It was a warm day, but the underwater world still remained cool, as it always did, despite the sun’s rays beating down on its surface. Pakpao yawned as she exited her cavern dwelling, content and happy with her life thus far. She had never had this kind of happiness since, well, when she had been with Calantha all those years ago. But now she seemed satisfied with life, and it was such a good feeling to have.

Stretching her legs, the kelpi mare shook her head, her headfins bobbing and swaying with the water current. It was a beautiful morning, and she wasn’t going to waste any time today. Kuval had shown her the beauty and wonder of the surface world, and she wanted to go explore it some more.

Turning around, she contemplated finding him and dragging him alongside with her. It was kind of nerve-wracking, exploring the unknown by herself, but with a second thought, decided she’d rather not bother him.

Giving a low snort, her indigo hooves began their trek up the sandbar leading up to the surface.

Letting out a loud grunt, the sleepy-eyed mutant ruffled her long feathers and trudged her way towards the ocean. The morning had just begun, but already the blasted sun had made everything so hot, and Torment was miserably sweltering with her dark coat. She hated the feel of being drenched in her own sweat, and it would make her feel plenty better to wash herself off in the open water. And who knew… perhaps she might even get lucky and catch a fish for breakfast while she was at it?

Long maroon hair clung to her back as she traveled on, and she angrily shook her mane in hope of detaching the sticky hair from her skin. How her Father could remain so rank and foul was beyond her… the young mare certainly preferred keeping good hygiene. She probably took that after her mother, the b***h.

Scowling, her mind was only distracted from the pink and white atrocity in her mind as her hot pink hooves began to sink in to the warm sand beneath her feet.

Reaching the surface, Pakpao recalled from her last visit the brightness of the sun and land above, so she remembered to keep her eyes tightly shut as she walked above and out of the water, allowing them to adjust themselves to the water-free environment. The sand beneath her was no longer remaining on the ground, but instead clung to her feet yet again. It was annoying, but tolerable.

Opening her indigo eyes, the Kelpi glanced about in wonder if anything in the environment had changed since she had last surfaced with Kuval. The long kelp plants – no- they were trees, as Kuval put it, were still high up into the blue waterless sky. The morning was much warmer than the evening she and her companion had last surfaced up in, and she could feel its warm rays quickly drying out her scaled body.

As she gazed around, her sight quickly fell upon something she had not seen on her last visit… a dark purple-hued land dweller who was making her way onto the sand.

She froze, not knowing what to do. Should she run back into her waters? Attempt to scare off this creature as she had so many others in the past? Or just ignore their presence, in hopes that it would go away?

Her annoyance with the burning sand and heat almost caused her to miss the bright colored… thing that was standing only yards away. But her eyesight had not betrayed her and it was not a mirage she thought to believe she had been seeing at first… no. There really HAD been a fish-like creature rising from the ocean water, making its way onto the sand. What in the hell was it?!

She paused in her walk, sizing up the water creature. It had fins like a fish, but no doubt had more than just gills if it was able to breathe and live above the surface. Her colors were annoyingly bright and rainbow-ish, but seemingly harmless enough. No horn or talons seemed to adorn the creature’s body, which suggested to Torment that it was not of the predator category of species, like she herself was. Though, unable to look inside her mouth, there was the possibility of a dozen or so fangs just waiting to tear into meat. Her body as well appeared scaled instead of natural horse hide, which reminded the mare of the tale of dragons she had heard of once before. A long finned tail came up from its backend, but other than her fish-like appearance, the creature familiarly resembled that of a horse. Could it be a type of horse?

Torment took another step closer, as her gaze met with that of the fish-creature’s. She was not about to back away, despite her wariness of the situation. She would be cautious, but discover what she needed to know before she acted upon her instincts on what to do with this creature.

Her eyes widened as the creature took another step towards her. Would she be friendly, or ferocious? The long white and pink tipped fins on her side told her that the land dweller was not so intimidating, but the trio of horns adorning her head was intimidating enough. Though appearances shouldn’t be deceiving…after all, didn’t a good many Kelpi have horns on their head? But then again, they never had three.

