Rearing up on his hind legs like he had seen his father do before, the young foal let out a whinny as he made his way alongside the river, glancing down at his reflection every so often. He was a handsome colt, and he took great pleasure in that fact, despite the warning his father had given him about being overly arrogant.

"There's nothing wrong in taking pride in one's appearance," he argued to himself in his mind. "In fact... I should be so lucky to be blessed with such looks!"

Grinning to himself, he threw back his short hair and leaned over into the river to get a better look at himself, as well as quench his thirst.

She walked through the woods, heart filled with intent, purpose. It was as if destiny itself had given her the task of weaving through the trees towards the river, but she herself had no particular goal in mind upon reaching her destination. But the river itself, brimming with life and freshness, would provide enough satisfaction.

She was free, free from an unknown encasement that made many of her days blind and restricted. And she now felt as if she had been reborn into a wonderful being that she couldn't help but focus on the river's glossy surface ahead, ignoring any other creatures that may have been near. With each step she took, the closer to got to the water, and the sooner she would see her own reflection...

The river mirrored the filly's pale but striking white coat and dark indigo eyes. She stared at the reflection intently, and a shadow of a smile flashed over her features.

But then--a sudden interruption came in the form of the water rippling her reflection away. She paused and looked around. What dared erase her mirror?

The white foal glanced to her side and spotted an indistinct black form, somewhat close to her proximity. She huffed and stomped one hoof to the ground, though it didn't do much considering her small and frail body. Dare she attempt to interact with it..? The idea lingered in her mind and she appeared, for the moment, lost in thought.

It was soft, but Dorian's small black ears picked up the gentle stomp against the ground and his head rose from his drinking to glance around. There, standing only feet away from him, was this ghastly ghost-looking filly with a frown upon her face. But that wasn't right... ghosts didn't come out during daylight hours, did they?

No matter what she was, he had let his guard down and she had managed to come within yards of him without him realizing it. Father would be quite irritated with him if he found out about it. His teal wings ruffled at the thought...making Father angry was definitely not something he wanted to do.

A silver hoof pawed at the ground as he straightened himself out, attempting to stand tall and proud like he had seen his warrior Father do before. Perhaps, if this truly was a spirit, he could scare her off by not being afraid. He wasn't afraid of ghosts. At least, he didn't think he was, now that he's seen what one looked like. He wasn't afraid of nothin'!

"W-Who are you?!" he barked out, attempting to keep a brave face as teal eyes examined the filly up and down. She was certainly pale enough to be a ghost, but she looked pretty solid at the same time. Could she simply be a foal, just like him?

Stepping slowly towards the cause of her disturbance, the white filly inspected the figure before her while keeping her distance, as if it would contaminate her if she got any closer. It was a pity that the figure--now recognized as a male--seemed to try hard to make himself impressive. Such a display was hardly worth her attention.

The stuttering at the start of the other's words did not go unnoticed, which fortunately gave the filly sympathy for the stranger, which was enough to permit her response. "Who am I?" she breathed out derisively, "Who are you to ask?"

She eyed the other, which may as well have turned into a quiet glare, and her gaze drifted to the sharp thing protruding from his head. It was similar to the protrusion that appeared out of her own head, but aside from that, he was obviously of a different mind and race than her--in a word, impure. But... how did he acquire the horn, which allowed for so many miracles?

"...My name is Amalthea," she finally decided to answer, gaze flickering from his horn to the other protrusions of teal that came from his sides. Perhaps those mysteries would be solved later, if fate permitted. "Afraid of something?"

Dorian snorted, not liking the tone in the pale filly's voice at all. Taking a bold step forward, teal eyes examined her suspiciously, almost as if they were waiting on her to disappear right in front of him.

"So you're not a ghost?" he asked, more out of reassurance to him himself than an actual question. It seemed more probable now, that she wasn't some horrible ghoulish being. Why, she was far too thick to see through, and her voice sounded like any 'ol regular foal's voice, maybe a bit softer.

He watched her study him and he gave a smug grin as he lifted his dark chin up high in the air. Why, he'd be jealous of himself if he were some dull white filly too!

"I'm Dorian," he replied back, wondering if he should even attempt to pronounce her name, "You're a unicorn too, aren'tcha?"

He studied her lavender horn, which was a beautiful horn indeed, though, he would never admit it out loud. "My Father's a unicorn, that's how I got my horn. Mother's a wind, though, so that's why I have my wings!"

For emphasis, he lifted up one of his teal color wings to show off. He enjoyed showing off to others, nearly as much as he enjoyed preening in front of his own reflection. No doubt this filly would agree on how handsome he was!

Like the colt, Amalthea found his words quite unpleasing and offensive. How rude! she thought, glaring back at him. Inspecting me as if I were... some sort of lifeless creature to gawk at! She stepped backwards automatically to keep her safe space from him as soon as he got closer. She was already on the verge of telling the colt off for his disrespect until his question--

"A ghost?" she cried out disdainfully. "You take me for a ghost, above all other things?!" she paused, staring at him with immediate frustration, "I suppose it could be worse, but a ghost!"

She huffed and turned her back on him, staring back at the water by her side. Did she really seem like one from afar? But she was alive! Ghosts can't look alive. She most surely did not look grossly undead at all--she turned back to the colt to find a rather unsettling expression on his face, which was several inches higher on his neck than it was before. Though the situation was a bit unpleasant for her, Amalthea could not help but feel very slight humor in his posture.

"Dorian," she repeated, finding his last question both baffling and disagreeable, "Unicorn too?"

