Prologue
“Link, I….” Midna Began to speak, but she could not say what she wished to say, she wanted to say so many things, but she had no time. She had to destroy the Twilight Mirror, only she could do it, and if she didn’t, what would stop some Evil force from using the Mirror once again?
“… Good Bye, Link…” Midna said, with a great deal of sadness in her voice. She shed a tear and wiped it away. She slowly approached the Mirror, and Entered into the twilight, a single tear was enough to shatter the Mirror, so that it could never be used… by anyone ever again.
I love you Link, I had to do this, but it was the last thing I would have wanted to do, I’ll never forget you, but you need to forget me.
6 Months Later…
A traveling Alchemist was lost in the Desert of a Land most unusual to him, and he had a hard time even surviving there, with Burning Sunlight and Deadly creatures, he only had a short Bronze Sword and limited water, but after escaping death more times than one ought to, he stumbled upon what appeared to be an Ancient temple, he rushed inside at the thought of Shade, and Possibly even water, there was some shade, but no water in sight.
“This place is amazing! Although, I’ll have to explore later, I need rest if I wish to keep my strength up.” He said, and he pulled a vial of Red liquid that a cleric had given him back in his home town, it was supposed to have healing properties, “We’ll see about that” he said to no one at all.
He took a sip and dozed off in the shade.
He awoke several hours later, “Wow, I haven’t felt this good in months!!! That stuff must have worked!”
He looked around, it was a beautiful sunset, but he had no time to enjoy the scenery, only to explore it!
As he walked around in the cool evening Air, something felt as if it was calling him, and he seemed to be entranced by the silent voices, he simply let his feet lead him to the object that drew him like a moth to a flame.
Even in the dim twilight, thousands of shards seemed to glow with a dark sort of aura, he Reached down to examine a piece, but it cut him, and at that moment it was like he was possessed by a foreign phenomenon, and he began to pour all of his power into Attempting to restore the shards, unable to resist, he worked and worked for days without rest, food, or water, until he had restored the Mirror, and he collapsed, his fingers bleeding and his energy depleted.
… And he never rose to see his work…
Chapter I:
Seven years apart….
Two Children sat at the grassy shore of a crystal clear lake, both chatting at each other, they appeared to be the same age, that’s because they were, they were both six years old, both had dirty blonde hair, and they wore similar faded jade tunics, they were twins. The Boy’s Name was Ryou (r-ee-yOO), and the Girl’s was Morgan, they had begged their father all week to be allowed to play at the lake after dark, because they heard that on certain nights, when the skies were crystal-clear and bright from the moon and stars, that fairies might come out to play, the children had always wanted to see a fairy, because they had heard of them from the stories their father always told them about his past, of course, sometimes his stories seemed to be too exciting to be reality, but when one didn’t believe, the other would.
Ryou sat kicking his feet on top of a boulder and asked, “Hey, Morgan! When do you thin the fairies will come? I heard that a fairy’s blessing can even save you from death, is that even possible?”
“Of course it isn’t! Ryou, why do you have to be so gullible? Father tells us bedtime stories, not actual accounts of his, so called ‘adventures’, I mean, come on! Yetis, Princesses, Zora princes, ‘twilight’, and fantastic beasts that he took down by himself?
NOT TO MENTION the fact that he told us that he got turned into an animal! Our father was a traveler, nothing more.” Morgan believed that she was the intellectual sibling, even though she was always the one who begged for the stories, but she’d never admit to that.
During Morgan’s lecturing, Ryou scanned the lake’s surface for anything that seemed “magical” and he swore he saw floating orbs of light above the surface, “Whoa!!! Morgan, do you see that? Over there! Look! Look!”
“Huh? WHERE?!” Morgan nearly yelled in surprise, “I see them! They’re so pretty! Wow! I can’t believe we’re actually seeing this” she reached up and Pinched Ryou’s arm.
“OW! What was that for? That hurt!”
“Oh, so it isn’t a dream, I was just checking”
“wait… where are they going?” Ryou asked as he saw the ‘fairies’ scatter and flee.
“Morgan?”
“…Yeah, Ryou?”
“Are you scared? Why is it so dark? I don’t see the moon?”
“I can’t either…”
Suddenly, an unusual pattern of lights etched themselves into the darkness, right in front of the twins, who had inched themselves towards each other out of fear. Suddenly, a figure was thrown from the pattern, Morgan screamed, and Ryou grabbed her and started running, the lights of the night had returned, but a chilling silence was present, they ran towards their house, and the first thing they both said was:
“DAAAAADDY!!!!”
Chapter II:
A Hero, a Princess, and A True Story
Shortly Before….
Midna, the beautiful Queen of the Realm of Twilight was sitting at her throne, zoning out the commotion of the others in her Palace.
