letter to bring back. Off you go!"

The owls took off, and Neville returned to his office. He sat at his desk and began writing down potential evil forces they may be contending with sometime soon.

Professor Dillingham went back into the Great Hall and she stood at her place at the Staff table.

I'd like to interrupt quickly. Please excuse Professor Longbottom, he is feeling quite ill. Apparently he ate the wrong flavour of Bertie Bott's beans and it's sitting wrong. Back to business, now!

Brynhilda faked a grin, and waved to Professor Philomela to resume the sorting. Inside, her stomach felt as though it was boiling. She was scared, although she'd never admit it. She most certainly hoped that Shacklebolt or Potter or the Weasleys would be able to help.

May as well make the best of the time of peace we have left. No need to have everyone else worrying themselves into the infirmary.

She took her seat and watched the transferred students being sorted into their houses.

Looking rather irritated by the interruption, Professor Philomela began the Sorting Ritual.

Alrighty, we'll begin with the transferred students. First up, Aeryn Bristow! Take your place and put the hat on.

Aeryn heard her name called, and she walked up to the stool. She took her seat, and Professor Philomela placed the hat upon her head. The hat began talking to her almost instantly. She wondered if the rest of the school could hear.

Aeryn Bristow, Aeryn Bristow...new to Hogwarts. From Ireland, Carrickfergus, am I right? Well, well, well...you were very good at The Dark Arts, weren't you? Enjoyed them too...well that's a right to Slytherin there. But, you're also smart...a fast learner, you pride yourself on your knowledge. Of course, knowledge is power! Hmm...maybe we'll send you off to Ravenclaw. Ahh but you work hard too! Maybe Hufflepuff. A brave girl. Defender of the weak, leader to the lost...maybe Gryffindor. Oh what a dilemma...so many qualities of each house! I think...I think you're best suited for.......

Aeryn smiled and handed the hat back to Professor Philomela. She rushed over to the Ravenclaw table, adorned with blue and bronze banners and decorations. The students all wore blue and bronze ties and applauded the loudest of all. Before she took a seat, she looked around for Perenelle and Anna. How happy she was that she was placed in the same house as the two girls she had become friends with on the train.

User Image Sunny Higginson, 7th year

Sunny sat at the Gryffindor table quietly. Every year, the sorting seemed to get longer and longer.

Ugh why does this have to be soooo long. I'm famished!

Sunny looked over to the Slytherin table. She couldn't see Terri, but she saw the other Slytherins welcoming the newest members to the slimiest house of Hogwarts. How her best friend had become stuck there, she didn't know. Terri belonged in Gryffindor, or even Ravenclaw. Not Slimy Slytherin. Sunny looked to her right so see a younger student, Lily was her name, looking as bored as she herself felt.

Is it just me, or does this get longer every year?