She eyed him as an alien, and began her response: "I may be a unicorn, and you may share a quality or two of mine, but you are definitely not one of my kind." She felt it rather revolting that a creature like Dorian considered himself to be a unicorn like her--what could have possibly forced him to conceive such a thought?

"So... only part of you is unicorn," Amalthea admitted sadly. She hesitated and watched Dorian attempt to glorify his teal and feathered attachments. "You cannot call yourself one, then. You are merely a common horse with traits of my kind. You cannot exist in the same realm as me..." she continued matter-of-factly. It was odd to her that this stranger was seemingly showing off to her--what was there to show off? His silver horn and cloven hooves were, perhaps, the only traits that Amalthea would ever consider to admire. She had half a mind to turn away to wander elsewhere from the colt, but... perhaps such a confused creature should have company to keep him from getting into trouble over his own vaingloriousness... "Where are your parents?"

He had sense enough to blush as she questioned his logic. True, the longer he stared at her, the more obvious of just how alive she was, especially when she was getting flustered.

"Well, you're paler than anything else I've ever seen," he responded, getting defensive. "And you just kind of came out of nowhere too! What else should I have expected you to be?"

His nose scrunched up in frustration as she turned away from him. This filly was beyond rude... she definitely reminded him of Res in more ways than one. "I am so a unicorn!" he argued, stomping up to where she had stepped away to. "In fact, I'm BETTER than a unicorn! I'm a unicorn and a wind... you're just… you're just jealous, that's all!"

He snorted, his teal eyes continuing their glare. His short tail twitched as his angry glance moved and began to bore down on the ground between his hooves. How could she not consider him a unicorn too? He had the horn, after all, just like she did... so why did she manage to make him feel so inferior about it?

"My parents live off over there, near the forest." He grumbled, motioning his head slightly to point to the distance beyond where they stood. Dorian didn't know what to do about this situation... he'd never encountered another foal like her before, especially one who didn't seem to care about his good looks like everyone else did. "What about you? Where are yours?"

A soft sigh escaped Amalthea as she shook her head in disapproval. Obviously, the colt was unable to be helped. He just didn't understand true purity.

And when she took in Dorian's response, she couldn't decide whether to laugh or be thoroughly agitated. Insisting that he was a unicorn, eh? How delusional.

But she couldn't help contain her loud chortle when he stated that he was better than a unicorn. What on earth could possibly be superior to her race? She would not respond to such an insult, she was far too above and beyond him for that.

"I don't need anything to take care of me," Amalthea firmly stated. The truth was, she never really had a parental bond that Dorian must have, and she wandered alone for a majority of her life. She preferred not to think about having parents as she was well enough on her own. "Such a shame that you do, though," she mocked, "Since your parents live so close, I guess you can't wander far away without them. Didn't your so-called 'unicorn' father ever teach you how to survive independently?"

She paused before continuing further, "...Or perhaps he gave up, having noticed that you are not pure unicorn."

He balked. Father not love him? Of course Father loved him... didn't he?

"It sounds like you're insultin' my Mother when you talk like that, Amalthea." he snorted, holding back tears. He'd never been spoken to so harshly before, not even by his own parents! "You shouldn't insult others' Mothers and Fathers, just because you don't have a Mother and Father of your own."

He glanced down and kicked away a rock lying in his pathway. Dorian didn't know what she meant by 'pure', but he felt like a unicorn. What was so bad with having wings as well? Perhaps his father was truly disappointed in him, like the white filly had suggested. That he just 'gave up' on Dorian, and that was why he was with Si all the time. It made sense, the more he thought about it.

"Well," he finally breathed out, imitating the sigh he had heard her make only moments earlier, "There isn't anything I can do about it, now, is there?"

Lifting his head back up from watching the motionless rock, his eyes blinked away the tears and moved back to watch the female. "So I guess I'm going to be the one to look after myself. If some silly girl like you can manage to do it on her own, I don't see why I can't."

Amalthea tilted her head; she had surely not meant offense to his mother--she did not even mention the non-unicorn parent at all. She gazed into Dorian's eyes and for a fleeting moment, felt sorry--pity, even, but the feeling vanished as soon as it came, and she spoke once more:

"They have gone for now, surely, as I can wander alone sufficiently, as I have said before."

She looked to the ground where Dorian had kicked the small rock. Poor boy, confused about himself and the world around him. And Amalthea had neither power or will to help him. "You will do well to stay close with your mother, and forge a path of your own when the time comes, but no magic will turn you into a real unicorn." She looked at him with what seemed to be sad eyes, though they were simply just languid in reflection to emotion.

And no, Amalthea was just not some silly girl; in a way, she was grown, and she was already more infinitely mature than the colt standing in front of her, whom evidently was not even sure of his family's allegiance.

So, without feeling the need to utter another word, Amalthea wandered over to the trunk of a tree with particularly soft grass and laid herself down. She was grateful to have the water be so close, as she could immediately switch her vision from Dorian to herself. She gave no mind to him for now, unless he desired something else from her.

He watched her as she walked away, ignoring him to lay underneath the cool shade of the tree. Had he had any spirit of argument left within him, perhaps he would have trailed her to continue the conversation.

However, his thoughts now focused on himself, and what he was. She was a proud filly, but he was a proud colt. He would prove his worth, and his purity. Just because he failed to have the same amount of unicorn blood running through his veins as she had, he refused to see it as making him any lesser than she. Both his mother and his father would be proud of him, of who he was. He was Dorian, and nothing would change that.

"You'll see, Amalthea," he muttered, turning his smaller body away from her direction as he began his walk away from the pale filly, "I'll show you one day that I'm better than you think I am... I'll show everybody."
