Really, Matt wasn't in the gang Mello was in before, and he wasn't in Mello's past, yet suddenly he was in there playing games, and eventually dies, and Mello says he's a good friend or "Sorry Matt" or something along the lines of that.
but Mello is usually an ill-tempered person, who really doesn't care much, focused on finding Kira, before he died too.
What did you think Matt's relationship with Mello was? Childhood friend that was never mentioned, a really loyal soldier who was willing to die for Mello? Some kinda hot secret yaoi, really, what is their relationship? o:

Actually, I think Matt was third best to succeed L. *shrug* That's what it said on Wikipedia, so I don't know whether or not to believe it. I think they were close friends and not much more, but my inner fangirl does love Mello x Matt fanart.

Whoever posted in wikipedia is right. According to 'How to Read volume 13' Matt was third in line for L. I'm pretty sure they were close friends since Mello seemed to care when he died. But in my opinion they make an awesome yaoi couple.

Matt might have been content with being #3 and just supporting Mello or Near thus didn't need to be shown in the flashback. Obviously they wouldn't have been the only ones present at the Whammy House, and there would have been other possible people to succeed all three of them had Light/Kira managed to take them all out.

It was most likely just a close friendship starting from when they were kids at Wammy's and just carried on into their adult years after Mello got back in touch with Matt (if he ever lost touch, that is, seeing as we're unsure what Matt's been doing the whole time).
However, in my mind I see a "friends with benefits" thing going on along with some deep Boy Love feelings. xd Ah, but that's just me and my DN yaoi addicted mind speaking, though.
