I am curious to know what our female actors preferred to be called. I myself prefer actor, i find that when the term actress is used it's in derogtry way. This is just my opinon and Patricia Quinn said it best "any woman who says she is an actress has no respect for herself" again only opinion. So the question is do you have a preference or don't you care?

Not only does she have no respect for herself, but others won't take her seriously, either.

"Actress" tends to be a title for more glamorous wannabe stars than actual dedicated performers. Everyone I know who considers them an actress isn't serious about the craft - they just wanna be famous.

Actress tome just sounds funny. I'd rather be called an actor.

I call myself an actor just because I've never seen the need for the word actress. It's not that I dislike it or find it offensive - someone who performs on stage (or on screen, etc.) is an actor. No matter what gender. *shrugs*

I think that actor is name of real performer, only person I've known who was called actress was my classmate playing in schoolplay and pretending to be more talented than Sarah Brightman...
for me actress is a negative of actor^^

Actor just sounds more bold and empowering. Besides, why do women need to differentiate themselves from men? People try to correct me when I say I'm an actor, and I feel like they're trying to shove me back into place. Gender equality, ladies. Gender equality.

...

I can honestly say this has never crossed my mind.

Now that I think about it, parents of other children who've seen my shows, or certain teachers call me an "actress", but my parents, teachers I respect, and my peers call me an "actor".

Veeery interesting...

I prefer actor simply because I hate going "actor/actress" just as much as I hate going "he/she". It's just a huge hassle. Besides, most people make "actor" sound like someone who has toned their skill, while "actress" sounds like a diva to people. I prefer actor.

well this i svery interesting i never thought so many people would have this similuar veiw...from a directors POV i always call everyone an actor i find the term Actress not offensive but disrespectful and annoying
PostPosted: Fri Aug 12, 2005 2:34 pm

I find it annoying when people say, "No, I'm an ACTRESS because I'm a girl." I find insisting upon using terms like waitress, actress, etc. stupid. It's as if we always have to be politically correct; we cannot say he, we have to say he or she, even when the she is implied. No saying mankind, it's HUMANkind. It's idiotic. I say actor because that is the term. 'Nuff said.

The only serious performer I ever met who called herself an actress was a total primadonna, and as sure as we all were that she would fulfill her dream one day since she was so determined, she gave up acting when she didn't get the lead in Phantom of the Opera.

Random Fact Time:

Did you know that there were a lot more "-ess" words? Such as doctress for women doctors, poetess for women poets, etc...