From the looks of things, it appeared this was another female in her midst, which didn’t necessarily mean trouble in Pakpao’s mind. As vicious as many females could get, perhaps there would be a feminine connection between the two of them?

“… Good day, land dweller.” She finally forced out, uneasy with the silence between them as the other continued her approach. Feeling bold herself, the Kelpi took a few steps herself to meet the mare halfway.

Her language was recognizable enough, which told Torment that she was of the horse variety, but what kind of horse exactly was she, if she was able to breathe and survive under the water?

“There’s nothing good about this day, fish.” She responded back testily, finally recalling her own body odor that had been forming due to her sweat and the sun’s heat.

Coming within a few yards of each other, Torment stopped yet again to get a closer look at the other being. Her scales seemed hard, potentially impenetrable by means of fangs, but then again, possibly not. There was a long scar running down one of the creature’s eyes, which silently whispered that this mare had definitely been in combat before. And, judging by the fact she was standing directly in front of her, it was a combat that she had survived with little physical regrets, aside from the facial scarring. Perhaps there was more to her than met the eye?

“What… are you, exactly?” Torment finally asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. Unlike many of her family members, she preferred knowledge nearly as much as she preferred bloodshed. Because knowledge, in the end, improved and strengthened those willing to learn from it. And if she could figure out what exactly this creature was, perhaps she could then figure out what to do with it, whether it be ignore it’s existence, make a meal out of her, or use her benefits to Torment’s advantage.

Her ears flattened at the tone of the mare’s voice. It didn’t sound friendly at all, and now Pakpao had to question whether or not there was vicious intent directed towards her or not. Would this creature attempt to attack her? What’s more, would Pakpao be able to defend herself should the creature attack?

Not only did she appear to be a moody mare, but a dangerous one as well. The horns were enough to keep Pakpao at a distance from her. Her ears perked, however, when the curious question was asked, making Pakpao feel a bit more comfortable with the situation at hand. The mare didn’t know what she was… and therefore didn’t know what to think about her. Perhaps that was all that was troubling the dark colored mare?

“I am a Kelpi,” Pakpao said hesitantly, wondering if she should lie about her breed. If this creature was trying to feel her out for more information, and could potentially use it against her, should she watch what she said? “I am an ocean dweller, such as you are a land dweller. I swim, as you walk, and I breathe both under and above the water, though I take it that you can only breathe the air above the ocean?”

There, that was brief, but somewhat informative. She didn’t necessarily have to tell the mare just yet if she was a herbivore or not, or any other vital information about her breeding.

"Don't be stupid, like I haven't already figured that much out on my own!" Torment growled, growing frustrated. This mare seemed to intentially be watching what she said to her. Could it be that she was already scared of Torment?

Well good, then, Torment thought to herself, preening proudly. She SHOULD be afraid.

Her eyes continued their gaze over her, and she snorted. "So.. a Kelpi, huh? Are there many more of your kind? How is it that I've never seen one of your breed before?"

So many questions, not enough answers. Agitated, her wings ruffled against her side, attempting to pick off the still sweaty hair from her back. If she didn't get into the ocean soon, she'd be more grouchy than ever. But then again... she didn't really have the urge to submerge herself into water when there very well could be dozens of these... things, lurking and walking about in it!

She flinched at the comment, growing more and more leery over this demanding creature. One hoof found itself taking a step backwards, closer to the ocean. If the tension between the two didn't leave soon, she'd prefer to be close to her best escape route as possible.

"Well, what are you supposed to be?!" she snapped back, falling into her former fiesty attitude. If this mare wanted to snap and demand, then two could play at that game! "I'm sure there are just as many Kelpi under the water as there are of your kind roaming across this waterless land. And you've probably never seen one of my kind before because you're too busy being a b***h to everyone else!"

Okay, so maybe she had gone a little too far with the b***h comment, but Pakpao felt infinitely better after getting it off of her chest. No one, fins or no fins, was going to order and question her around like some guppy!
