Okay, well I've been a lover of Lolita for awhile, and well I'd never actually looked at the prices, since well I knew nobody would buy me anything. Welll, I just went to the Baby website, and I picked a full outfit, except for a headdress, and a don't have bloomers. I almost died, it cost 799.00, not including taxes, and what it's going to cost to have it shipped here. x.x I seriously just felt my wallet grow lighter. And my checks for a couple of months slipping through my fingers.
I love lolita, especially Aristrocrat, Gothic, and Sweet lolita. But I know now that I seriously need to pick up my needle, and go buy me some material if I want a Lolita outfit any time soon.
Anyway, the whole point of this is to find out if any of you have had the same experience. Looked at the prices, and felt your dreams slipping away.
Also, I'm fifteen, so yeah~ I don't have like a certain amount every week/month.
[Haha my first post/thread ninja ]

You don't need to buy brand right off the bat. Also check out the livejournal EGL community for better prices.
Maybe take a look at the patterns from the how to make subforum if you can sew and make a few pieces yourself? My mom doesn't have the time to teach me but she made me bloomers and a nice petticoat.
Also think about building a wardrobe instead of one outfit at a time. Maybe get a one-piece dress to start out, but also get a white blouse and a black blouse, and other essentials for a variety of clothes.

-C'est la lune qui conduit la danse...-
LOL. I felt that way when I bought my BtSSB boots from Kinokuniya. D: 287 dollars disappeared... I still wonder what possessed me to buy those boots.
Oh well. xD I'm happy.

I once bought a pair of boots for about 300$ 292$, and I still can't understand why I did that. I wore them for about 7 months and then realized they were ugly. xd

MinaMouse: I know, but I was just looking for something for my first time out, like a special outfit~ I will, thank you. <3
Hmm, well I only know how to sew my hand, annnd it was just a simple stitch. I tear my clothes alot. Ooo that was nice of her, I may just ask my grandmother is for like Christmas or something she could make me something.
That's what I was thinking of doing, but like I said earlier, I wanted to finally have a a outfit to go out in. And just finally start dressing in Lolita.
Nanami.x.Yuki: Personally I don't mind walking, as long as it's not to far. Texas weather can get pretty hot, but lately it hasn't been to bad. Where do you live? I'd say try find a car that runs fine, but don't try to find that has like air condition, etc. You probably think I'm crazy, but you can get a car cheap if it doesn't have one.
Amanikitty: Wow 287 for shoes. x.x Hello Payless here I come. >>
Erotique Innocente: xD Aww, well I hope you were able to find good use of them.
By the way, if anyone knows someone who does a good custom job, but that doesn't cost me a arm and a leg could you tell me~

As was said before, try EGL comm sales. You can find a lot of really good deals if you're careful.
Also, post a "WTB: Commission" post on the community, describe your budget and what you want, and generally a few people respond with price quotes. You can also look into In the Starlight once their customs are open again; their custom work and replicas are far, far more impressive than most of their store items.
Other places to check out if you're not too picky about whether it's brand, a replica/knock-off, or whatnot are Fanplusfriend, Anna House [Prices are in Hong Kong dollars, you'll need a currency converter], and Candy Violet. CV and F+F are still going to cost you a bit, but nothing near what a full brand outfit would unless you find an awesome deal [which really is quite possible].
You can also look at Japanese auction sites and have a shopping service do the bids for you. I haven't tried this yet, since I can't read Japanese and yen prices tend to make me sit and do math for too long, but I know that there are many others who do so often.

I have the same expperiance ever single time I visit the site. I did buy a bow though, for about 50 dollars. It's suck adorable fabric! 3nodding
I do sew most of my clothes. Only bad thing is, if we lived in Japan, they seem to be very picky, and like to see name brand lolita outfits. Acording to a friend of mine, They don't usually accept you into full lolita-hood untill you do. crying

Buut I have no vague idea what my measurements are. ;---; A tailoring tape/measuring tape is very cheap and easy to find. Just check your local craft store and you should find one. If you don't feel like doing that, you can also use a piece of string, then measure the length with a ruler/carpenter's measuring tape. It's a bit round about, but still works okay.
Do you know how to take your measurements at all? Or just aren't sure what they are?

Exacto Knife boconnotto:
Thank you~ I think know how to take my bust measurements. And waist, but I'm not to sure. Other than that, I have no idea. Bust should be the fullest point [Usually at the nipples unless you've got some funky shaped boobs]. Waist is the smallest point, usually right at your belly button. Hips are about seven inches below that [usually the distance between your thumb and pinkie if you do the surfer thing with your hand so that those two fingers are the only ones up].
As for sleeves and lengths, that sometimes depends on the garment or the person making the garments [and in the case of skirts, whether you've got a big booty or not], so ask them how they want it done before you do it. (:
