Ohhh now this is what I love! I have a small business that involves designing and making costumes for the local theater. It's great fun! I just finished up making a bunch of Renaissance and Celtic costumes. biggrin

For making bellydance costumes, I adore this site:

http://www.shira.net/costuming.htm

There are lots of really cool things you can do with t-shirts to make cholis too! For example:

Take a tight v neck t-shirt and cut it to be the length you want it to be.
In the back cut a couple of horizontal strips- these will become your ties.
Then vertically cut those strips so that they can be tied.
Embellish your top with your favorite gems, coins, etc.

You can even find things at Walmart that make good costume makings. Check those clearance swim suits- wink The swim wear wrap scarf things make excellent hip scarves. You can use them how they are, or add some coins or tassels.

A petal skirt is really fun and super easy to make! Just get some pretty fabric... make sure it's flowy... and cut a hole in the middle for your hips and add elastic. biggrin

I love making costumes... biggrin

you can customize a store-bought bra (with coins, sequins, beads, etc.) and make it look like a $200 professionally made bra, while only spending around $30 all together (including the decorations). i've seen many a professional dancer (as well as newbie dancers) in hand-decorated store bought bras. some were so well made that you can hardly tell they were originally plain old bras.

pants can be made really easily. just cut out two matching pant shapes from some fabric, leaving extra at the top for the waistband, and sew them together. (if you want harem pants, leave extra at the bottom for elastic, plus extra room for them to billow; if you want melodia look-alike pants, cut extra room at the bottom for the bell shape, and leave a large slit unsewn.) embelish with fringe, side ties, a sash thing, beads, whatever you want.

ebay baby biggrin You can piece together some really amazing costumes with kuchi coins and pendants that you bought on that site for less than half the original price! That's where I get almost ALL the pieces for my costuming. www.flyingskirts.com has a really good bra base for a coin bra.

(repeat from previous thread)

okay, since i've been sick and in bed form the lovely holiday stresses, i got to work on my tribal bra. here's what i learned:

be prepared to hurt your fingers! hand stitching onto the padded/molded bra can cramp your fingers. pace yourself! it took me 3 days.

acquire the Folkwear pattern Tribal Dancer. it was designed by Caroleena Nerrichio so it's true to ATS. also the book by Dawn Devine Brown Bedlah, Baubles, and Beads. both were very helpful in covering the bra. also make your choli ahead of time or do as the gals in Domba! do: wear another thinner bra underneath. after it's done you're not going to wash it!

I bought my coins from shimmybliss.com and my kuchis from a vendor at Spirit of the Tribes in Ft. Lauderdale (held every april) both at very good prices. My mirror belt i got direct from india from some very good seller on ebay.

when i come up with other things, i'll post some more! feel free to ask any questions. i've been engineering/costuming for over 20 years.

ooohh flying skirts! i love that site. but sadly, i know that most of the skirts will be 3-6 inches too short, so i had to make my own.

If you get the Tribal Dancer Pattern from Folkwear: go ahead and buy 10 yards of 45" wide fabric (and make sure it's 45". I got cheated and they sold me 40" confused question ) that way you will have enough for the choli too. and you won't have to fudge the 10 yard bottom tier like they suggest. just cut/tear the skirt pieces, then cut the choli from the leftovers. i couldn't resist doing my skirt in true tribal indigo-ish blue instead of the classic black! whee

Sewing Tip #1:

Do not use cheap thread for hand or machine sewing! I highly recommend Guterman threads sold mostly in quilting stores. While you're in the quilting store check out their fabrics. I've gotten some great 2 sided brocade that has a perfect pattern for my Turkish enteri for a great price. But anyway, back to the threads: you don't get that annoying tangle that the other threads give you and Guterman is strong enough for hand sewing the heavier fabrics. On the other hand, the cheap buttonhole thread is just fine for attaching coins. go figure. confused

For my serger, I only use Maxi-Lock.