Oh, Link… She thought, I wish I could see you again… But what am I thinking? This is where I belong; Here, in this forsaken twilight. And you, there, in Hyrule, that beautiful land, I so wish I could Return, but I made sure that even I could never use the Mirror, was it a mistake? “NO! I NEEDED TO DO IT!!!” she shouted, her thoughts becoming words, and she began crying, and screamed “I WANT TO GO BACK!!!”
After a while, her guards rushed into the Throne room, to see their Queen bent forward, crying her eyes out, they ran to her.
One guard worriedly asked, “Milady! Are you hurt? What is the matter?!”
The Second guard seemed even more distressed than the first, but knowing all too well what was the matter, He was silent, and signaled the other to leave, as he did.
And in the most unlikely of circumstances, the portal that had forced her out when an Evil dictator overthrew her and imprisoned her in the body of an Imp, that she, herself had destroyed, had opened up, and flooded the entire Palace with a light more pure than any of them had ever seen, even when Midna was in the land of Hyrule, it seemed as if she was thrown through the light, and into an ominous darkness, seeing a familiar figure, confusedly, she asked, “… L-Link…?”
Midna heard a scream, and realized that it wasn’t whom she thought it was, the two fled from her, and she passed out, seeming to melt into a shadow on the ground. Link…
Present…
The father of the two children was sound asleep, but upon hearing his Children Scream, He leapt out of bed and rushed to the Entrance of his house.
The two children, upon seeing their father, ran to him, Morgan was crying into her father’s leg, and Ryou was shaking in fear.
The father, looked exactly the same as his son, and his Daughter had Green eyes, not blue, and freckles.
Shocked, worried, and enraged at seeing his Children’s reaction to what ever had happened, he tried to keep his voice soft and comforting, but sounded somewhat demanding when he asked “Kids, Kids! Shhhh shhhh sshhhhhh… Calm down, calm down…” He waited until they seemed to have calmed down enough to speak, he asked, “Now, please tell me! Tell me exactly what happened, what was it that scared you so badly?”
The two started speaking, but a sentence that one started, the other knew and finished,
Ryou started, and said, “Well, we were at the lake, and I was sitting on the big rock…!”
Morgan continued, “And we were talking about the fairies, and we saw them, but…”
“They all started to run away, and scatter in a bunch of directions…”
“And then… And then the moon got all dark, and we couldn’t see the stars…”
“And I moved towards Morgan…”
“And I moved towards Ryou…”
“And then, these weird lines of light started drawing in the darkness!”
“And then something flew out of the lines and scared us!”
“And she screamed!”
“And he grabbed me and”
“We started running!”
“But it was really quiet!”
And they both said at the same time, “Daddy! What was it?!” And they both started crying again.
The father knew exactly what had happened to the children, but he thought that it shouldn’t have even been possible, It can’t be… I swear she… How? He thought. He walked over to the fireplace, above the mantle a Sword and shield were mounted; he took them down, and said, without even turning to look at them, he told his kids to “Get ready…”
Ryou and Morgan Rushed to their room and came back out holding items that could be used as a weapon, but were actually toys to the children.
Ryou was holding his favorite toy, a wooden sword his father had carved himself, and nailed bronze plates to each side of the blade, and wrapped the hilt with leather, giving it the appearance of an actual sword.
Morgan was holding her favorite toy, a slingshot her father had bought for her at her last birthday, in her other hand she held a pouch filled with coins that had no real value, but they made good ammunition for her slingshot.
Their father was the only one with real weapons; He had a polished super-sharp steel blade, a Shield bearing the Hylian Royal family’s coat of arms, a single bomb, and a Bow with a quiver that was half-filled with hand crafted Arrows.
Their father finally turned to his children once they had returned from their room, and he quietly requested that his children lead him to exactly where the event that had just occurred had taken place. They left their home and gave their father directions while trailing behind him, not because they couldn’t keep up, but because they were still scared.
The sky was clear, but the stars and even the full moon provided much less light to them than it had before. They reached the lake, and Morgan pointed to the boulder that Ryou had been sitting on, and said, “right there, that’s it…”
The father had brought a lantern along to illuminate their path, so he held it out in front of him as he slowly approached the spot that his daughter had indicated. As he drew closer and closer, the father felt like he was being watched, even though not a thing was in sight, he swore he heard a familiar voice, even though it was as silent as a grave on a rainy Sunday.
When he thought he saw a dark form on the ground, the second he stepped toward it, he collapsed to his knees, hundreds of memories flooded back to him, ones he tried to forget, then suddenly, they stopped. There seemed to be a fog surrounding him, which wasn’t unusual, considering it was cool and humid all day for the last week, in the eerie silence, one word, barely audible, whispered to him, in a begging tone, all it said was, “…Link…”
The shadowy form he thought he saw was no longer there, his legs felt heavy, and felt drowsy, the silence was broken by the sounds of crickets, frogs, owls, and the sound of his Children running to him, screaming, “DAD! FATHER! Are you all right???”
Regaining his grip on reality, he got up, tussled his Son’s hair, and wiped a tear from his daughter’s cheek, saying, “Don’t worry, I’m fine, I just had a sudden headache, nothing severe,” he looked back at the site where he had seen the figure, then turned to face his children again, and Reassuringly told them, “Whatever may have been here, I guess your dad scared it away, don’t worry, you kids are safe…” He held out his lantern in front of himself, saying, “Come on, let’s go home, your dad’s kinda tired, and you two need some sleep, so, come on, I’ll race you! I’ll even give you two a head start!”
The twins smiled and ran ahead seeing that all was well, and their father soon followed, and passed them up. They arrived at the house, and all three of them were exhausted, which was what the father had intended, he lead the two to their room, said goodnight to them, and he stored all of his weapons, minus a knife that he had strapped to his ankle, inside his left boot.
Several hours had passed, and the father woke up unusually early, but he noticed he wasn’t alone, a dark figure, with orange hair was asleep with him, resting its head on his chest.
The father slowly and cautiously inched his knee up so he could reach his blade, when the figure said something that stopped him out of shock, it may have been mumbling, but it said, “…Link, I’m so sorry…”
A sudden realization filled Link with excitement, she was different but it was definitely her, Link asked softly, “…Mi-Midna???” He threw back the covers with the hand that he was reaching for his knife with, and, he had no Shadow, and she seemed to melt into a shadow at her left foot, where a fine line connected her to him.
Midna woke up just from hearing Link’s Voice, and when she looked up, andsaw his face, even shrouded by the darkness of the room, she cried, and threw her arms around him, and whispered between sobs, “Link… oh, Link… I have returned!”
Chapter III:
How could this be?
Link was shocked to see Midna, though, he was expecting to see something unusual after he heard what his children said to him, but he wasn’t expecting this!
He Really had no Idea what was going on, except for the fact that he woke up and saw someone he hadn’t seen in nearly a Decade, was in his bed.
“Ummm… Midna?”
“Yeah, Link?”
“Do you have any Idea how you got here? Because, according to my kids, you flew out of a Twilight Portal and crashed in front of them… I was wondering if you could fill me in on some details, because all of this is a little foggy to me…”
Midna thought back to the previous night, trying to remember what had happened to her…
“Well… I was in my throne room, and I was crying… then there was this extremely bright light, it was like it grabbed me and pulled me in, and when I came out on the other side… It was really dark… WAIT! You have kids?” she was shocked at the realization of what he had said
“Link! How long have I been gone? It seems like maybe half a year, but you said you have children, not just a child?” Midna was starting to freak out; she had absolutely what was going on, like it was a bad dream. As she kept speaking, she was losing control over the volume of her voice.
“Midna! SHHHH! My children are asleep! Okay, it’s been seven years since you left, I have two children, and they’re twins, ones a boy, the other a girl, their names are Ryou and Morgan, and if you don’t calm down, you’re going to meet them a lot sooner than either of us would like!” Link explained all of the questions, trying to calm her down.
“Seven years? I can’t believe I’ve been gone for seven years…” Midna said, with a sudden realization, though, she was quiet, Link could tell she was sad.
“Midna, I have another question… Why do you look different than I remember?” Link asked, now that Midna was calm.
“I don’t know, Link, why? What do I look like?”
“Well, you don’t quite look like the Queen of Twilight, you look more like…” He paused for some reason.
“Look more like..? I look more like what? What do I look like?” She asked, sounding worried.
“More like a Hylian… Midna, you’re beautiful.” Link said, finishing his thought.
Midna Blushed at Link’s compliment, though, his answer was evasive, she looked around the room, trying to find a mirror, she saw many things in the room, A few Shields baring different coats of arms, symbols, and carvings. She saw a sword mounted on a wall, papers scattered on a table, a dresser, and many other normal things, over in a corner, she saw a tall mirror mounted on the wall, she got up, and floated over two it, but what saw wasn’t what Link told her, she was shocked, and fell silent.
“Link, you liar!” she yelled, at him and spun around, “I barely look like I have a form!”
Link got up out of the bed and walked over to Midna, but strangely, as he got closer, her form returned, “Midna…” He began, curious about his discovery, “I wasn’t lying, now look…” he stood right behind her when she turned around.
Midna was also shocked at what she saw, “How is this even possible?” then her flushed, and she continued, “More importantly, why am I naked!”
“Midna! Stop shouting! The kids will---“ he began, but it was too late.
Link’s Daughter, Morgan, walked into Link’s Room, she was rubbing her eyes, And mumbled, “Daddy, I heard a noise, what’s going on?” She looked up to see her father, but also saw a woman she had never even met standing behind him, almost like she was trying to hide from her.
“Daddy…” she said in shock, and she ran out of the room, crying.
Midna was surprised at what she just saw, and indeed, she was trying to hide, “Well that wasn’t exactly the best first… second impression I could have made”
“Uh, yeah… Listen, she’s going to say something to Ryou, so, I think we need to explain to them what’s going on…”
“Great Idea, but there’s a problem…”
“What? What’s the problem?”
Midna covered her face and shook her head, “The problem is I’M Naked! Remember?” And she was right, the only things she had on weren’t clothing, but accessories, she was wearing Stone bands with the same designs as the fused shadows had, on her lower arms, her Ankles, and a thin loose one around her neck.
“… Yeah, I think I have some things clean you can wear… but we’ll need to go into town to get you some of your own clothing if you can’t hide in my shadow like you used to…” Link said, just now realizing that since she wasn’t an imp anymore, that it wasn’t normal for her to be technically nude.
Link looked through his clothes, finding some things she could wear, the first thing he pulled out was a cloak, similar to the one she wore, he handed it to her, he also found some pants, and a dark colored shirt. “Should this be good enough for now?” he asked.
“Oh, it’ll do for now…” she said and giggled as she got dressed.
… I don’t think I’ve ever heard her giggle before… he thought, the He and Midna, exited the bedroom, and Link told Midna to stay a few steps behind him, and she did.
Link entered his children’s room and Morgan had stopped crying but she seemed to still be upset, Ryou was kind of half awake sitting up in his bed wondering why Morgan had been crying, Link hadn’t been noticed yet, so he knocked on the open door and he entered, “Morgan, Ryou, I have a story to tell you, someone who’ll help me tell it, and finally give you proof that it’s not a ‘bedtime story’. Get dressed, and come on out, we’ll be waiting” Link said as he exited the room, and closed the door behind him.
Link had lit up the fireplace and it was burning brightly, for some reason Midna was staring into the flames, apparently unaffected by the heat and light, Link was sitting in the chair by the fireplace that he always sat in to tell his children his stories. Now that there was actually light in the room, Link could get a better look at Midna, he noticed that her skin was still grey, and still had the Black markings on it, but she really did look more like a Hylian, instead of a Twilight elf. Her eyes were still big, and they were still red and yellow, but they made her look cute, and she still had that one long sharp fang outside her mouth.
Morgan and Ryou entered the room and of course the first thing they saw was Midna sitting in front of the fireplace, Morgan spoke first asking, “Father, who is that woman?”
Ryou spoke next saying, “Morgan! Dad told us that he had someone to help him tell his story, remember? She must be the person!”
Link hearing them speak asked Midna to face them and he would tell them who she was.
“You’re right Ryou, she is the one who’s going to help me tell my story, and Morgan, Her name is Midna, Midna, these are my two children, Ryou, and Morgan” Link said, introducing everybody.
“My, my Link they look just like you, No wonder I thought that Ryou was you in the dark.”
Ryou sounded sort of scared when he responded, “Wait… That was you?”
But Morgan Was only interested in her father introducing her, and she remembered her name from somewhere, “Midna? That’s an interesting name, I swear I’ve heard it before…”
Midna started, “Well, you should have…”
“Because I’ve told you two many stories about her, Midna the Shadow imp, or Midna, the Twilight Princess? I know you know the stories, because they was your favorite stories I used to tell you, but, time has since changed her, and She’s been freed from her imprisonment in the body of an imp.”
Both Morgan and Ryou spoke at the same time, shouting, “NO WAY!” But Morgan was harder to convince, and she followed up with, “Prove it then”
Link smiled and he asked “Midna, Can you stand up in front of the fireplace?”
Midna was curious and she complied with his request, but the shadow she cast wasn’t her own, it was Link’s silhouette.
“Do you believe me now, Morgan? Or do you want me to show you more?”
Morgan was freaked out at this and she wanted to disprove what she thought she was seeing, “… okay…” She said, focused on the shadow.
“Fine” Link said, and he got up, asked Midna to move, and he then stood in front of the fireplace, in the same spot Midna was standing in, there was no shadow cast.
“All of the stories I’ve told you are true, I did get turned into an animal, a wolf, I do know the princess of Hyrule, I did know a Zora Prince, I did meet Yetis on the top of Hyrule’s Highest peaks, I do know Gorons from death mountain, there is a race of bird people living in a floating city above Hyrule, Ganondorf was a real villain who tried to rule both Twilight and Hyrule.”
“He did save both our worlds, and I did destroy the Twilight mirror, and I am not Hylian.” Midna finished for him.
Ryou was smiling and he turned to Morgan saying, “I TOLD you they weren’t bedtime stories, pay up!”
“How is this even possible? How could this be?” she asked in shock, as she handed Ryou a red Rupee.
